An exploration of the Wow! Signal, picked up at the Big Ear radio telescope in 1977. This signal remains unexplained to this day, and represents the best candidate we've ever detected of a signal of intelligent alien origin.

@@Jesse-cw5pv It looks that you do not understand how tiny is 10km/s in universe scale, you can get 0,5km/s only from standing on Earth equator via Earth own rotation speed, not to mention how fast is Eart moving in relation to Sun...
@deluxeassortment
@deluxeassortment 4 жыл бұрын
I think everyone missed the point of the frequency correction. The signal did not modulate, and thus did not exhibit the doppler effect (an object passing or a large object rotating or an object accelerating). Researchers simply surmised that if the frequency was emitted at the hydrogen line, rather than 50±5kHz above it, then the corresponding blueshift (not doppler shift) would indicate a velocity of 10km/s toward earth. This corresponds to 22369 mph, a bit faster than the ISS and in the range of comet speeds. The signal does not exhibit comet radio behavior, despite recent claims. If the signal was in fact emitted on the hydrogen line, it could have easily been emitted in another solar system, a star ignition, etc. It should also be noted that just because it is illegal to transmit at these frequencies doesn't mean someone didn't or that it wasn't a electronic phenomena.

What is the doppler effect? What does it mean that they corrected it? I looked it up, read the comments but I don’t understand :( could someone explain it like I was a child?
@deluxeassortment
@deluxeassortment 4 жыл бұрын
@@britneyspheres7yearsago11 Doppler shift is a bit of a misnomer. The correct term is blueshift, as doppler implies a modulation of frequency. It was a hypothetical. It is unknown what wavelength the emmision source was. It was surmised that it _could_ have been emitted at the hydrogen line and blueshifted due to incoming velocity, so they adjusted the signal to mimic a hydrogen line origin, so that known patterns could be compared to it. But it didn't necessarily originate at the hydrogen line.

I imagine that the signal was generated by mistake, then quickly shut down. Imagine a young alien. It's his first day on the job, perhaps, even, he is still in training. He works in a vast radio array tasked with contacting alien cultures. One day he sees a signal that he has been told to respond to. He sends the response signal just as his boss walks in and see's what he's doing. "Johnson, my God what are you doing?" He hits the off switch as quickly as he can then says, "We don't contact them. Those aliens a freaking nuts! I hope the poor kid din't get fired.

What perplexes me a lot are the obvious contradictions here: We are generally not allowed to transmit on the protected H1 frequency, so there's not a lot of noise from us in that range, but we listen for others primarily there. If a signal doesn't repeat it's not worthwhile for us, but when we send messages, we do it only once or for a very short period of time.
@zitro37
@zitro37 4 жыл бұрын
For your first question: Why would they have the same "forbidden" frequency? For the second one: Thats a very valid point, if we do, we do it only once and very short. But we do send multiple differnent signals out that have a special kind of code (our language) which could be encrypted by possible aliens :)
@xcq1
@xcq1 4 жыл бұрын
@@zitro37 The reasoning goes that every civilization that wants to communicate should select a frequency that 1) is not attenuated much during transit and 2) is tied to some sort of objective reference point. Every advanced civilization that uses radio waves for communication probably also does radio astronomy and thus knows about the 1420 MHz frequency of hydrogen. I think JMG has made some good videos about it that go into more details.

@faarsight
@faarsight 4 жыл бұрын
@WTFPurpleAlpaca The issue isn't whether or not it would be "worth it". The issue is how you get the funding. Governments tend to throw a lot more money at scientific projects than the public and a crowd funding scheme to fund such an expensive project is doomed to failure. This would also face a lot of scientific backlash since I can almost guarantee that a lot of astronomers would view this as a colossal waste of telescope time. You'd have better luck building your own telescope except that would be even more expensive. In short the best way to succeed at this project would be to convince the scientific community that it's a worthwhile project and all I can say to that is good luck.

Yeah, because it wasn't a serious contact attempt. They have done it in Arecibo after an upgrade, as a marketing stunt, which was a great idea by the way ;) Carl Sagan was one of the best science educators. The signal was directed at the globular cluster that isn't rich in metals. Chances are there are very few planets... Regarding WOW! signal, the issue is, the chance of this happening, that is someone contacting us, as a one-off, during few years of the radio telescope listening, and pointing at random points on the sky (reflector was stationary and rotated with Earth) is infinitesimal ;)

It was speculated that, if the signal WAS alien, that it might have been a tight beam interplanetary transmission that just happened to leak out and eventually intersect our planet after a long, long journey. It would seem also that concentrating a radio telescope on Sagittarius- with its thick concentrations of stars across the breadth of the galactic disc to the hub itself- would be worthwhile.

It was unmodualted and very narrowband, thats really a beacon. If it was a comms transmission it would have been modulated and we would not have seen it. Even a beacon requires a lot of power and I think its likely originated closer to us. Just my feeling.

