Very common in Morocco. There's still a Jewish community but it is small and cannot maintain all synagogues and cemeteries. Muslim do it.

@@kd9252 Jews were always well off and protected in Muslim countries.. Infact Muslim countries provided them refuge.. Even today Jews live happily in Morocco, Tunisia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey and some in Yemen..

When Jews arrived in what is now known as Mumbai (Bombay), they chose to live with Muslims. Local Hindus didn't even understand the difference between Jews and Muslims. Even to his day, they Synagogue in Mumbai is called a Masjid. The muslims prayer "Salat" is referred to by its Persian name "Namaz" in the Indian sub continent. And guess what, the Jews of Mumbai and surrounding areas also call their Jewish prayers as "Namaz".

@@hfur7758 - You must be joking. Except for Turkey (which is ex-Caliphate), all are Islamic Republics!. First change them to 'secular' republic and then try to make an argument on harmony. Life is about equality, rights, mutual respect, honour, dignity, and cannot be measured in terms of 'harmony' where the non-Muslims don't have the same rights/equality as the Muslims in an Islamic Republic. Your argument is not only flawed, it is naive.

We also don't have same rights, equality, respect in so called secular hindu countries. So before putting any point just analyse properly. If you want to see the real Islamic Rule. Read about Umar R.A. as Caliph. When he conquered Jerusalem then He allows Jew to come, settle and worship there for the first time after centuries of persecution of Jew under different empires like Roman, Alexander, Persian rules. Drishti IAS has made a 5-6 hours of video about it. You can watch it and rectify your knowledge.

It isn't "radicalization." The ideology of Islam is indeed "evil,". but certainly not all Muslims are bad. Muslims are people. Islam is an ideology, open to criticism. Jew and infidel hatred is part and parcel of the quran. This is a fact. However, many choose not to follow those tenets. Those who seek to reform it put their very lives in danger. The situation here is the exception and not the rule, would that it were. We could use more of this attitude, acceptance, love and cooperation all over the world.

@@LadyMaven "Jew hatred". The Jews were literally saved by Islamic rule in Spain and under the Ottomans. If anything, it was the absence of an Islamic empire that lead to the massacre of Jews throughout history. If there was "Jew hatred", then Jews wouldn't exist, because most of them lived under Islamic rule, some even fled Christian lands. You're historically inaccurate.

Isn't it sad that such a good "cross religious" story should be such a 'standout' rather than being the norm. I am sure that there are many more scenarios like this however that never see the light of day due to the plethora of drivel published on YT. Thanks AO for this.

Whenever I visit these synagogues, I am usually the only one around. I wish we had more Jews in Calcutta like the old days. And not just the Jews, people of other communities as well like the Armenians and Chinese who called Calcutta their home but are reduced to a handful now.

Elisha Twena is my distant relative. He promised his old mother to stay in kolkata and look after the synagogue. He is the headmaster of the boys Jewish school as well. He never married, has all his relatives in Israel and Europe. Yet he remain alone after his mother passed away at the age of 90.

There was no problem btwn Jews and Arabs before creation of Israel in 1948..indeed the Jews lived with Muslim neighbour to escape from the perspectuion of Christian Kingdom..(the history) but the Britian ruined everything by giving the Palestinian land (the Britian have no right over the Arab land) but they gave to Zionist for their own benefit from Zionists

Shalom to Jewish brothers and sisters from Kolkata.There was a time when every one in ten kolkatan was a Jew now they make less than one percent of the population.I wish there were more.And I have mixed muslim-christian background.My mom is a Christian and my dad is a Muslim.We go to mosque on Friday and church on Sundays.I respect both the faiths and none of my parents faith preaches me antisemitism

Kolkata have 3 synagogues, i visited all of them care taker of all 3 are muslims you have put your name on visiter register & give aadhar number they will give you put Yarmuke on head , that's it Jewish cemetery is near phoolbagan

It's amazing that you don't see the problem with your comment that seems seemingly harmless. The fact that you put "especially" already dilutes what should be a universal human dignity. It should've matter who the person is or what their faith is. Tolerance must always be universal. Old Testament Jew or Hindu. Anything that dilutes that just makes war inevitable.
