The Narragansetts and Rhode Island history

Lorén Spears, executive director of South County's Tomaquag museum, delivers an uncomfortable reckoning on Rhode Island history. For example, during her Tommy Rocket Show interview, she says:
"Without the Narragansett people, there would be no Rhode Island at all."
"A lot of people don't know that Roger Williams owned slaves."
Native children were sent to government boarding schools "to erase" their native culture.
Historians seem to have ignored the anti-indian propaganda woven into the Declaration of Independence.

It’s interesting in New Mexico, our PowerPoints at the State level begin with an acknowledgment that we are on the unceded lands of the Navajo, Pueblo. I recognize you and your culture.

As I understand it, Indians have been in North America for ten thousand years, Europeans for 1,000 years. During that 1,000 years humans have advanced technology, art, literature, transportation, mathematics, manufacture, music, politics, weapons, materials, space exploration, and communications. In 10,000 years Indians apparently chanted, danced and lived the same as animals.
