It's common to use 'internationalization packages' for things like help text that store a 1:1 representation of one symbol to another. They basically just have to invent a word for every word in the english version. Heck, they could just print it in a fancy font. It's not surprising that this is the way it is. You can probably find the culture-specific text files as artifacts that look like little plugins. So, while it would be possible to make it not actually english, it's a lot harder, and as lazy as programmers are, this is basically an exercise of the paint-by-numbers system of the internationalization machinery, and the developers were kicking the tires with gusto.

Sounds like a pretty probable explanation to me, yeah.

Notes on later research (thanks to Citillan): - no tribe speaks english; however, a) Polytopians have come to our world so contact may have occurred there, and b) Hoodrick and Elyrion are both English-based tribes - all polytopians are anatomically the same except for unique facial features like Cymanti and Elyrion

In my head canon, I just believe the Cymanti were bug hats that control folks. Either way, this is video is something insanely cool.

Here's my theory as to why the syntaxing is the same: maybe, somehow, it's a language without official syntaxing, the native speakers would use some ways to figure out what the sentences mean without sytaxing, like for example maybe cases, word stressing, and tones, and the translator just decided to use English sytaxing while translating. This is an *alien* language, meaning it doesn't have to have a syntax rule like Earth languages do. Also, cool vid. Insta sub!
@simulanger
@simulanger 2 жыл бұрын
Makes total sense to me except for the fact that there are no cases or non-syntactical means of information conveyance. Unless Elyrion has zero means of marking anything whatsoever because it's alien, and somehow things like roles don't matter to them. Although then the translations wouldn't be exact. Although I like the idea of it being in English order just bc the translators wanted it to be, and truly free word order.
@cranque__7737

I think there's some language spoken somewhere near indonesia w/ very loose syntax, so that "chicken person eat" could mean "the chicken eats the person," "the person eats the chicken" or " the person feeds the chicken" depending on context, just something I saw on a video once.
@dudestop5302
@dudestop5302 2 жыл бұрын
(sorry for long comment) @@simulanger Maybe they stress words or have tones in spoken language, so although in the written language we aren't able to understand completely what is being said if it wasn't in English sytaxing, in spoken language it's 100% understandable. Let's say, maybe, that a large amount of the Elyrian population is illiterate, maybe because in their alien civilisation they don't really write things down as much as we do on Earth, so maybe that's why the writing system hasn't really advanced that much for non-tone/stress understanding. That might explain the lack of cases/syntaxing in the written language to be able to understand it. And again, they're an alien civilisation, we always try to compare their language and comprehension to Earth ones, but maybe they have some other language features that we don't know of or comprehend things differently than we do, maybe their minds were just built different. As for the fact they use the *EXACT* words English does (except for the word "the"), maybe they don't really have strict rules on how to use words. It could be that some words exist, but don't have to be used, so like depending on the Elyrion speaker, they could say "day eat not, i hunger" or "I haven't eaten all day, I am hungry", and although it sounds weird for our Earth minds, both might be correct in their world. And again, the translator just decided to use them the English way. So on Earth we think that syntaxing, word usage, and just grammar in general are very important, maybe because we write things down a lot and need a way to get everyone to understand 100% of what is being said. But maybe in this alien civilisation they aren't really that much into writing and their language was made more for speaking/listening than for writing/reading, so they haven't really advanced that much in their scripting. Maybe it is just a "free language", where it really doesn't matter how you say things, just as long as you're understood, it's cool. again, sorry for long comment lol
@simulanger
@simulanger 2 жыл бұрын
No, you're totally right! The sad part is that whatever extra-morphosyntactical features they might have (tone, etc.) isn't encoded in the script and therefore the game help text. Meaning, we have no idea :(

nieuw and nieuws are also like this in Dutch, though -s is a recently lost case marker rather then a plural marker when added to adjectives, like nieuw (new), iets nieuws (something new(s)), which is quite interesting

Any game designers looking for people to make real conlangs for their games? Where can I submit my CV? (not the syllable structure)

5:31 your script seems too angular though, I believe that the Elyrion would write in a more cursive or somewhat more curved manner. I would also suggest that there should be lowercase letters, but I think that was just borrowed from the Latin alphabet.
