4 ай бұрынShane Hmiel is widely known as one of the biggest “What ifs” in NASCAR, however his story is long and controversial. In the early 2000s, he was a hot commodity and a rising star. By 2006, he was banned from NASCAR forever. After an unbelievable comeback in USAC, his racing career came to a tragic ending. Shane went through some of the highest highs and the lowest lows of any race car driver, and remains one of the most polarizing figures in NASCAR’s history.

Buddy of mine Iraces a bit with Shane and says from talking with him that he's come a long way in his recovery from injuries and addiction. He's definitely a winner at life. Prayers for Shane and hope he keeps going strong

@@shaynejenkins446his account is “shane r hmiel” and he is still very active on iracing. i raced with him one time last year. he was just as reckless in iracing as he was in nascar in that race. some 13 year old kid was arguing with him at one point and shane said something along the lines of “i’m fucking paralyzed and i’ll still race better than you.” the kid probably had no clue who he was lol

@@xTakumEx There are tons of opioid addicts that maintain a day job and an active addiction for years without even their close family knowing. Heroin is the same as any other opioid. It isn't any more powerful than morphine. In fact, most prescription opioids like oxymorphone and hydromorphone are far more powerful than heroin.

The amount of HATE Shane used to get and still does get even after being injured is sad and shows a lack of empathy in the world. A 22 year old kid making almost a million a year ruined his life, got it back together and then he was injured. People still write on here and call him a cripple and addict. That doesn’t make you “edgy” it makes you a piece of trash. Just my opinion

addiction really is a disease. the amount of admiration i have for shane is massive, i don’t know half of the pain and struggle he has gone through, but his resilience is inspirational to say the least.

Raising a child with bipolar tested everything my wife and I had. Just getting an accurate diagnosis for our daughter took more than a year, let alone finding the right medication for her. I have a lot of empathy for Shane and it sounds like he has a good support team surrounding him as an adult.

My wife has a sister who is bipolar. It’s hell sometimes for her family and spills over to us sometimes. We live half way across the country from her family and it’s tough, I can only imagine it on a daily basis and having to deal with it as your job of a parent. I have another friend who’s sister is also bipolar as well as her mother and they also self medicate and live in the streets. It’s a tough life and thing to deal with.

Bipolar is harsh, but living with a step parent who had bipolar disorder and a social personality disorder was nothing short of horrible. Keep a good eye on your son or daughter, I lost a friend to BPD...

You are just bad parents. I was told I have adhd and bipolar my whole life. My mom had me taking more drugs than I can count from age 5 up. Literally 20+ pills per day at times. I moved out at a few weeks after my 18th birthday and stopped taking all medications that I had been forced to my whole life. Felt instantly better. Brain fog gone plenty of energy that I thought I didn't have. I'm 25 now and have a house and run my own business. Maybe you shouldn't drug your kids because they act like kids sometimes

I went to that race at Terre Haute where Shane got hurt. I stopped at the Hardee’s right there. When I came out, I heard a big “WHUMP!” When I got to the track they already had him out of the car, but the car was still sitting there with the cage pushed down. He had become a USAC favorite, and we were proud to support his rehabilitation tour. I think he had been invited for an Indycar test the following week.

@@projoebiochem Glad you didn't have to see it. Side note I just left a Toyota dealership where they tried to get me into a 11.9% APR with 800 credit score. I left before the salesmen had time to crack his water bottle open. I too miss the days when shit wasn't sky high.

Im sure there were hours of inspections and questions but when a wreck like that throws a car into a concrete wall cage first, that wall will win almost every time, even with the best cage. Cages protect well for roll overs and are fairly strong but they arent designed to absorb a direct impact cage first into the leading edge of a concrete barrier.

@@BillyRamirez welds were fine. That monster truck wasnt running 50 and being flipped cage first onto the leading edge of a small strong barrier wall like this. This was just a freak accident and if the monster truck took a hit the same way , it would get pretty banged up BUT,,,,its cage is much larger than this little car was so the driver has more room inside of the caged in area.

Pretty sure they could make roll cages to withstand that kinda impact. They probably didn't see it as worth it because they're comparatively light cars and well the series doesn't make nearly as much money as some others. Hopefully they do see it as worth it now. But it wouldn't surprise me if, like in most safety standards in racing (and the world at large), it wouldn't surprise me if they'd wait until the accident list is long and has a few deaths on it.

Can you look at making a video about Kyle Petty's Rockingham wins in the early 90s? Over the course of three wins he nearly lapped the field for each race, and led something like 85% of the laps. It's something no one ever brings up.

