In September of 2019, my family was leaving the annual show. By this point my dad was living in the city with his new girlfriend and I didn’t want to leave him. I was tearing up and my dad said that we would see eachother again soon. That was the last time I saw him in 3-4 years. We said goodbye and I got into my mum’s car and I turned on the small tv in the car and I watched F*CKING HOME. SO NOW THAT MOVIE IS ASSOCIATED WITH A TRAUMATIC EVENT IN MY LIFE

@@estrellaanne1589 It was a long time ago, but it was such a core memory because I remember being really excited and drawing out my own invitations and having a Garfield cake and just waiting for everyone. 🥺 The next year, I was able to get people to visit when I said I was getting a Star Wars cake, but I didn't even get to keep the toy on the top of the cake because I ended up promising the coolest kid in class that he could have it if he would just come to the party, and that's pretty much the last time I had a birthday party and just kept my celebrations with my family at home after that. Since we moved, my best friend also joins in by video call. So at least there's a silver lining to that childhood experience. 🙂

Fun fact: in the book this movie is based on, The True Meaning of Smekday, Oh's earth name is JLo, which is probably why they chose Jennifer Lopez to be part of the film cast. The book is actually a surprisingly good read with plenty of differences to the movie, explanations for some of the boov lore topics the movie leaves out, and lots of cool illustratons. My favorite details are the boov learning English by watching TV and listening to the radio hence their weird names and broken sentence structure, and cats adoring the boov because they smell like fish.

The book was definitely goofy at times. I mean, the big bad was defeated by the cat. A lot of the cat, in fact. The B.O.O.B.S., of which there were two of, one of the groups the name was for, I think it stood for something like "Boys Organized (some synonym for 'against' that starts with O???) Boov(S?)" or something... I could probably just look it up, but it's more fun trying to jog my own memory and work these things out from what I can. Or going to 'totally-not-literally-just-disneyland' in florida. I remember J.Lo finding cleaning supplies as good food. And the fact that O was literally named J.Lo in the first place. There were definitely silly moments, and a generally lighthearted tone, but... It was also taken seriously. The jokes were actually memorable, but, they didn't completely ruin the tone. Okay, now I'm definitely wanting to re-read it. Maybe I should check if my local library has a copy...

Most people don't realize that its based on a book because its not in the trailers and instead its hidden in the end of the credits, and There's a lot of changes between the movie and the book and while the overall story beats are relatively the same. The ending, Locations, People and antics they get into are different Of Similar story beats *Tips mom was still captured * The boov destroyed her car and she meets Oh in an convenience store where he converts it to the flying version *they go together to human land *Tip crying above the ocean and the heart to heart *The boov preparing to leave again after the Gorg show up Of different story beats *They actually go to Florida because its originally the location the Boov gave the humans, but they discover they aren't there because the Boov discovered oranges. * They discover other humans survived relocation in "Happy Mouse Kingdom" in Orlando * They also find the Gorg ships in Florida and attacking a Boov ship *On their way to the actual location, Arizona, they visit Roswell, New Mexico and discover the Gorg are capturing cats, one of the residents betrays tip and pig because they want the Gorg to go away, *You find out they were actually named something else originally from J.Lo (actual name of Oh) and Infighting had only one survive who was named Gorg, which is why the name changed. *Gorg used some technology they created to clone himself repeatedly. *Between Arizona and Roswell It is also discovered the Gorg are incredibly allergic to cats. * Tip mom was taken earlier then everyone else, which is why tip was in hiding, knew of the Boov's existence, and had the car, as she was used to learn how to speak the languages of earth, among others. *how they defeat them, which was they cloned Pig millions of times and teleported them to the Gorg ships, which notably are made of Gorg clones. (not joking their actual skin is the hull), the ships have a visceral reaction and evacuate leaving them all alone. there's a couple of other things of note but those are the biggest changes. although I can see why they might have changed the method of defeat as animating that as well as putting that on the big screen would be kind of disgusting. Definitely read the book as its a lot better then the movie also having watched more of the video, the urinal scene does kind of exists, Oh just comments after tip tells him to use the male bathroom while she's in the female one and he comments afterwards that he enjoyed the cakes inside, which after questioning, tip discovers what he means.

i remember back in like 5th grade when this movie came out there was this guy at my school who was OBSESSED with it. A bit of backstory, I don't know why, but this guy like never showed up for school. The rumors stated that his mom let him stay home whenever he wanted, but hindsight tells me there must've been something else going on. It got to the point where if he showed up for a whole week's worth of school, he'd get half of Friday off to do something with the guidance councilor. After this movie came out, he showed up every single day for 3 weeks just so that he could go see Home, of all movies.

I remember one thing from this movie which has cemented it inside my brain forever. While my cousin was showing me his VR headset, he managed to get Home playing on a movie theatre app, and he pointed out this scene at 4:27 where a Boov is just looking smug af in a washing machine. To this day I believe that's the greatest scene in cinema history.

I only remember this movie because a teacher in school used it in class. What in gods green earth could this movie _possibly_ be educational about? The protagonists name. Gratuity Tucci. Or as she is called in the movie, Tip. Then we watched the whole ass fucking movie. I want to say it was just the teachers way to have an easy assignment. Watch the movie, remember tips exist, and can be called gratuities. You pass.

i remember reading the book that inspired the movie. i dont think i ever finished it, for whatever reason, but from what i remember it was a genuinely thrilling book with some horror elements. or at least, what a 10 year old deemed as horror. i think the word bitch made an appearance which surprised me SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK!! the most horrific thing from my memory is what happened to tips mom. i dont exactly remember how it got there, but basically a mole/tumor like thing was growing on the moms neck. later its revealed this is how the boov uploaded the human language to their database, which is cool but also freaky because of how the mom would act. she would sleep talk(and walk i think?), muttering random words and i think generally as the mole got bigger she became more distant. i really do wish to reread the book because wow. it really did lean into the post abduction world building in my opinion

I'm in middle school, so my opinion probably DOES NOT matter, but I personally (and shamefully) kind of love the alien designs. They're kinda cute. The weird little nose/proboscis (if that's what they are) are kinda creative, I haven't really seen many entities with that. (Besides antennae and most bugs with anything sticking out from their body. Catfish can actually taste through their whiskers!) And they're just.. Square. Squishy. It's cute. I like them. 8/10 character design. Rest of the movie sucks.

I’ve actually read The True Meaning of Smekday and it was pretty good. Something that I distinctly remember though is that the Gorg were not going after their young. There wasn’t some big misunderstanding. They were in fact trying to commit space genocide against the Boov. They were very deadly. I understand why they ended up changing that in the movie though. Don’t like it, but I understand.
