The fact that the guy sexually assaulted her, tried to burn away the evidence, chose to represent himself in court (you can ask to have one appointed for you if you can't afford one), and appealed his sentence after imprisonment demonstrates that he was of sound-enough mind. Sadly with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome people have a similar mentality to drunks, they have no impulse control and very little sense of guilt. They are unable to consider consequences of anything they do. I had a friend who had it, he lost a job he really liked because he didn't go in one morning because it was raining. He just wasn't capable of thinking that far ahead. I'm not sure what can be done with these people, they pose a permanent threat and there doesn't seem to be any realistic treatment. Maybe they need some form of semi-secure sheltered housing, a sort of prison that feels more like a home. I don't know, it is a difficult one.

@@nlwilson4892 The thing is, people are people as well as people with disorders. So someone with autism might have certain traits, for instance, but they also have a personality that makes them who they are, aside from their condition. I don't know your friend, but I bet he wouldn't have been your friend if you thought his 'impulse control' issues might lead to him following a girl, raping her and throwing her in a lake. This case hits so close to home. I was a student at UT when this happened. I was on campus for class that morning and walked by Waller Creek on my normal route. I took the same route after class and was shocked to see the entire area cordoned off and swarming with police and news cameras, in addition to hearing a body was found not far away in the creek. Fortunately, the University of Texas poured copious resources into grief counseling and other services to help the student body cope with the shock of what was going on. The amount of support from around the country was also very touching. I was a student athlete and when we traveled to national competitions that year, other teams would express their condolences to the University of Texas to show solidarity. The entire experience was just….heartbreaking and quite frightening.

@@dstinnettmusic - Every world religion? Religion has been one of the key causes of war, violence and oppression throughout human history. The Bible fully supports slavery, says you can stone your own child to death and says to execute gays. Other religions say you can stone women for adultery. Anyone who thinks the major religions spread empathy hasn't read their laws or studied history. Even the story of Noah is one of almost total human genocide because od was angry at his creation. Where's the empathy in killing practically every man, woman and child on earth and all the animals as well? People are free to believe what they wish but humanity would be better off and many conflicts would end immediately if we didn't have religion and I see no evidence to support the claim religion spreads empathy.

His family failed him and maybe the system failed him as well. But then again it is TEXAS!! I think he knew exactly what he was going to do when he followed her, and he did it. I wish he was old enough because think he deserved death! Now a couple of things I wish could have happened. I when she saw him, she would have doubled back, pretend she was meeting someone by saying loudly oh okay see you I am walking right in front of you. Do you see me? Maybe it would or wouldn't have worked.Prtended that she was video taping him in realtime. Saying I am sending you this picture of this guy or something. This case upset me so much.He is a monster. Maybe he will get some of what he gave to her while in prison. Her roommates were not concerned. Why was she even messaging them before she left. What was the point? I ask my friends to message me when home or I will come looking for them in the time they should be inside and place checked before letting me know they are safe.The could even tell if she ever came home. They should ha6 stayed awake until she got in. They at least could ha6 reported if she wasn't shortly afterwards or at least call her first. easy said but both a terrible childhood plus fetal alcohol syndrom, physical abuse, emotional abuse, autism, depression, schizofrenia, and still a teenager, is a recipee for disaster, you can feel bad for both situations, but people are obsessed with condemning because it's easier to do than trying to understand without agreeing or accepting the actions. a human mind is extremely fragile, with that much abuse even before he was born that was never going to end well.
@shaneiles5672
@shaneiles5672 7 ай бұрын
yea as the commenter before me said it is possible to feel bad for both human beings as emotions tend to be quite nuanced if you just ponder on it for a bit. Also I think people tend to feel bad more so about the circumstances that created the perpetrator in this case than they do the the perpetrator itself. Lastly there’s plenty of every possible combo of nature and nurture some kids raised great will still kill some will be saints some kids not raised at all may take a life while others might save one it’s impossible to say what exact event made the monster but it’s almost certain that childhood trauma is an extreme hindrance in the mental department so I think it’s completely reasonable and quite humane of people to feel sympathy for the kid that experienced trauma but without feeling empathy for the adult it made.

