Explore the biological and psychological factors that influence how we experience pain and how our nervous system reactions to harmful stimuli.
--
In 1995, the British Medical Journal published a report about a builder who accidentally jumped onto a nail, which pierced straight through his steel-toed boot. He was in such agonizing pain that any movement was unbearable. But when the doctors took off his boot, they discovered that the nail had never touched his foot at all. What’s going on? Joshua W. Pate investigates the experience of pain.

If you suffer, you won't do it again which will mean the body is safer. No suffering means there's no lesson learned and the body may get hurt again There's actually a condition which causes it so that you can't feel pain. You can still touch stuff and feel that, but no pain will be produced if you're hurt. This may sound awesome and like a superpower, but it's actually really bad and many people who have it tend to break more bones or die earlier

I have the delightful experience of living for the past 30 years with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). The straightforward manner in which you describe chronic pain makes this video a particularly useful aid in educating people about CRPS. It’s pretty hard to get people who have never experienced high levels of pain to empathise with someone who is in acute levels of pain all day, every day, for ever. We don’t make it up. We can’t just ‘get over it’. We are most definitely NOT being lazy or malingering. But the weird thing is, many of us actually ‘enjoy’ the kinds of short lived pain other people experience, such as Tattooing, piercing, very hot or very cold showers... because we can control those things...

2 things I found weird with pain, 1. If you have pain in a certain area, if you pinch your self, the pain in that area will lessen, but the pinch will feel a like worse than a normal pinch. 2. After a while of having pain in a area, the pain lessens, and becomes little to nothing. For example, if you keep spraining something in the same area, after a while you wont feel it as much as the first time.

An old injury from over twenty years ago has resurfaced and even pharmaceuticals can't help. I have created tools in my toolbox to counter this life-paralyzing state. I'm sure you know this one, lay down in a HOT water bath for 30 seconds. The heat in the water will take the pain away instantly if the body part is submerged fully. When you get out of the tub you've got a good 30 to 60 minutes of close to pain-free activity. I take several Hot baths a day. I wish you luck, better still, good health my fellow pain mate.

I always wondered why we continue to feel pain after we are aware of an injury. We would feel it initially to let us know an injury occurred, but once we are aware of it, the pain should subside or lessen. If I feel pain from something for too long, I will just get tired of it hurting and just do things like normal.
@WhyYoutubeWhy

It's exactly to stop you doing things like normal after you've been aware, for you not to think it is not something bad. Being aware of an injury for a few seconds is not sufficient for people to stop acting like they do.

this actually makes so much sense. i had a major hip surgery about 2 months ago and all my doctors and nurses and physical therapists keep telling me how well i’m doing and how positive i’m being when it honestly wasn’t hurting too bad. i obviously felt pain and some moments were almost unbearable, but for the most part i felt somewhat fine. i guess i didn’t really think oh this hurts i was just thinking oh this is very uncomfortable and i guess it changed the focus in my brain from pain to just uncomfortable. now i just feel muscle soreness in my hip and occasional intense pain but i’m still recovering and i feel i’ve done so much better than i thought i would

I've always thought pain was idiotic, and this video just proves me right. Seriously, what good is a sense that's meant to protect you if it can give you a sensation so severe that you lose the physical control required to react to the situation? As an example, if I'm getting my flesh flayed by a hungry tiger and the pain is so severe that all I can do is roll around on the ground in agony, that's not doing me any good. I'd be much better off if I could, oh I don't know, *run.*

3:50 this is more than true. Recently I was playing hockey when I was kicked in the head intentionally by a player who’s known to hurt others. This was the only out of town event I’ve been to that my parents weren’t there. It made the pain feel like I was trapped and this shadow was glooming over me. I had a pretty bad concussionI’m fine now.

Interesting, I just listened to a story on NPR about pain : How The Brain Shapes Pain And Links Ouch With Emotion. I suffer from chronic pain from MS and fibromyalgia, and this is helpful for me. I also have mental health problems that pain either causes or is made worse by the pain. Thank you!
