Police Squad! was actually a TV show that predated this movie. The team of Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker had a big hit in the early 80s with Airplane!, which featured Leslie Nielsen in his first comedy role. They were approached to do a TV show, but it only lasted 6 episodes before being canceled.

I'm really glad you guys found this movie funny. The comedies of the Zucker Brothers and Jim Abrahams has often been copied but never duplicated. There is almost a science to how they frame a shot, or reveal a joke. Definitely watch Airplane!, Top Secret!, and Naked Gun 2 1/2. They are all very silly. Fun Fact: Leslie Nelson was a dramatic actor for many years before being known for comedy. His deadpan, serious performance is what makes so much of the silliness surrounding him special. Also, as an American, there is a lot of absurdity (like with the statues, the condoms or the suite) that are so unrealistic and ridiculous you just have to laugh.

I actually sought out KZfaq reactions because of this movie. I was watching it with my friend, and when the pistachio joke came up, I said "Young people won't get this." And I was right. You've gotta be at least 40 to get that joke.

A funny thing a lot of people would miss nowadays is how chock-full of 1980s American cultural references this is, far too much to list. Even just the casting, half the people in the cast were iconic, from Leslie Neilson to Priscilla Presley (Elvis Presley’s ex wife!) to OJ Simpson (football hero before he was a murderer!). The immortal Ricardo Montalban. Pop psychologist Dr Joyce Brothers in the game announcer booth with well-known sport personalities like Dick Vitale, subtle joke. Even just the movie intro was a riff on the TV show this was based on, people would have known at the time; and Leslie Neilson taking out the political villains of the era like Ayatollah Khomeini all in a meeting.

I met Leslie Nielsen at a golf tournament in Connecticut about 30 years ago, he is hilarious and a really nice guy.

This has been, since I went with 3 of my friends from High School when we were all 15 years old, my all time favorite Comedy! It was a completely packed Theater, and it was one of the best movie going experiences of my life! I have never laughed so hard as I did during the Press Conference Scene when Lt Dreben left his mic on while in the restroom! Still to this day this movie makes me laugh!

The spitting was chewing tobacco. Baseball players used to be know for using chewing tobacco and you have to spit the "juice" out every few minutes. A lot of people I knew in the military used it ( or dip which is tobacco in a pouch, same deal but it was easier to get out of your mouth) and they would use disposable coffee cups as spit cups since you couldn't be spitting everywhere. You had to make real sure that the coffee cup you picked up was yours or else you were in for a disgusting day. I used to use it in Boy Scouts on camping trips. My mom didn't want me to smoke but didn't mind me doing chewing tobacco. Go figure.

Hey, you two ... love the reaction. You both are so funny. Anyway, the term "beaver" is an aquatic animal and the largest rodent in America, but it has also become slang for "a vagina". So, when she is up on the ladder, and out of the picture, he says, "Nice beaver", implying that he can see and admires her "parts". She completes the joke by saying, "Oh thank you, I just had it stuffed", just before she hands down an actual stuffed beaver (stuff animal ... from the taxidermist). It's a play on words, combining the 2 meanings. This movie is a LOT like Airplane!, which you haven't seen yet ... but should !!! I think it's even funnier than this, and the director in this one is also 1 of the 3 directors in that one.
