No one was worried about there being too many superstars. Between Bird, Magic, and Jordan you have three of the most competitive "only wins matter" guys in the history of the NBA, all of whom were as happy to make those around them better as they were for their own stats. With those guys leading, there was never a doubt.

To answer one question you had, nobody had any doubts that this team was going to dominate. They were just going to have a lot of fun playing together other instead of against each other. This is the greatest lineup ever assembled. I have no doubt that they would beat any other American Olympic basketball team ever put together, including the 2008 team that you mentioned

It was basically "The Justice League" or "The Avengers" assembling to defeat the whole world and return order. I turned 13 that summer in June so this event was like everyone's summer waiting for the Olympics. NBC did a great job of building up the drama of the Olympics throughout the year. Along with The Dream Team, Track and Field was huge, Women's basketball was dope but obviously they didn't get the coverage of their male counterparts and were just as dominant, Figure skating, Men's and Women's Gymnastics and more. Since the games come around every four years, you'd only hear about certain athletes when it was either meets in their sport overseas or when Olympic trials and stuff started. It was cool to witness international athletes as well as your own men and women that you get to know "reappear" after 4 years. To me, 92 was the last great Olympic Games. And with the Men's Basketball, you knew you were watching something special and can't miss. "The Dream Team" documentary is a must watch if you're interested.

As someone who lived through both, I compare the Dream Team's collaboration of superstars to the collaboration of musicians who did the "We Are The World" song. Both were momentous events that will never be duplicated, at least not at that level. Happy to have witnessed both.

I was a senior in college - my last semester. We skipped class to watch the games. There will never be a team like the Dream Team. Although I believe Larry is the Goat, their friendship is real, and it also was with their teammates in the NBA. Unless they were traded, which was out of their hands, they played for the same team their entire career. They were loyal to their team, which doesn't happen today. They didn't bounce from team to team to get a ring, or our Sir Charles would have many. He was the highest scorer of the Olympics and definitely, as you saw, was not missing the Olympic experience. Still love him to this day! You asked if players today have these same true relationships with their own teammates. Simply, the answer is no. They aren't loyal to their team but only looking out for themselves. In the 80s and even the 90s, there will be no one with the popularity of Magic and MJ. Larry had it, but hid from it. He's shy, unlike the rest of the team. There will NEVER be a team like the Dream Team. They respected each other and didn't bring any egos to the USA Team - they all represented the USA and not themselves. That never happened again and never will.

It wasn’t a question of too many superstars because the reason they were chosen and not the college players was because the US got beat twice in a row. The name DREAM TEAM came from the compilation of the best of the best in the NBA. The Pistons head coach Chuck Daly basically told them to check their egos at the door and bring back the Gold to America. That was what they were there to do represent the country bring back the Gold. It was at this time that Jordan became a global star that everyone wanted to see play. Him and Pippin had just finished winning their second ring. Jordan was doing commercials for Wheaties, Hanes, McDonalds and Sprite. The “ I want to be like Mike” slogan was the catchy phrase and Nike had his face plastered everywhere and too was about to become global. The European countries started buying American NBA TV time. After the 1992 Olympic win, hypocrite Karl Malone starts griping that Magic having HIV was something he was in fear of but mind you he played all summer with the man. The League after the 1993 all star game made Magic resign/retire because of fake ass Malone.

When this team was first announced, the thought that there were too many "Superstars" never crossed my mind. My initial thoughts were, the beatdowns they were about to dish out, and Toni Kukoc. Actually, 30 years later, it still hadn't crossed my mind...until you mentioned it.

I don't think egos were as big as they are now. I mean, of course they all looked at themselves as "the best" or whatever, but these athletes today literally cannot share the spotlight without their feelings getting hurt. The Dream Team players were about the team. You have to remember, that was still a time when you were a franchise player and the idea of jumping teams in pursuit of a bigger paycheck was quite foreign. Today's players have no loyalty except to themselves and I think sports in general are worse for it. JMO

This was a huge impact on the world Usually the big thing at the olympics is the 100m and the long jump but not that year Here in Scotland i was a fan of american football because we had a weekly show from the states that showed a game but basketball was never a thing until this olympics, then you saw everyone wanting hoops and balls for the back yards etc to now there are hoops/courts in almost every park and teams and leagues that lead to the pros all that came from the greatest team of athletes ever assembled in the history of team sports (the Redeem team wasn't even close) The Dream Team

Fun Facts: The members of the Dream Team combined for 23 NBA championship rings. The Dream Team roster combined for 15 NBA MVP awards. When the NBA at 50 released its top 50 players of all time in 2017, a total of 10 members of the Dream Team made that list. The only players that were not on the top 50 were Chris Mullin and Christian Laettner. The 12 players on the Dream Team combined for 117 NBA All-Star Game appearances. Jordan and Malone led the way with 14 appearances each over their entire careers. Eight of the top 50 NBA scorers of all time played on the Dream Team. That list includes Karl Malone (36,928), Jordan (32,292), Patrick Ewing (24,815), Charles Barkley (23,757), Clyde Drexler (22,195), Larry Bird (21,791), David Robinson (20,790) and John Stockton (19,711). 👀👀

Crazy thing Larry Bird had back issues the whole time, Magic was kinda 1 year out of shape, Jordan wasn't really going 101% all out in the games except against Croatia, and they didn't take a single time out I looked it no time out at all and their main message to the world was to beat them with fundamentals not bully them

What's crazy is that this team lost to college players when Jordan rode the pine most of the game. You had Jordan and Pippen coming off back to back championships and you add John Stockton to the mix... that's like 3 of the top 5 steal leaders in the NBA at that time. The olympics were sponsored by Reebok at the time, so all warm ups were Reebok warm ups. I love how Jordan and other Nike players used the flag to cover the Reebok symbol on the warm ups.

The real debate was if the nba players should even be able to play, everyone knew they would destroy every team in the Olympics if they did. Got to see them live, it was like watching an even better version of thr harlem globtrotters vs the washington generals. These dudes just went out and toyed with the world and made basketball a global sport. The nba having so many foreign stars is bc of this team. The reason the usa dream teams have lost is bc this team created a love for the sport overseas that to that point was never known.
