I think that's fair, it captured the epicness of the story. All of the cues and little motifs are just perfection, there are few scores that can come close. Its all interconnected and feels as if Shore was an archeologist who chipped out rock and discovered old music that he then put a modern spin on.

You just hear lord of the rings music and you are there in middle earth. I honestly think Lord of the rings wouldn't be as good as it is if not for the music. Specially the Rohirrim charge music just gives you goosebumps.

Jman Jman I've watched all 3 of those movies once a year every year since they came out and the ride of the Rohirrim never fails to create a huge lump in my throat, if not actual tears. When I first saw it I just thought it was a badass action scene but years later it really hits hard how willing these people are to charge into certain death purely because they know it's the right thing to do for their fellow man. A real iconic moment in cinema, which would be so much weaker without Shore's transcendent score. It's a beautiful thing when music tells the story better than dialogue ever could.

Their charge at helms deep, with gandalf shining white and pure in the lead, as all hope seems lost. And the rise of the music as gandalfs magic blinds the orcs. It's so insanely good. And then you get sams speech right after. For me, easily the greatest 15 minutes in the trilogy. Brings tears to my eyes.

Starwars has good music. The problem is - LOTR was planned and filmed as 1 unit, all 3 movies at once. Star Wars has been filmed by a million different teams across decades and they were making up the story as they went (looking at you disney). No matter how much Williams tried, it would never be as unified as LOTR. Also LOTR is awesome: movie, story and the music.

Hornyshark Excuse me, but that’s very faaar fetched. The scouring of the shire was unnecessary, home wasn’t the same for the characters that went to wars regardless, in opposition to the ones who didn’t experience it at all, is actually a very good contrast. Even if home is the same, after a war, you are not and will never be again.
@gilgamesh8334
@gilgamesh8334 4 жыл бұрын
Hornyshark I disagree, often wars are so fought far from home that they never directly or physically reach it. This is why I see the take of Peter Jacksons version more as the "Vietnam" style. The US (The Shire) was never bombed or even close to being attack, yet their warriors (The hobbits Sam, Frodo, Merry and Pippin), the US soldiers set out and fought against in hell on earth. When they come back, the war hasn’t necessarily changed their home, but it changed them all to a great deal. When our heroes sit in their tavern in ROTK and look at each other, it resembles war veterans trying to get back into society. They can never be as thoughtless and innocent again. Not after what they have seen, the war will not stick to their home, it sticks to them personally wich ist the sacrifice a soldier makes. Even Veterans nowadays go through this exact stage of silent grief.
@gilgamesh8334
@gilgamesh8334 4 жыл бұрын
Hornyshark Okay, I have to agree with on the note that it derives from Tolkiens view a after witnessing World War One. But giving that almost no one is alive today who witnessed world war 1, I think it’s save to say that Jackson pandered deliberately to "newer" generations. I think this isn’t a debate of right or wrong anymore, it’s just about why and for whom. Let’s end it peacefully here, it was delightful to have insights into your points, I hope you have a good day.

@Hornyshark I still think the outcome is great by the end and still has that sort of message, Frodo(which is more focused on) and the lot weren't really the same after coming home to the Shire that was in complete unawareness of what was happening in the big world and what they went through. So it is kind of like War does change the homelife… at least for the ones at war

An excellent movie is one capable of telling the story without any music at all. An excellent score tells the story without the images. Combined... brilliance. The Gray Haven's theme is played twice before the final scene, the first time is in Minas Tirith during the Siege when the army of Mordor has forced the Defenders of Minas Tirith to the upper levels and Pippin and Gandalf pepare themselves for what it seems like the final stand before all is over and Pippin says: "I didn't thought it would end this way". Gandalf says the journey doesn't end with death and describes what the land of Aman the Undying Lands, where Valinor is located, described as "The rain curtains of this world parts and everything turns to silver glass. Then you'll see it, white shores and beyond a far green country under a swift sunrise." Second time it plays when Frodo is completely exhausted by the burden of the Ring and begin forget the memories of the Shire and Sam with the words "Then let's get rid of it once and for all, I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you" lifts up his master and carries him up the slope of Mount Doom.

What a thorough treat to watch this. Thank you Ashton. It's easy to overlook the depth and nuance to this work, and how it so intricately melds with the storyline, but you really brought Howard Shore's work to life with this, and I'm grateful to you for doing so.

I can only say that this gentleman really understood both the book and the meaning within it. In my life i have never heard music that so truly brings out the meaning of the story itself. I can only say that this film will rdmain one of the greatest films ever made, every detail has been taken care of even down to the languages. The two men who bought this to the screen will never be forgotten, even the very start of the music perfectly with the start of the story. For both, i can only say that they have given the world a master peace in both music and story that will last forever. My only wish was that the first part had been the first film i.e.. that the Hobbit had been made first, truly making it a complete story as per the books, but i dare say that it will be being read by young and old for many many years to come, truly wonderful.

I'm a little sad that the other times we hear parts of the Grey Havens theme weren't mentioned. There are only two I can think of (in Minas Tirith when Gandalf and Pippin are talking about a "fair green country", and when Sam carries Frodo on Mt. Doom) but I love those little snippets and why they're there. I understand why they weren't included, though: you cant have everything, or else this would run way too long lol

I was super disappointed that theme was all but left out. It’s so hopeful and uplifting. Just the music, sans film, moves me to tears and goosebumps. I think it’s the the top 3 best themes in the films behind The Shire theme and The Fellowship’s theme. It’s used to perfection each time, especially when it comes in the midst of battle and desperation. Just talking about it gives me goosebumps.

As much as I love Peter Jackson I don’t think this trilogy should be referred to as ‘Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings.’ It’s the result of many geniuses and experts in their own fields coming together to create a masterpiece. It shows you what can happen when talented people come together, all pulling in the same direction for the same goal. God … I love LOTR so much
