4 ай бұрынThe Nehru Trophy boat race is an annual sporting event that takes place in the backwaters of the southern Indian state of Kerala in the district of Alappuzha. Established in 1953 by India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, it is a unique spectacle with Olympic-level precision and performance. Each boat has around 100 players, who bring down their oars in unison at exhilarating speeds.
We explore the sport with members of the United Boat Club (UBC-Kainakary).

@@navalfa7291 There are around 2 dozen, boat races in Kerala, so changing the name of one particular race into "Kerala Trophy" is not a good Idea. Also why the same is called Nehru Trophy is because, in the post independence Jawaharlal Nehru donated a Silver Cup and in respect of Nehru people renamed it to "Nehru Trophy". You can just consider it as a matter of respect to one of our freedom fighters and our first PM.

@@vaibhav_27 Come to Alappuzha town in Kerala on August 10th. The race is in the backwater named Punnamada very near to the Alappuzha town. Come early to get a good seat in the pavilion.

As a North Indian Rajasthani whose mother is from Kottayam Kerala (Just 10 km from Kumarakom) , i saw not the real race but the rehearsals they were doing few days before the main event in the backwaters of Kumarakom and i just loved it...... The crowd gathered to see the rehearsal, the honking of those 🎷 instruments, the rehersal race and the really longggg, extremelyyyy beauuuutiful boats🤩.... Wow what an amazing environment it is...... I love love looovvvvvvveeee Kerala a lotttttt ...... I might be a Rajasthani but my heart and stomach is definitely a malayali ..... I love kerala food more then my own state's food😅😅....

I love my our kerala brothers and sisters. I am tamilan grew up in coimbatore, just this new year I visited kochi. Kerala is still in modern times as vibrant as always have been like ancient times. Kerala is one of the precious pearl of Dravadian culture.

The history associated with Vallam Kali dates back to the 13th Century of war when one of the kings of the feudal kingdoms commissioned the construction of a war boat. The boat was called Chundan Vallam or snake boat .The methods of creating the boat thus trace back to 13th Century. Out of all the vessels made since then, the Parthasarathi Chundan is the oldest. This is a festival with its roots in age-old local Onam festival but is celebrated even today with unparalleled zeal. Perhaps it’s this passion among the people that attracts tourists in huge numbers from around the world. the heritage of the Onam festival makes it an unmissable event. There are many boat races held in Kerala. Among them are the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Punnamada Lake of Alappuzha and the Aranmula Snake Boat Race(,Kollam boat racestarted recently) Both these races have decades-old history and reasons for the celebrations. It is a once-a-year festival and happens around Onam. The exact date is according to the Malayalam calendar and is subject to change. However, it’s mainly held in August and September.Boat race is a pride of Kerala ,all Malayalis participate these events.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on the Punnamda Lake, near Alappuzha, held on the second Saturday of August every year, is the most competitive and popular of the boat races. On the day of this fiercely fought boat race, the tranquil lake front is transformed into a sea of humanity with an estimated two lakh people, including tourists from abroad, coming to watch the event. For the people of each village in Kuttanad, a victory at this race for their village boat is something to be celebrated for months to come. The major attraction of the boat race is the competition of snake boats chundanvallams or snake boats.Chundans (snake boats) are an impressive sight, measuring over 100 feet in length, with a raised prow. They were called snake boats by the former colonial rulers, who based the name on a native boat found in Norway,although Kerala's Chundans bear little resemblance to their European namesakes

They don’t eat beef , some of them eat meat chicken mutton egg etc. so doesn’t mean they aren’t healthy🤣 Don’t try to be Zakir Naik’s fan here . I just appreciate muscular are selected as boat racers. Other states also consume beef but they don’t shout or show it to insult someone’s religious beliefs. They eat & keep calm. Apart from that I’m very liberal about food choices.
