Күн бұрынAn English passenger named Charles Sansom on board the Ercolano gave the following statement to the Newspaper the Parlamento of Turin: “After having supped with Sir Robert Peel, I went on deck to smoke a cigar. The night was very dark, and the sea exceedingly rough. I was walking backwards and forwards, and was astonished at not seeing anyone at the helm. The captain was in his cabin. I perceived a light at a certain distance, and I informed the helmsman, who made no reply. I repeated my warning with uneasiness, because it appeared to me that the light was coming towards us.”

Shipwreck Archive lady is an absolute library of all the least known shipwrecks and detailed information of the disasters.

We keep saying that if we keep this going someday we should collect at least some of these stories into a book. To say that the shipwreck archives lady likes telling people about shipwrecks is an understatement.

@theshipwreckarchive we had a map store in my town that had the gigantic one huge sheet maps-- they would just blow your mind to see, and be in a store full of them. I hope this don't sound weird much, but it smelled so good, all the nautical charts, and USGS maps, and detailed political maps. 😌, I swear, you walked in, and felt 20 points higher on that I.Q. scale. Miss them times. Peace!

I’d had to read a fair amount about Sir Robert Peel in college for a criminal justice minor and was wracking my brain to figure out how I could have missed the fact that he was in a shipwreck. I really should have looked at the date on the screen first…

When we first started researching this one we had the same problem before we also remembered our dates. Multi generational family names sometimes complicate research a little.

We’ll never know of course but was the sailor at the helm being prideful and didn’t want to listen to the passenger or did he simply not hear the warning. Either way the sailors should have seen the danger and acted accordingly. Negligence is the perfect word for this incident.

I suspect the passengers of both ships would have gladly traded both captains for a plug nickel. They definitely weren't worth a dime.