My nephew was targetted by dealers when he was a kid living in Germany. His early life was totally ruined by those scumbags. Parents shouldn't be blamed if they miss the signs - its rarely obvious. He is now clean, a father, and building a career. He did jail time, and has suffered sexual abuse. Users are victims. Shane is a survivor, what a momentous life story. One life live it...

Getting addicted to the worst stuff (h&c) was one of the best things that I did. Being on it taught me a lot about how people get treated on it. Getting off of it then made me the person who I am today. Dgs has given me far more than they have taken away. Not for everyone though - you cannot use them as an excuse to be a dirtbag. If you do, you probably won't come back.

This situation was a bit more complicated than it should have been. A misdiagnosis of ADHD from childhood screwed up a good portion of the first part of his life. NASCAR did nothing to help & labeled him as a druggie. At the time, a lot of us bought into that. It wasn't until a few years after the permanent ban that the dark side of NASCAR's substance abuse policy was truly revealed, & especially in regards to the Kevin Grubb tragedy & Jeremy Mayfield controversy. All that plus the truth regarding the actual issue with Hmiel, Bipolar Disorder, has made us wiser regarding mental health & more skeptical towards NASCAR's substance abuse policy today.

@@Suburban-United It is NASCAR's job to see that people do not compete while using substances that could create a safety issue for them or someone else. The WHY is not their problem. As a former racing crew member, I was governed under those policies. It's REAL SIMPLE. If you cannot do your job in racing without using substances on the banned list, then go find something else to do. As someone who was subject to random drug testing, I would consult on even simple over the counter remedies to make sure I was compliant with the rules.

He was given two chances in rehab to get clean and HE blew it. It's a bonus that he never hurt someone while strung out on drugs.

A few things to remember... 1) We're talking about NASCAR. Not gonna be the most progressive when it comes to substances outside of alcohol and tobacco. 2) We're talking about 20 years ago, during which we've come some ways in our views on it as a society. 3) The way it stays in our system, even if inactive, affects the way people view it as well. Hell, there was a point in time when drinking and driving didn't have the same stigma that it does now, and I'd say we still don't treat all cases of intoxication as seriously as we should, but sometimes it do be how it be.

Those two weeks in the coma must have really been hell on him mentally and then dealing with those life changing injuries afterwards i can't imagine. I give him a lot of credit for coming out of it swinging and being so positive. Being in a coma isn't like they portray in the movies. It's a brutal experience mentally, really brutal, I know.

No it's not, yawn. I was in a coma for over 3 months I was taken off life support and woke up. Not very comforting knowing you'r parents were going to let you die. But I came out of it with nothing much worse for wear other than some muscle atrophy lost 45lbs nearly a third of my body weight at the time. I broke my leg about 10 years after that and it was a way worse experience. Layed up for months unable to walk without a cane for over a year. I'd rather be back in another coma best sleep I've had in my life. You all have it too easy

I’m just halfway through the video, but there’s so much nuance in a story like this. Racers can drink as long as they aren’t driving drunk right? Yet im sure dude would’ve tested positive even if he smoked after the race last Sunday. Unless of course a driver can use no substances, and I know pot being illegal in states at the time made a difference, but it’s just more of a shame to think of how criminalized it was and the lives ruined. As for the coke part, well that’s harder to be sympathetic to, he must have been super unlucky or using a lot to still test positive by then. Hopefully the guy got better, I wish him the best

I have ADHD and have used weed since I was 19 with a couple breaks in between. Now that I'm 32 I'm starting to understand its negative effect on me both mentally and physically. I'm about a month sober and it's taken a bit to reprogram my brain to feel stress and anxiety without constantly medicating myself. I can understand some of the struggles he's been through.

Don't listen to the shmoe here that doesn't understand brain chemistry. You're doing great! Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about medications you can take temporarily to manage your ADHD through the transition. ADHD can make anxiety way way worse.

@@warrenmichael918and seatbelts weren't designed to keep drivers brains from slamming into their skulls. But the HANS device was designed to prevent that. Or at least dramatically reduce the chances of it happening. Drivers of F1 and Indy were statistically unlikely to have something slam into their face from the tiny gap in the front of the car but it did happen in "freak accidents" and that's why they now have the halo mounted over the cockpit. The backplate wasn't designed to protect the front of the driver's head. So they designed something to do that. It's not crazy to ask why that roll cage failure happened and what the officials are going to do about it.

When things are made and seem to work right, they are accepted as good enough , until a freak accident happens , then they re examine the design. All i was saying is that the cage was made to be safe for most wrecks but this wreck was a weird circumstance and the limits of the cage were found. Its not like it was made wrong, it just needs to be better now that this has happened.

