I have to leave this comment because some of y'all clearly didn't watch the video. 1. I do not care that the Pistons lost the lottery again. For one they do not deserve it based on how poorly Tom Gores runs the team and secondly the draft class is supposed to be fairly weak this year anyway. And even if it wasn't, they are run so badly that even that doesn't affect my opinion. They suck and deserve to be screwed for bad management. 2. I am well aware of the fact that it is a matter of pure statistics. My problem is that we simply should not be leaving the draft order to random chance. That's a stupid system. And if we going to leave to random chance, we definitely should not be inclduing teams that were playing meaningful basketball in the post season. If we aren't even willing to limit the lottery to just teams that missed the playoffs (which even then is still stupid but at least makes some sense) then we might as well just make the entire draft order a lottery up to and including the championship winning team. 3. The reason the lottery does not work is because it's expressed purpose is to prevent tanking. It does not prevent tanking, it has rewarded tanking on multiple occasions (spurs last year, the process sixers), and ironically, it has screwed the teams that are actuallly just that bad and aren't intentionally trying to lose (the wizards, the hornets, the Pistons, etc). 4. Go back and watch the video again if you still think I am upset about the lottery because my team didn't win it. And if you do, I can't help you

1. Agreed. 2. You're wrong, it's not a stupid system. 3. You're wrong again, as while it might not be preventing tanking from continuing to occur it is preventing tanking from WORKING as well as it did under the old system. 4. I didn't watch the video because you appear to be 12 years old, and I doubt anyone your age can tell us old folks anything we didn't already know.

Exactly Pistons need to focus on player development. Feel like the Pistons is focused on winning basketball games which they clearly cant and not putting their attention in developing the players they have. If one of these players make a mistake the coach just bench them like the Pistons is actually competiting for a champtionship. If this is what this Pistons organization focus is on i dont know what to say no top picks is going to save this franchise until they change their approach.

@@BSSportsPodcast It actually prevents tanking a bit, but you can't eliminate it completly and lottery isn't there to delete tanking, its actually is made for those being lower 5-15 teams. Some teams are gonna be just bottom teams and nothing you can do about it What's more, being the worst team guarantee you at least 5th pick. What people do not understand is that current system is better for any team playing for at least 10th seed to play play-in.. even if they lose they still got some nice pick with like 10-15% to have it landed 1-4 spots. Everybody laughing at pistons, but they aint know math, worst record team got the biggest chance for 5th pick which is like 40-45% chance. The average outcome when you are the worst team is around 3.75 pick.

It works. The only flaw about the lottery is that it's done behind closed doors. You often wonder if there is an agenda going behind closed doors. 85, Ewing. 03, Lebron. 2011, Cleveland gets #1. Things like that are really super fishy. Overall, the setup is correct. The execution - in keeping the lottery behind closed doors - is my only complaint about the NBA lottery.

What do you think of at least the NHL model? I want to say in the NHL the worst team can't move out of the top 3, and then obviously any team that made the playoffs doesn't get a shot (no play in for the NHL obviously)

They need to create an alternate post season tournament to determine the draft. All non playoff teams, single elimination. One city hosts the entire tournament. Winner takes #1, runner up #2. Semi-finalists coin flip for #3&4. Etc, etc.

I don't know that that is a great idea. My fear is basically having it be a game/tournament you risk the number 1 pick being decided by a bad call by the refs. I think if we choose to do a lottery, which I don't want to do, is that you have ethe bottom three teams thrown into a hat and pick out the order from that. No reason play in teams should be able to get a chance at the number 1 pick. Easiest and simplest solution is to just get rid of the whole thing but that won't happen because it's a tv show and they aren't going to stop getting free money

@JackMovess that's the point. That's why the nba has a tankathon race to the bottom plaguing it's schedule like cancer. Then they stick the best young players on those crappiest cancer teams. I'd rather the best non playoff teams get better. Let the cancer teams work their turn arounds in the free agent, trade, and later lottery range.

...the only thing that needs fixing...is the play in...there's no way a team with the 9th and 10th seed should be fighting for a spot to be the 8th seed if they can beat the 8th seed who might be 3 games better than the 9th seed or 5 game's better than the 10th seed...now that's not fair for the 7-8th seeds...but the lottery is not broken...the Pistons are the ones that are broken... it's ok to tank for a year...but to tank for 5-10 years left it yet Pistons that's just bad karma..m

No one is saying the Pistons front office isn't terrible. I have been saying that since last year. The lottery is there to stop tanking that's what we are sold on. It simply does not and the fact that you can be a team who is both a play in team and also potentially get the first overall pick versus a team like the wizards, the Pistons, or the hornets. I don't care that the Pistons didn't get the first pick, I have given up on them and I even laughed when it happened. The fact is this whole deciding the draft order by a lottery is a stupid idea that is entirely designed for tv ratings and drama. If you had the draft order determined by the standings like the NFL then you would still require teams to be competant in their drafting, development, scouting, etc. You would just eliminate this arbitrary difficulty in having to rely essentially on the luck of the draw to determine what your draft strategy should be the moment the season ends. And if teams decide they are going to tank to get a low pick that's what they're already doing with the lottery so we might as well just make it a lot clearer

Sixers fan. During the process era Hinkie legit wanted to loop hole the NBA system by in theory getting the top pick every year so we can in theory have an all star squad by like year 5 but the nba needs to fix the new system doesn’t work. Maybe make it random except for like top 5 worst teams

