The Mummy (1999) is a fresh reimagining of the Universal monster icon that leaves the slow paced horror behind for guns, swords, and adventure. In this video essay I explore how and why The Mummy perfectly captures the spirit of the genre ultimately making it an adventure masterpiece.

A monster movie anthology following the O'Connels would have been a wild ride. Come to think of it, their backgrounds could have played well into a vampire story with Eve getting called over to Transylvania to help excavate Dracula's castle and Rick bumping into Van Helsing in the local pub.

Because it was meant as a sort of action adventure horror movie and by all it really is that good . I mean not great but still one good remake of a classic that has become a classic on it's own right . Many critics at the time blasted it as a lame CGI monstrosity and said that people should buy tickets for the phantom menace instead of this but we all know how it turned out . The main reason I like it is because it has charming charecters and an all around good story with solid performances and A okay sequel.

@@chrisossu2070 I'd argue that the two characters are pretty similar Nathan likes to explore the unknown and seek out treasures (so he could plunder and sell them). Nathan would often find himself in precarious situations and forced to become the reluctant hero of the story. Brendan, or Rick O'Connell, is a mercenary that works for money and became a reluctant hero at the end, motivated by his love for Evelyn. Both characters are charming, quick witted and they both have that sense of adventure about them. That's why I think they are very similar to each other.

The thrilling adventure of digging shovel tests, the romance of 1X1s, the panoramic vistas of pedestrian survey...and depressingly few secret societies of power-mad Sumerian mages desperate to recover that unidentifiable lump of rusty iron. But you do get to travel a lot and work in remote towns in the backwaters of America. So at least there’s a higher than average chance of encountering some cannibal hillbillies.

You were so right when you said it's the last of its kind, movies today try to be outlandish, funny, self-aware etc. but end up being anything but that and can be a real slog to get through. I've not even seen the Tom Cruise Mummy but I know the type of film it is since there's already tons like it being churned out of Hollywood today. movies try to be what the audience can connect to. I see PEOPLE try to be outlandish, funny, self-aware, etc..and I just look at them with a certain.."I don't like what you're doing" look. But that's just the era we live in. We have so much information so quickly and it all blends together..with media..that the newer generation is EVEN MORE of "know-it-alls" than before. And they try to incoporate all those ideas into one thing. Well, the movies have ALWAYS tried to connect with it's audiences by using the mindset the audiences have...and that's why our t.v. shows and movies are turning out to be the way they are.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Playing classic tropes to the hilt and doing it WELL is a FAR better mark of talent and skill in writing than simply subverting tropes for the sake of subverting them. Dozens of wannabe "artistes" desperately subverting classical tropes to show how "novel" and "innovative" they are always seem to forget that they're not the first people to try doing that - the people who did it before simply didn't write stories worth remembering.

The problem most writers who want to subvert tropes or flip archetypes have is that they don't understand them well enough to do so. They are beginners attempting tricks only a master can pull off and it's painfully obvious to the audience every time it happens.
@kireduhai9428
@kireduhai9428 4 жыл бұрын
@@RandomCarrot2806 I don't think I agree with that. Trope subversion is hardly the domain of master writers. Anyone can subvert a trope - most classic tropes simply don't merit subversion. Every trope has its opposite or subverted form - but not all of those subverted forms are worth remembering or are inspiring. Classical tropes are classic precisely because they work at inspiring and being compelling narratives. Are there trope subversions done well? Absolutely. And they're usually really bad tropes. And subverting them effectively doesn't really take much skill. Can skill at writing help you subvert them more effectively? Yes. But no writer, no matter how masterful, can turn a good, classic trope on its head and still expect it to make a good story.

If you try to subvert a trope without understanding the trope then your attempt will fall flat every time. Understanding and subverting a trope effectively shows mastery of that trope making you a master of it, maybe we have different definitions of what a master is? I disagree completely that subverting or turning a good trope on it's head can't result in a good story. You get the bad, the confusing and the forgettable subversion of tropes when the writer does not understand the trope or why it exists. Bad writers think their job is done by just flipping the surface of the story on it's head when attempting subversion but they forget about the underlying structure of it all.

@@RandomCarrot2806 I never said subverting tropes automatically makes a story bad. I said no matter how masterful a writer is, subverting a GOOD, CLASSIC trope cannot be expected to make a good story. Plenty of tropes deserve subversion. Plenty of others are far, FAR better if they are NOT subverted. My point is that it's not the writer's mastery of writing that makes trope subversion work or not - it has far more to do with WHICH tropes they are subverting.

My favourite moment out of the whole Mummy trilogy has to be the part in Mummy Returns where Brendan Frazer stabs the Scorpion King with the spear and the mummy just lightly jogs into frame, bends down on one knee, throws his hands out and goes “Noooooooo” really half-heartedly. It has to be one of the most unintentionally hilarious scenes ever, and really captures the early 2000s cheesiness that made the Mummy series so fun.

This movie, in my opinion, it's an underrated classic. It's one of the few films that I can watch many times and not get tired. It's a shame that Hollywood has no imagination or even wonder. Now all they do is prequels, reboots and remakes.

Me and my brother always commented that the 1999 Mummy felt like a spiritual successor to Indiana Jones. Two decades later and only a few films have been able to match that wonderful balance of solid characters, exotic locations, and awesome action.

6:28 in an alternate universe, universal had the idea to revive the monster franchise with Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz at the helm, both of whom steered this money boat to greatness and get married in real life with each movie being hit after hit after hit, thus making making them the Hollywood darling couple, which also made Hollywood go down the road of quirky adventure films all across the board across all studios, which was all thanks to the Frasers, whom we and Hollywood grow old together with...instead our universe gets the sequel plague. As well as, soul crushing alimony for Brendan Fraser after "that clap".

What's funny to me about that is actually the trailer voice actually says "UNIVERSAL PICTURES INVITES YOU..." Which I always loved. There's something very charming and old-world about that. Even with the modern coat of paint... Just a damn fun movie. Everything about it. I love this shit.