God bless you Shane! I'm from North Carolina too, not far from you. I've got a friend that lives on Pleasant Garden road. I squashed my spinal cord in two places, and died in my backyard. God spoke to me when I was gone.. He told me to get up, and helped me. I've had such a long road coming back, I can fully empathize with your situation. I know what it felt like to be paralyzed, and I thought it was going to be forever. God had different plans for me though, and I was told to pass my story on.. I admire you for what you've done, and God has other plans for you too. Be safe, and the best your endeavors!

_i hung out with Shane a little bit after high school why he was racing and was their at the bar fight that night some of my family is friends with his mom and dad they have invited me to do some Iracing at his house so hopefully one day I can make it by their with him and draper I was also wild as hell back in Shane's Nascar days,I will never forget the first time he come back from Daytona when we was at the chassis shop he was describing how he was flat footing the gas pedal thru all 4 turns u kno just wide-open with the gas pedal pegged to the floorboard lol and another time when he took out Dale Jarret at Bristol in the Busch series race,I said theirs only a handful of people who can say they spun out Dale Jarret 😂

Just was listening to the Jeremy Mayfield saga on the Dale Jr Download. They were discussing why NASCAR took on such a sudden hardline stance on random testing and Jr said it was because of someone that was driving on track that had tested positive... never mentioned Hmiel directly, but now I realize it was him... Jr is class act and a good friend to Hmiel despite his personal challenges.

It is a darn shame for this young and talented man that made poor choices and decisions in his racing career. I am sad that he sustained serious injuries in his sprint car crash, but very proud and glad that Shane turned his life around!!

A mistake is when you try to get into the wrong car or something like that. Doing drugs is a choice that many people make and regret later.

My son got his autograph at Bristol weeks before he was suspended from NASCAR, it's a shame the sprint car crash he had, he was talented for sure.

The fact he had a wrong diagnosis which then turned out to be bipolar which wasn’t tested correctly even when diagnosed at that time definitely needs to be considered big time here. I’m just glad he’s alive , bless him , addiction is so tough to get out of .

How do you know? Even if he didn't do them immediately before the race he was driving so erratically that they chose to test him, so he could still have been feeling the effects. I don't see how it's not fair.

Unfortunately the garage was filled w many drivers, owners, and crew chiefs who had issues w Shane Hmiel's driving. Who can forget the time Dale Jarrett got out of his Infinity Series car during a red flag at Bristol and walked over to Shane Hmiel's car to give him an earful about disrespectful driving? Now when a HOF driver does that, you know something was amiss w Shane Hmiel. Failing a substance abuse test 3 times gave us our answer. No hypocrisy there.

As someone with adhd smoking weed has the same effects that adhd medication has. He likely had it and when being taken off the meds was self medicating to feel normal again. Very unfortunate

Talented guy that unfortunately grew up to late. To bad he didn’t get the correct psychological care early on. Seeing that roll cage pancake was concerning because I thought it would take that impact a bit better. And this may sound like a joke, but it isn’t…I’d love to see a souped up wheelchair race series on go kart tracks. I know enough wild combat vets in chairs that would probably be game.

Having sat through some NASCAR and open wheel races (Indy Cars / CART), it's good to know the drivers of 3400 pound missiles going 200 mph sometimes five feet from the fans, are being drug tested.

He actually used to follow me on Twitter, and was starting to contemplate about Politics, and other things that wasn't related to racing, and in my opinion, it was somewhat inappropriate. He eventually suspended his account. It was a shame with what had he went through, and he would've made a name for himself with some of NASCAR's biggest stars, hadn't he made the choices he mad nearly 20 years ago.

I am happy that he is going strong. I myself was addicted to pills and cocain. The denial part he mentioned is what will really destroy you. Once you addmit you have a problem is when you can get help. If anyone reading this post knows someone with an addiction please don't kick them to the curb. Because with help they can recover. I have been clean since 1992. Their is always hope.

Let me change my question a little, I have a medical card…it’s not a medical prescription…..so, they allow CBD=3chi because there’s only 0.3% thc roughly (which is crappy shit is probably the next K2 it still gets you high) but you can drink alcohol that’s so stupid

For a sport built by bootleggers , and in spite of the amount of gigglebush I smell burning in the infield every time i go to a race. Nascar sure does freak out about a little grass. Seen many drivers at the track with a beer in hand, over the years. Never saw Dick Trickle without one, though he wasnt a fast drinker in his defense.
