MT Continuum: A toolkit in your pocket. That's what the revolutionary original Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool (PST) by Tim Leatherman promised its users. In many ways it delivered just that. It was small, lightweight, and fairly capable. Today's MTs are even better and have improved on the innovative and original Leatherman concept. It is a good feeling being able to save the day with a multi-tool that you've brought along and an MT in your system gives you piece of mind. Cutting, driving, filing, opening, driliing, reaming, prying, grabbing and many other capabilities are yours if you have your MT with you. Current designs, like my reference medium-duty Leatherman Charge series, can replace the EDC blade with their quickly accessed and well-designed blade options as well. And yet, amazingly, few people carry the MT with high percentage. That's a shame because an MT can also offer key capabilities in emergency situations as well. But of course and as discussed here, the multi-tool or MT is still a compromise for the better capabilities of a full sized, purpose-built hand tools. Successive generations in the MT arms race have come closer to approximating the functionalities of these full size tools, all while maintaining the ever-important compact size, elegant design, and light weight that makes the MT useful and portable. Also Style should be a part of the functional design and but never its own pursuit if the MT is to remain true to its mission of functionality. "Design elegance" for me is the integration of compactness, versatility, ease of use, comfort, strength and durability into a compact and lighweight MT. Ingenius approaches to this goal in successive MT generations make MTs interesting, engaging, and fun to collect as well. But a standardized methodology for their comparision and evaluation should be given. Set forth in this video are Nutnfancys categorical breakdowns of MTs for review purposes: Ultralight (2 oz or less), Light (2 to 5 oz), Medium (5 to 10 oz), and Heavy Duty (10 or more oz) multi-tools. These categories are weight-based since standardized size comparisons are more difficult to achieve. The smallest tools will provide some key functionalities but as the user accepts more weight and size, capabilities will increase (remaining true to my concept of "Firepower vs Mobility" • Mobility vs Firepower ... ). And each user approaches the tool evaluation differently base on his or her needs related to their activities; some need the pliers more, some the knife, some the scissors, some the belt cutter, and some the bit drivers. As a reviewer I approach an MT review from my own perspective and experience but include these considerations while occasionally using in or adjacent category comparisons for interest. Current MTs options such as Leatherman, SwissTool, Gerber, and SOG serve prepared individuals every day with their already impressive capabilities. As long as the designers stay true to concepts of lightweight, compactness, and design elegance future MTs could even be better. /////////////////// Music: www.archive.org....

i get laughed at too for carrying around a knife or a multi-tool. then the people laughing are the ones who need it most. my favorite are the people who ask for a knife, then when i give them mine to use they go "dude why do you carry a knife?" and im just like "well obviously its a good idea since you need it and i have it, but if youre gonna question me ill just put it away"

totally feel you on that! A lot of my friends laugh at the fact that I carry my S2 Juice, but they stop laughing when they need one of the tools on it. I was at a Christmas party this past year and I was using the cap lifter on the S2 to open my beer. Some laughed at first, but as the night went on more & more ppl were coming up to me saying "hey can I borrow your tool for my bottle" I just laughed. but it is good to be able to save the day & maybe show some sheeple the light. peace.

Hey Nutn I pity those who don't carry a multi-tool on a regular basis. this last week coming back from National FFA Convention, our Tour Bus's bathroom door broke on the inside so it could not open. I ended up using my Bucktool to take out about 30 phillip head screws and put them all back in. Once again, I was the Hero because of Nutn's guidance. Great job dude!

I love it when I carry a Multi-tool or really anything I carry for that matter at some point of the day someone comes to me and says ... "Hey, do you have something to get this job done?" = Could be screw driver, scissors, pliers, knives, lighter (don't smoke) , rope, etc.... its about being prepared and a GREAT way to have pretty close to everything is by having a Multi-tool!

I really appreciate the fact that you're so objective and you focus on what matters. Sure you may have longer videos, sure they may go off here and there (not a bad thing, you're passionate), but when it comes down to it, not only are you giving me good information, you're also informing me on a point of view. I've been looking for my "MT" for the past few weeks and each time I telling myself, "man why would they put that in there, that's useless", and didn't think until this video. So thankyou

Interesting to hear you say about converting people to carrying a MT. Whenever I 'save the day' with my Juice S2 people always where they can get them and at how much. But when I tell them they says 'hmm, I don't think I need one actually...... No, you don't, BECAUSE I'M ALWAYS AROUND! I find a real struggle to get people to understand the awesomeness of MT's. Such is the attitude of the sheeple.

This video is like a parade of every reason I subscribed to your videos. In particular, I appreciate your constant acknowledgement that different tools suit different people. My long search for a multi tool has recently ended at a Sog Powerassist, reconfigured with a scissors, awl and saw blade. It's because of the kind of thought process in this video that I arrived at my choice, and it proves how everyone's needs ARE different.

I have a buddy who's birthday is this weekend and is a backpacking nut like me... who's got a $3 MT (drop it and it would break into a million pieces). So I say to myself "Self, your friend needs a decent middle of the road MT to really start out..where should you go for advice?" NUTNFANCY OF COURSE! So after watching this and taking things into consideration, I got him a middle of the road Leatherman Fuse. Not too shabby for $39 and it's heads above what he has now. Thanks again Nutn. You rock!

