Fun Fact: Michael Caine only agreed to be in this if he could play the character as if this was a serious Scrooge film and he could treat the muppets as if they were real people. For me, this absolutely makes the film.

The best rendition I ever saw was Patrick Stewart's one-man show on Broadway. It was essentially a straight reading of the book with Stewart acting out every character, including inanimate objects. Sadly they haven't released a video of it, but Stewart did also play Scrooge in a film version as well. I understand the NYPL Performing Arts library has a tape of it, but it would have to be watched on premises.

The 2009 mocap animated version with Jim Carrey, of all versions, is also surprisingly close to being verbatim from the book, for the majority of its dialogue. Indeed, it's the only version I have seen where Christmas Present's lines disavowing self-proclaimed religious politicians, who at the time tried to deny the poor from accessing bakeries and the like on religious holidays, can be found in an adaptation. I can understand why that version is less talked about, however. Mocap animation is often the quickest to age poorly, for starters, and for another that version's slapstick filler definitely felt far more like filler than anything in the Muppet version. Muppet slapstick is hard to do poorly, though, to be fair.

J. Draper's youtube channel just did a historical analysis (reaction) to this movie comparing its accuracy to the book, and she pointed out that the decision to have a narrator character reading lines more or less verbatim from the book let it use a lot of Dickens original phrasing that normally doesn't wind up in stage versions due to lack of a narrator. The main divergences are that they edited out all mention of boiling christmas pudding because modern Americans don't have that, and they changed young Scrooge to already dislike Christmas when the Ghost of Christmas past's main message in the book was "you used to love Christmas". She also pointed out some British propriety/social class things like Scrooge sending a turkey to Cratchett's house but NOT showing up uninvited, and instead going to his nephew's party which he had been invited to. (And then the bit about increasing his salary happening the next morning, which would have meant Piggy couldn't be there, and also that the lead actor couldn't steal Tiny Tim's last line...)

'A Christmas Carol' was the first Dickens book I read (in primary school), and I think that this movie is a wonderful introduction for children to classic literature. If they do read it (you can imagine kids saying to their parents, 'Gonzo told us to read the book' - brilliant!), they would be drawn through it by recognising the pieces of the script that were taking directly from the book. It was a clever, creative melding of literature and entertainment to give children an understanding of how wonderful those stories are. I was so happy to see, later, the adaptation of Treasure Island in the same way, starring Tim Curry.

@@nsasupporter7557 I heard his heart wasn't really in it, as he'd had a complicated relationship with his father and his father's creations; like a lot of children of people we view as geniuses, Brian often felt his father was neglecting him in favor of his work, so basically becoming the heir apparent to the studio was pretty rough for him. Not helped that one of the few places Brian tried to step in and put his foot down as the new boss was shot down by Disney; that being his insistence that Steve Whitmire _not_ be made the new Kermit. He'd already known for years that Whitmire could be egotistical and demanding, and being given the frog only made this worse. Not only did Whitmire grind down Kermit's edges like what happened to Mickey Mouse, but over his 25+ years as Kermit, he picked up a shocking number of accusations of sexual harassment. And this eventually led to Whitmire's dismissal in 2019. Anyways, all things considered, I think Brian did am admirable job making the best of a bad hand.

My favorite version of A Christmas Carol, and my favorite traditional Christmas movie full stop. I love Gonzo’s turn as Charles Dickens, this was the first movie where he had Rizzo were paired up and they have stuck with that through various other films and tv shows since. Michael Caine steals the show as Scrooge. Despite being surrounded by colorful Muppets, he gives a serious performance (at his own insistence) which helps you get lost in the story rather than worrying about why he is dealing with a bird and a bear in the past flashbacks. The next Muppet movie to be released was another adaption of a public domain work, Muppet Treasure Island, where Tim Curry played the one legged pirate Long John Silver, a performance worth seeing.

To add to this amazing adaptation is the brilliant, in-your-face lyrics in the song writing. The redemption story of Paul Williams and being brought on the project by Brian is a powerful story of grace! Perfect for this amazing classic!

