Actually there's a word in Austria ''Gaudi'' which I can't really translate into English, but craic would be a good equivalent in Irish. I've lived in both Austria and Ireland (I'm English) and honestly they do have a bit in common. Catholic provincial-minded folk (except in Dublin/Vienna) from a small country who like their folklore and getting drunk. Also much of Austria was originally populated by Celts.

The British school armoury is real. Starting in 1906, lots of (mostly posh) schools operate a training program for future officers, complete with weapons training. It's currently called the Combined Cadet Force. In the modern day this leads to the very funny situation that British Olympic marksmen have to train in France because it's illegal for them to own handguns, but there are dozens if not hundreds of high school teachers with access to cratefuls of AR-15s

Seriously, thank you for making this video. How did I not know about that? The worst people my country ever spat out and made a bunch of films about how cool Ireland is (which may be the only thing they've ever said I agree on) and it even backfired in a totally foreseeable way that only autocrats can. will, and still do pull off? I studied that time period for so many years now, with a special interest in what you called "the goebbleverse" (historians should adopt this), because Propaganda for some reason doesn't change all that much and having seen the Nazi films makes it rather easy to spot the baddys in today's world and it's good to see more examples where it backfires like that, without having to watch Putin speeches or Trump interviews.

During WW2 there were factions of the IRA, anti-British Welsh nationalists and anti-Brititish Scottish nationalists who sided with Germany because they believed thier groups and Germany had a common enemy which of course was the British Empire. They probally didn't realize Hitler wanted to make back door deals with these groups and English men who were still apeasers. He promised the British apeasers if they presured their parliament to sign an armistice with Nazi Germany they would come out of the war with the United Kingdom and most of the British Empire intact while promising the IRA, Welsh and Scottish nationalists support in thier struggles to breakaway from British rule. He played all four of these groups like fiddles. And why I am on the subject of music. What was up with that dance? I went to an Irish pub across the street from my apartment twenty years ago and never saw dancing like that. It seems the Irish just can't catch a break when non-Irish make movies about them. Even when Nazi Germany was backing the IRA they still managed to make the Irish look silly.

No Welsh nationalists cooperated or were even sympathetic to the Nazis. This is an old trope pushed around by some unionists. The Welsh nationalist movement, and Plaid Cymru, was formed after WW1 very much in reaction to the imperialist waste. Some leading nationalists refused to fight, but that was from a pacifist point of view (which I disagree with) but was very strong among many Christians in the party.

@@SionTJobbins Very interesting. My apologies if you are Welsh. Some of my ancestors were Welsh. I know throughout history thier were Welsh , Irish and Scottish regiments in Great Britain's Royal Army. But didn't know the Welsh who wanted independence were more political than militant. I do know even most IRA factions who assisted Germany during WW2 didn't really have issues with Jews or really have Nazi or Fascist views They just saw the idea of banding together with Germany as a means to an end. I saw a video about Scotland during WW2. According to that video the Scotts were split up into three groups. Those who remained loyal to the U.K. but maintained their ethnic identities mostly by serving in Highlands Regiments. Groups that wanted to use the war as a chance to breakaway from the U.K. and those who wanted to stay in the U.K but preferred to follow B.U.F.'s policy of appeasement. According to this Video both the anti British Scottish nationalists and pro Fascist appeasers were equally anti-.Semitic. please tell me how much this was true if You know anything about Scotland during that era

@@emerycandy326 the planned German invasion of Ireland was called ‘ operation Kathleen’ , German military intelligence said that their Ira allies were more interested in drinking, and singing songs, than dying for Ireland.

You are the first historian to correctly realise that reason for the lack of support for Germany in the 1930s was their love of Mettwurst (raw minced pork spread on bread). We in the UK were able to tolerate the sour beef and tepid Bavarian white sausages, but Mettwurst is a crime against humanity.

I was once lectured by a belgian woman in a hostel in NZ about how awful it was that Ireland was neutral. After that I told her all about a book I read about Belgian atrocities in the Congo. Moral of the story... Don't talk to Belgians. Also: Where has this channel been all my life. Love it.

The Royal School Armagh had an armoury and there was an armed rebellion by the pupils. This was nothing to do with British / Irish but because a daily beer allowance had been stopped by the then headmaster. The Militia were called out and a stand off lasted several days. Perhaps Goebbels had heard sbout this incident ?
