So to answer your concern w the herringbone pockets(this is just what i remember): the reason they switched out the gingham pockets for herringbone is bc there were durability issues w the gingham. I myself own the Tanuki EJKT3(Earth fabric, 18oz slubby, w/ a pure indigo, sulfur, and greencast indigo dyed warp, and a cheese dyed light beige weft. as a result, it’ll fade to more of a greenish turquoise color compared to typical raw denim which i quite enjoy) and i have an older version w the gingham pockets and a blue enamel coated top button. While the pockets look amazing and feel great, the fabric is THIN AF, especially compared to the pocket fabric on my 3Sixteen Panama Cloth Type 3s(which is an absolutely insane, limited, and beautiful jacket that 3Sixteen released a long ass time ago that i can rly only summarize as the best damn indigo non-denim jacket to ever be made/the superior sashiko jacket. there’s really no way you can get your hands on one at this point cuz it’s been sold out and discontinued, and i honestly just got insanely lucky getting one cuz a lady on r/rawdenim was selling a BNWOT jacket in my size so i leaped, and so far it’s the best raw denim purchase ive ever made. will send pics and more info abt the jacket if ur interested. there are a few(?) Panama Cloth stadium jackets that 3sixteen also made which I think are POSSIBLY floating around, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen em and they might be all sold out/not in ur size anyway if i had to guess. but it could be worth checking out. anyways moving on, but just wanted to say it). From what I remember, mainly with the jeans there was an issue w items tearing thru the pockets and forming holes. I’m pretty there was a thing where ppl couldn’t put their keys or any mildly sharp or protruding object in their jean pockets for a time cuz there was a reasonable risk and concern of it tearing a hole thru ur pocket bags, and I’m willing to assume the same deal was w the jackets at the time too. Hence forth after a certain period of time, they changed the gingham pocket bags to a much sturdier herringbone. While I don’t mind having the gingham pockets at all as I quite like it, I am careful to not out anything sharp like my keys in the handwarmer pockets. But seeing as you have the newer herringbone, you shouldn’t have that problem and are free to put whatever you wish in there with little to worry of damage(just have some common sense that’s all). TLDR: The pockets were changed from gingham to herringbone bc the older gingham fabric had some durability issues, so it was swapped out for the more durable herringbone fabric. Hope that answers your concern! P.S: Regarding the cobalt blue stitching, I really feel like it varies between models and fabrics on how good it looks. My Earth jacket is a Indigo x Beige fabric, and the stitching fits right in and honestly isn’t that noticeable, especially on areas where it’s more faded. Where as the darker jackets like the IDxID, or the Black fabrics, the stitching pops out a lot more against the dark background fabric, which could be a good or bad thing depending on who you are. Same thing works w the Momotaro’s pink inseam, on the lighter fabrics it’s more subdued, on darker fabrics it definitely stands out. P.P.S: Alternatively, if you really want something different, the Tanuki Red Cast fabric rereleased a couple months ago(Type 3 jacket included), and that actually has red stitching details instead of the cobalt blue stitching details. I’m willing to assume you can maybe find one if ur lucky? Most of em are probably all sold by now, but you should be able to find a few stragglers on different sites if you look hard enough. Not a guarantee though. Tanuki Type 3s I find fit more of a true to size/slightly baggy fit compared to the Type 2s, so that’s perhaps something for you to also think about.

Personally, I am in no hurry to fade any of my denim. I really, really like the raw dark blue look of new denim. Broken in, fit to body, sure. But dark and stark, that’s where it’s at for me.

Sauce Zhan on aliexpress has some interesting raw denim jackets and jeans I got a pair of raw denim jeans and they are really good for the price. They pop up on reddit rawdenim evrery once in a while.