Right and lucky for the sixers they actually won the lottery a few times, could you imagine if they didn't win it at all? The guy the was run out of town and he won the lottery lol. But as far your suggestion, I've never heard that you randomize all except the bottom 5, I suppose that could be kind of interesting. Although I just don't see why we see even randomizing to begin with, but at least you're offering something different, appreciate the comment

I like the lottery system, but now that they have the playin tourney I think those teams should only be able to jump up to #5 or #6. The NBA can't stop tanking and not all teams that end up with the worst record had designs to tank for the number one pick... ...the Rockets were trying to build around Harden and Westbrook when after the season started Westbrook and then Harden forced trades... Thus they went from a 50 win team to the worst record, because they were FORCED into a total rebuild. Now in 3 seasons they are a 41 win team...but I must point out that the Rockets cleared out all those big contracts and signed quality free agents to get to 41 wins. Every team that becomes a bottom feeder does it for their own reasons and the NBA CAN"T STOP it, but the lottery system should be there to make it more fair at the bottom.

I'd be willing to say a lottery in which the bottom three teams are in a lottery for their order. If I could just have no lottery I'd want that but if they insist on the lottery it sikply should not include teams in the play in

@@BSSportsPodcast I don't agree on a bottom 3 team order. That will encourage losing and many NBA games will be jokes as more than 3 teams will seek the worst records. The purpose of the lottery is to discourage this from happening and it is working. But a playin team like Atlanta should not get a top pick.

I don't see how it is stopping teams from tanking. Just last year we had the Mavs give up on their season and chance to make the play in simply for a 1% chance to get Victor. Further, if a team does choose to do that, that's on that franchise. Everyone knows there is no guarantee of it working out anyway so if they want choose to run their franchise that way then they should have to deal with any natural consequences of that. If a team wants to tank for a good draft pick, they will do it regardless of lottery or no lottery.

Well now since theres play-in, imo those teams should be excluded from the lottery as well..boost the odds of the bottom 6 teams and the other 4 teams left have very low chances...i mean they created the play-in to give chance to trams to go to playoffs but still good chance of winning the #1!?

...of course it works...you can't keep tanking year after year and expect a reward...the Pistons have a ok team to be much better than there record show's...three years in a row with the 5th pick plus cade... it's not the lottery that needs changing it's the Pistons front office for picking the wrong players or the coaches for not developing the players the right way...but the lottery works fine...

The pistons falling from 1 to 5 twice in a row is proof that the lottery concept works. I just wish they would be more transparent about the drawing so people knew for sure that it wasn’t rigged.

I laughed at the Pistons when they dropped this past draft so not really salty. Regardless, yeah in a Pistons fan I'm not going to hide that and sure it affects how I think about it. But my opinion is that it is dumb to decide the draft order by a lottery. Has nothing to do with the Pistons, the ownership clearly doesn't care about them so why should I. Wouldn't proof of the lottery concept working be that teams with the best odds win most of the time? I mean you said it yourself they aren't very transparent about the drawing but even if they were to me that wouldn't solve the problem. Deciding draft order this way is just a big gimmick meant to draw in tv ratings and media coverage, cause God knows they can't draw in media interest with most of the draft classes lol

@@BSSportsPodcast not even. It keeps teams from tanking which is so important. Without it a team might go “we’re 10-30 let’s spend the next 40 games actively trying to lose” and that would make the regular season completely meaningless. Conversely, it’s better for team development to be competitive. If playing .500 ball in the last 20 games of the season minimally impacts your draft odds, then you can really push your younger guys to show what they could potentially contribute to a winning squad moving forward. I’m a wizards fan so I feel your pain 😂. It sucks that we always suck and haven’t had a high draft pick in a decade only to finally get one in a terrible draft…

I do not care that the Pistons lost the lottery, I think I have made that quite clear in all of my commentary about this past lottery. My problem is we simply should not be determining the draft order by a hunger games random draw system. It's supposed to prevent teams from tanking, it doesn't. That is my entire point. Imagine instead of doing seeding in the playoffs by the standings, they did it by lottery. Everyone would think that it's ridiculous. But when we do for draft order we just go along because idk we like the drama.

@puppychow1000 if the worst teams don't deserve it then the best teams shouldn't deserve the first seed in the playoffs, home field advantage, etc. But nobody would take seriously the prospect of determining seeding by lottery because it's just a dumb idea lol The process sixers literally fired their gm because all he was doing was tanking so clearly it didn't stop them from tanking, and it didn't stop the Mavs last year from deciding to lose and miss the play in order to get 1 percent chance to get victor. And if the worst teams don't deserve the highest picks, why not include every team in the lottery? It's not anymore ridiculous to me that you have 15 teams in the lottery than to have all 30 The only objective way to determine this is by doing it by the standings in my opinion. If you insist on needing a lottery than surely we should limit to let's just say only teams that missed the playoff and now the play in? Or even teams that are the bottom 5 in the standings

@@BSSportsPodcast so then you’re for tanking by your last paragraph (didn’t know I was reading a book) Your point about the mavs, yes, purposely losing a game for BETTER ODDS is different than straight up tanking like the pistons and spurs. Your point about the sixers.. it was a different draft process before 2017, so tanking made more sense, even though it clearly gets you nowhere. Clearly the NBA doesn’t agree with you on your last point, you’re salty bad teams don’t get the best player.. do what philli did and fire the staff and actually get better 🤡