Important point regarding 2-hand opening blades & tools- they're safer. Like a Balisong, with a Supertool, Rebar or SOG, you cannot be injured by a closing blade or too: the handle prevents that by design. As a result, i'd suggest that design is truly the best for HD use, tho worse for EDC.

Well, your one sentence made me buy something that I thought I would never buy... This sentence was "MT is an independence in your hand". I have searched high and low and I came up with Leatherman Sidekick, paying 180 PLN (or approx. 60 USD or 45 EUR). I know it's cheap, I know it is a basic model but by God-I have already saved much time and make many people astounded by the fact that I have pliers, a knife, a saw, serrated blade, two screwdriwers and tin opener in one and with me all the time!

very thorough video. I personally think multitools have their place, especially around the house. I carried a leatherman for years but recently stopped because of the weight and bulk and the fact that in a few years I used the pliers maybe one or two times. I keep it at home within reach so I don't have to go to the toolbox and look for something to use. I now carry a good quality swiss army knife with me and love it. I've owned my Leatherman Core in black for 5 and a half years. I've had to send it away for warranty service twice from Iraq. I've learned the capabilities of it as a nail remover. A claw end hammer is better for that purpose. My needle nose plier broke off during that procedure. The only thing you need to do, if mailing it to Portland, Oregon for service, is to pay for shipping. Leatherman will send it back to you on their ticket. love it.

Greg hahaga There should be true, modular multi-tools. Such that you can get the base pliers and just choose which other tools you use with it. Save weight or have more options or different options. Don't want a knife in your MT? Add a ferrocerium rod with a low-profile cover. Don't need a flathead screwdriver? Add a an allen wrench or a star wrench. Add multiple allen wrench heads for the various things you tighten with them. On my AR, I know I need an allen for my optic mount, a star for my VG, and a flathead for my wind/elev adjustments. This should be obvious to any manufacturers that use their own tools.

I bought a juice s2 and love it. One problem. When i use my fingernail to open one of the flat head screw drivers; It digs/jabs into the top of my thumb (its like an annoying hurt) You just have to watch how you open the flat heads. Other than that. I use it at work to torch off melted plastic from parts such as washers, screws etc. It distributes heat very nicely. You can sit there and torch the needle nose and the metal in your hand won't even get hot. Fantastic!!!!

I notice that Leatherman is leaning towards skateboard, snowboard user tools now. I wish they would lean more towards hunters as far as gutting (gut hooks), skinning (more rounded blades) and bone saws in their heavy duty tools. Maybe start a line of extra heavy tools longer and wider. Just thinking outside the box.

I've come down to using my two fav's. On duty it's the charge AL. Gloved hands, this tool opens with ease. When I'm carrying EDC it's usually the swisstool spirit. It's smaller with such a great variety of tools. If a can't take the weight I usually with go down to a Swiss Army knife relevant to my clothing type and needs that day.

That was a looong video, haha. It's great that you made that point that people compare apples to oranges in terms of the different sizes and ranges of multi-tools.

Great review, as always :) I have to add if you are already carrying medium to heavy multitool or any kind of a multitool in a sheath and you are a technical person like me is better to also have some universal screwdriver with bits, you can get these very cheap and they will do the job much better then the multitool, great thing is that most of them will fit in your sheath.

Nice video, you're the only guy I know that can get this in depth of philosophy for anything! I have the Leatherman PST II, as well as the Leatherman Charge ALX tool, which I just sent in for repair as I snapped off the eyeglass screwdriver (Bogus!). Awesome tools though.

This vid rocks. Yes...40+ minutes devoted to multi tools. My first "multi tool" was a Swiss Army Knife...and I used the crap out of it. Unfortunately, I tried to use it for tasks beyond it's physical capabilities. Fast forward a couple of decades and I bought a Leatherman Wave...and then a Leatherman Micra (which is my most carried multi tool)...then a P4...then a Gerber Multiplier...then a Leatherman CS4 Juice....and then a Swiss Tool. I have all of those and so far...the Leatherman is my fave.

You really have to understand the concept of "duty cycle". It means the amount of use you can get from a tool in it's lifetime before it wears out of breaks. From my personal experience, you really want the models with the locking blades. My personal preference is for the Leatherman Super tool. The blades lock open and you've got a stronger frame and jaws...

I love multi-tools! Probably because I just have a thing for gadgets and stuff... but aside from a primary blade, I always carry my Leatherman Squirt S4 (the scissors are awesome!), and a Victorinox Swiss-Card. I know the Swiss-Card is a bit redundant, but it fits so nicely in my wallet!

Excellent vid as always but this was especially relevant because I've been looking for the best tool in the office environment. Juice S2 is the winner! long live the scissors!

To answer your question I don't leave the house without my leatherman surge on my belt. Its saved my bacon a number of times when I did not have a particular tool.

the correction was unnessesary, 154cm is steel and steel is iron carbide or iron and carbon. Good vid btw!

I got one of those back in '92 as well!! Ha! I keep mine in my safe. It is still a great tool! And it may be a collectable one day. Hold on to that tool. I have an expensive SOG that is good, but I have mixed feelings about.. Good review.