@pavel9652
@pavel9652 2 жыл бұрын
Probably not, although it depends on how you define success. I think it would be enough to found some small to medium size radiotelescope to monitor the spot 24/7. I don't think it would be sufficient to rent a larger instrument, though. Even then, chances are the public interest would fade away, as it often does for many projects, see the crew founding science. Usually, there are a few key members who do half of the work and a flock of people with an attention span of a day or two. Many people have pointed antennas in the direction of the Wow! signal and found nothing. I think it is defo worth checking the spot from time to time, but the signal was very short, so I would not hold my breath.

Look at how we act against those of us that are different looking or speaking (and even those like us). And we (Human) (Mankind) want to find other life from other places not on Earth!? I guess we as (Mankind) ( Human) just cant get enough of being cruel to one another so much so, that we need to find new beings to be cruel too. No! I do not think there are other beings out there. I hope that they are not out there. If they are, I hope we never make contact,... Ever. Only those with the will to do harm, would not understand this. No!?,... Question,... Why do you (we) even have the least of thoughts against our fellow mankind, even unto those that done you (us) no harm? We have I'll thoughts of others over some,... No,... over a lot of ridiculous of reasons. Just take time to notice the feelings you have for those around you (not only those loved ones), and you will most likely notice that, if you're being honest with yourself. www.gotquestions.org/who-is-my-neighbor.html " Who is my neighbor, biblically speaking? Answer: Many Christians talk about the importance of loving God and loving others, and rightly so. Jesus declared these to be the greatest commandments (Mark 12:28-34; see Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18). The idea that we are to love others is sometimes more specifically stated as the call to love one’s neighbor as oneself. “Who is my neighbor?” becomes a natural question to ask. The command to love one’s neighbor as oneself comes originally from Leviticus 19:18, which says, “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” The Jews of Jesus’ day would largely have understood their “neighbor” to be their fellow Israelites. But God has a broader definition in mind. Loving one’s neighbor is more than simply loving those who are like us and who can love us in return. Luke 10 records an incident in which a scribe, an expert on the Jewish law, tested Jesus about what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus turned the question back to the scribe (Luke 10:25-37). The scribe responded with the command to love God with all of one’s being and to love one’s neighbor as himself. Jesus affirmed the response. But the scribe, wanting to justify himself, asked, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied with the Parable of the Good Samaritan. In the parable, a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho is attacked and left for dead on the side of the road. A priest walking by sees the man but passes on the other side of the road. The same happens when a Levite travels through. In essence, two Jews, both of whom were from the priestly line of Israelites and should have known and followed God’s law, failed to show love to their fellow Israelite in need. However, Jesus said, along came a Samaritan, a person generally disdained by the Jews because of cultural and religious differences. And it was the Samaritanwho stopped to help the injured man. He cared for the man’s wounds and paid for him to stay at an inn. In short, a person whom the Jews would have considered “unclean” and outside of God’s covenant demonstrated compassion for one who would have considered him an enemy. Jesus asked the scribe which of the three passersby was a neighbor to the injured man. “The expert in the law replied, ‘The one who had mercy on him.’ Jesus told him, ‘Go and do likewise’” (Luke 10:37). Our neighbor is thus anyone in our proximity with whom we can share God’s love. We are called not only to love those who are similar to us or with whom we are comfortable, but all whom God places in our path. In fact, Jesus said, “I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:44-48). God shows love to all people (John 3:16-18; Romans 1:19-20; 2 Peter 3:9). As His children (John 1:12), we are called to do the same. It is important to understand what true love is. We love people by genuinely seeking what is best for them. Loving others does not mean agreeing with everything they say or do, nor does it mean acting in ways that always gain their approval. Loving our neighbors means attending to their needs-both physical and spiritual. We love our neighbors when we, like the Samaritan in Jesus’ parable, have compassion for them and help meet their needs as we are able. We love our neighbors best when we share God’s truth with them. Jesus alone can save (John 14:6; Acts 4:12), and He alone can meet people’s every need. We love our neighbors, including our neighbors who seem like enemies to us, when we act toward them with a heart that first loves God. We love our neighbors out of an overflow of God’s love for us and as a way of demonstrating our love toward God (1 John 4:7-12; Colossians 4:5-6; 1 Peter 3:15-16). " Amen! GOD First!!! GOD Bless!!! Love All!!!

True that! Sadly this had happened 50 years ago, and the technology was in its infancy. Even these days, however, we monitor tiny bits of the sky. On the flip side, we have capabilities to respond to FRBs and point more instruments in the direction to collect more data. The mainframe computer processing data from the observatory had a single floppy disk of available memory and the research predates the IBM PC, so they had to make compromises. The scientist had been reviewing the printed data in his own time, as a volunteer, probably once a week over the weekend, and got this one four days after the fact ;) Had they got decent funding, they could have collected more information about the signal.

An often overlooked fact is that radio signals travel about the speed of light which would mean it would take about four years for the signal to reach Earth from the nearest star system to hundreds or thousands of years for the majority of star systems in our close galactic neighborhood.
