I am overjoyed to see people analyzing Endless Ocean. I had put hundreds of hours into both, and I actually wanted to be a marine biologist for most of my childhood because of it. It's a shame thay're as seemingly obscure as they are

a) was i alone in being scare stless as a kid thinking something bad in game was gunna happen? b) one more thing that adds evidence to the who chuthulu point is the story's mention of (paraphrasing here) R'lyeh's "mathimatically impossible artitecture". Ever since I was young, I was beyond confused as to the peculiarly geometric yet rounded nature of the ruin's sides. Also, a stretch: "storm god" could be Nodens. c) god everything new I learn about this game series, the more I love it. The unfathomable amount of detail the creators put into not just the mechanics but even the worldbuilding is outstanding. Plus the conservative use of Cthulhu as opposed to making it a big deal or even using his name is a genius idea by the creators. Hats off to the best easter egg I've seen in a long time. d) I can't thank you enough for keeping the conversation around the endless ocean going. I know everyone's said it enough to not be underrated anymore, this series is an absolute gem and I'm beyond happy to see people continue to talk about it, even to analyze it in depth.

I always assumed the Dark One was the false killer whale and the Iron Pearl was the jewel, 'cause the Great Aqua Cave was said to be home to a princess, but I never even thought about it being the orca! I guess it makes more sense that an actual jewel (the Jewel of Life) is the jewel being referenced, but the Dark One and the princess being affiliated had me fixated on the false killer whale. Edit to add: I also always assumed that the orca was the personification or manifestation of the storm deity, because Magu Tapa's description mentions him being guarded by another entity - one said to be even more terrible than he is. Plus, the Jewel of Life is associated with the storm goddess, so there's another connection to the orca there.

Oh my gosh, I have to put my two cents in here, because you've solved a mystery for me! I always felt Endless Ocean had tried to set up a Big Bad, but strangely didn't follow through. The e-mails stopped, leaving me to wonder if our correspondent had died, or just gone back on their meds. Nothing catastrophic happened as we continued our diving. We did meet the "good side," with the dolphins and the Great Mother, so it always struck me as strange we never found the terrifying Flood God. I wondered if maybe they'd had to drop part of the story for time or funding issues. But after reading your identification of the flood god with Cthulhu, I realize we DID meet the Big Bad. A gigantic, tentacled monster that lurks in the darkness. One that fights eternally with whales ... The Giant Squid in the Abyss. A quite terrifying creature if you come across it unprepared. That's the Flood God. An "alien" being - not a vertebrate, or an air breather, as opposed to the cetaceans allied with the humans. The developers were just so subtle I never realized it. Thanks for clearing up that mystery for me!

Another question arises from the tablets. If the people moved out west to rebuild their flooded kingdom, why does the flood kingdom have the tablet. Surely, that would have been inscribed somewhere in the newer kingdom, unless the structure we find actually is the second kingdom. Was there 2 great floods? Is there another structure hidden even deeper below the waves?

I haven’t played this game in a while so bear with me. wasn’t the mermaid cave said to be a castle where a queen lived?? but it sunk and she drowned inside. we find the false killer whale in the last room. if this queen is the princess from the story, it only further connects her with the “dark one”. the dark one being the false killer whale

That tracks since right off the edge of where the ruins are located is the deep open ocean that we are forbidden to explore, maybe cthulu really did come up out of the ocean and sink the village who knows, maybe he's to blame for Valka Castle too idk