"What's great about Muppet's Christmas Carol is that Michael Caine treats his Muppets as fellow actors, and what's great about Muppet's Treasure Island is that Tim Curry treats himself as a fellow Muppet." ^ old internet proverb

I love how Fezziwig (or "Fozziwig" here) has a "rubber chicken factory" in this version (because Muppets) but Scrooge casually says that like it's normal. Some jokes are funniest when you *don't* draw attention to them. It is said that Michael Caine's performance in this is so good because he treated the Muppets like fellow actors. He keeps such a straight face through the absurdities they add to this world, and while it makes some scenes funnier, I think it also helps the audience take things seriously when it counts.

So if you don't know, Statler and Waldorf play the Marley brothers in this version of the story. Waldorf's line, "leave comedy to the bears", is a reference to how the two elderly men always heckle Fozzie Bear's comedy. Also, the first spirit that appears was complicated to film with, to say the least. And by that, I mean, the special effects for it. ALSO, also, there's a song that was cut from the film when it came out in theaters. The VHS release restored it, but subsequent DVD and Blu-ray releases removed it again. Even Disney+ didn't have the full film with the scene intact, but it was recently restored and it's found in the bonus features. Edit: I highly recommend watching the original Muppet Movie and Muppet Treasure Island, especially since Tim Curry is in the latter, and he practically steals the show. Speaking of, if you haven't yet, you should ABSOLUTELY check out The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tim Curry's in that one, too, and let me tell you, it's really something to see. And make sure you check it out in theaters afterward, as that's the BEST way to experience it. You can film a reaction at home to understand the plot and the songs, but in theaters, you gotta participate. They have a mirror cast with the film as the backdrop, you gotta shout specific lines at certain points, bring certain props, and of course, you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to do the Time Warp. People are gonna pull you outta your seat whether you wanna do it or not.

Love the Muppets and this movie! I'd call it the best of the Muppet films, in fact. My GF watches this one every Christmas. Her favorite line: "LIGHT THE LAMP NOT THE RAT! LIGHT THE LAMP NOT THE RAT!" The little bunny muppet is Beau Bunny, voiced by Steve Whitmire. He also voices Rizzo and Kermit; he took over after Jim passed until a few years ago when Brian Henson and Disney recast because Whitmire was too difficult to work with.

One thing I never noticed until I think last year: at the start when Scrooge throws the customer out of the door, Michael Caine is operating the puppet's mouth as he protests but makes it look like he's nothing to do with it. Also he brings the entire city to the Cratchitt's house, and a raw turkey that will take them *hours* to cook.

The bell is not a doorbell, but a servant bell. A house of the upper class would have multiple of them. Scrooge doesn't have servants, because those would cost money. But he is also too cheap to have the bells removed. However, when the ghost of Marley (or the Marleys in this adaption) appears, they all start ringing.

It's so much easier to understand Scrooge's views towards Christmas upon learning of his school years. When every other child went home, Scrooge's family never sent for him at Christmas. So every year for almost a decade he was entirely alone for weeks at a time, always with the knowledge that everyone he knew was with their families having a joyous time. So it's really no mystery why he grew up solitary and socially inept, and why he genuinely had no idea how to express his love to Belle in any manner other than finance. When you learn very young that there is no point in hope, then have such strong hope that you lose it becomes automatic to shut it out of your life.

In the Jim Henson world of Muppets, one of my favorite Christmas shows has always been Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas. I grew up watching it and have a copy on DVD since they rarely ever play it, even at Christmas time anymore. It doesn't use any of the regular Muppet characters but is still a Jim Henson production. I recommend it... and the music in it is really good too.

I've watched a lot of adaptations of The Christmas Carol since the 70s when I was a kid. My favorite used to be the one with George C Scott from the 80s, until I watched this one. This is my favorite adaptation to date. There are many great Muppets movies that are adaptations of famous novels. I would recommend you starting from Muppets Treasure Island with Tim Curry and go from there.

I've always loved the Muppets ever since I first saw as guest appearance on variety shows like the Jimmy Dean Show. I did not grow up with the Muppets as I was born in 1947. But loved nevertheless as an adult. One of my favorite TV shows was the Muppet Show which began airing in the late 70s. I am delighted that Mary and her fans decided on this the greatest of the Muppet movies.❤😅