I don't know, do all the deprived children have the same level of depravity? Cpuld a child suffering from sexual abuse suffer on a same level as one who is scolded very so often? Sometimes, I find it's easy for people to say 'there's this...but don't forget THAT', to ride roughshod over the possibility of thinking for the antagonist. Quite possibly, Meechaiel's upbringing and lack of understanding following on from FAS may well have formed him into the mindset he had to attack Haruka. That it is not per se pure murderous intent with a sane mind and reasonable, rational thinking available, just a twisted mind allowed to fester, not set right nor straight like a broken bone, instead left to go crooked and wrong.

I deal with a lengthy list of mental health issues and disabilities, and for a real long time I didn't care about anyone except for myself. I never ended anyone, but there's a literal mountain of things I can point to in my past and say, "yeah, I did that and I'm super not proud of it." I don't do any of those things today, and I consider myself (after an insane amount of work with professional people) to have been somewhat rehabbed. I think the killer who is in the spectrum should remain in prison for the rest of his life. His elders should have been better role models for him had it not for addiction and poor disciplining methods, such as beating him up. He deserved so much better, but this does not justify his actions towards Haruka. As for Haruka, she did not deserve to die at the hands of this deranged teen. Though it’s hard to sympathize with the unnecessary brutality of the victim who had nothing to do with the perpetrator’s upbringing or current situation, it gives us a full picture because we often ask why but the why sometimes may only be explained by hearing all of the information. Your feelings are very reflective of the many lovely young people and adults I worked with who have autism. It is very hard work trying to fit into a world of neuro typicals when you yourself are neurodiverse . So hard in fact it can cause you to become depressed and anxious. I can definitely put my hand on my heart and say , I haven’t met one autistic human being that has murdered anyone, so please excuse the ignorance of people who can’t think beyond that box ! Once upon a time there were laws and prison sentences for people who loved someone of their own sex ? Those people also were shunned to the outside of what was considered normal and look at what’s happening today? Keep the faith I’m sure one day it’ll be better understood that not everyone’s brain works in the same way ? I think that if that young man killed that girl ,autism wasn’t the reason, much more likely to do with his mother pickling him in alcohol while he tried to grow inside her womb and leaving him with brain damage from alcohol consumption while pregnant, this leads to developmental delay, and an array of neurological problems that are not the same as autism at all! Love to you 🙏🏻❤️

Very well covered. UT has an enormous campus and it’s hard to find an isolated part of it, considering college students are night owls. As a UT grad, it is unfortunate that she walked a route that is probably one of the few isolating places. That late at night, the football stadium and alumni building are deserted. What is really sad is where she was found in the creek is literally a couple minutes walk away from 2 large dorms, which would’ve undoubtedly had at least one or two people up and about. She was so close to being within earshot of help. As a side note, Adrian, nobody in Texas would refer to University of Texas as Texas University. That’s a big no-no. That name would be more likely associated with Texas State University.

I agree! It’s astonishing to me that after cases like this occur, the city of Austin (& many other large cities) do nothing about the homeless problem. If this young man had been caught up properly in ANY of the social safety nets out taxes are constantly pouring resources into, this crime wouldn’t have occurred. Where were the social workers? The police? The educators? The courts? So many failures of the system. The man is still responsible for his actions but we as a society are utterly failing to prevent these issues by properly addressing potential criminal populations with the help they need to possibly avoid a life of crime.

I like your no nonsense reporting in your videos, I believe every person has an innate sense of right and wrong no matter their mental deficits. For a homeless person Michael was dressed very well in court, two as new suits with perfectly laundered shirts and matching ties. The crime could have stopped at a robbery not gone onto assault and murder, it shows an evil intent, not excused by mental illness.
