Oh my gosh.... I've watched you for a few years and I can tell where your standing as in reference to your house.. I can tell your driveway is behind you and that's the old blue spruce that just fell down a few weeks ago..... PLUS! your new addition to your property.. Oh my .... SUCH A DIFFERENCE!! You and Aaron have done some awesome work...

I’m watching this 3 years later and can’t believe how different your garden looked! Especially the new property in the background-just a field! You are so much more comfortable in front of the camera too. I think I will use some soil conditioner as mulch to improve my clay soil over time. Great video 😊

Me: *going through the older videos after having watched the new videos.* sees blue spruce in background* oh no! Laura! You're gonna lose that in 3 years from now to a windstorm! But I can't warn you! Oh well. It's super neat to see how much has changed over the year! The process is super cool 😎

I love that G&B Soil Building Conditioner. I use it as top mulch too, and I use it to put on grass after seasonal thatching and reseeding. It's really great stuff. Our yard started as sand, but after using this in all of our beds for 5+ years, the character of the soil has really changed. Our plants are super happy and we rarely get weeds (with zero spraying or chemicals of any kind.)

I’m getting hooked on gardening. My only problem is it’s expensive having it as a hobby. Plants are so expensive. Soil, mulch, fertilizer and tools can drain your bank account. So I’m doing it gradually. Thank you for all your bright ideas. Stay safe.

I also agree about bag vs. bulk mulch or soil. It is a tremendous amount of work to shovel/move/shovel...... I've found the quality of the soil/mulch is usually also better than the big load- you don't always get 'what you looked at'! Gorgeous shot of the house at the end. It reminds me of where I spent summers when I was young.

I agree with you about bag mulch as opposed to bulk mulch. Infinitely easier in bags. However with almost 5 acres of garden and I find that bag mulch is just to expensive so I, as you say, get it delivered and dumped in our driveway and then shovel it into the wheel barrow and move it to where I need it, usually up hill, then shovel it out onto the beds. I normally get 10 cubic meters of the stuff. I'm not looking forward to doing that again in a few weeks. PS love the Versailles Garden specially now that you have made it symmetrical can't wait to see the finished plantings.

At one time I didn't believe in mulch, I do now as long as I make sure that I leave some space around my plants. Last few years the weeds have become out of hand and mulch helps. I have a dolly to move the bags, I'm a senior without any help. Thank you.

Yes. I agree, I would love to know what you put into your compost heaps Vs what you put elsewhere? In Australia, and on a farm, I can build a fire pile. I used to put everything on it but finally I’ve built 2 division compost cement L & H posts with treated pine. Easy for the little tractor to turn it. New on one side and old on the other. But... I still worry about what to put in it? Although I would not put insect or fungi issue tissue in it (that goes straight to the fire pile..) but Can I put weeds into my compost?

LOVED this one. At Walmart, I found a new product: It's a thick brown paper mulch infused with fertilizer. It's kind of between a brown paper and a cardboard and comes in a roll. They must have heard about all of us who use newspaper or cardboard as mulch! Anyway, I purchased a roll and am anxious to try it. I'm with you on the bag vs. bulk mulch. I used to get bulk, back when I was younger and could hop into the truck and unload it into piles around my gardens. Those days appear to be over! So now I purchase EVERY time there is a sale, and I keep it in the garage. If I notice a bare spot, it's easy to retrieve a bag and get it out there. I like the triple shred the best. It gives a refined look with no big chucks in it.

I never knew about the planting compost or the soil building conditioner! I am stopping the use of straight mulch because it is way too "barky" and it takes a long time to break down. Sadly my white birches started dying. I realised too late that the pine mulch we were using over the years created (great for weeds) but a shocking barrier and the ground underneath was sooo dead dry. Even with huge amounts of rain. Some hanging on since I’ve resolved, and others holding on to as the trunks still look nice during the winter. BUT ordering new bare root semi advanced trees and will completely replant come July. We get borer in our birch here and if you want white trunks you just have to always consider a 7 year renovation if you want birch trees.

I rarely use landscaping fabric plus mulch around plants anymore because it is a hassle to remove to amend the soil. Still, there are times when it's very helpful, especially as a temporary measure somewhere or with long rows of certain plants (like Laura's row of boxwoods). When I do, I use bulk mulch rather than put more plastic bags into the environment.

How does the compost or soil conditioner work for weed suppression? Here in Oklahoma any bare 'soil' is ripe for spurge, crab grass, and tons of other weeds to take over super fast. I love the look of the planting compost used as mulch but worry I'd lose my plants among a sea of weeds.

Laura, I luv luv your videos and so excited about the baby. I am a bit curious though about the purpose of your greenhouse. You always have it stocked so full of beautiful plants. So .... do you as a business sell these plants to customers who come there to buy (like a garden center) or are the plants only for your use in your garden? Just trying to understand the basic premise of why you moved from your already gorgeous house and garden onto such a large property that needed so much work. Guessing it was to expand your business in many ways ... but I have never heard you talk about it. Just curious about what all you offer from there and what are your dreams and ultimate plans for it all. Huugggs from Ohio
