The Neon Demon starring Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Christina Hendricks and Keanu Reeves is a horrific look at the price of perfect beauty. I'll be explaining the wild ending, and looking at some of the hidden symbols that add an important extra layer to the movie.

Move to South Florida is a death sentence to non-residence and locals. Of all places to be... why here? Nothing good here. It is a place of the sick, dying and the dead (literally). If I knew of this as a child, I would've gone into the funeral services as a first and only career path and never gone into education, but I love the academics.

Seriously. I think a lot of people missed the point, which wasn't that Jesse was necessarily the most beautiful girl in the world, but she was the newest, freshest and very innocent and naive. That's what made her appealing to the industry. Not to say that Elle isn't very pretty, but it was that aspect of her that made her the hot new thing: her age and her naivety. The modeling agent even mentions how young she is. While it's made very clear that Gigi and Sarah have been around a while, and Sarah is jaded and Gigi has had surgery. Compared to Jesse, they're "old news". Not necessarily uglier but by industry standards, they're tossed aside when some pretty wide-eyed fresh face comes into town. So it stinks to read all of the "the other models were way prettier" and "Jesse isn't even pretty" comments because it definitely wasn't a movie that was saying which one of these women is the prettiest but rather examining industry standards.

It does say something that multiple movies have cast her as "Perfection". Clearly this is what Hollywood deems as a ultimate beauty. Since she's constantly gets those roles. To regular people like us she kinda average looking, However the industry disagree. it interesting to see how different class structure sees beauty. Personally I think Kat Dennings is beautiful but Hollywood thinks she chubby, While Elle the beauty

The movie is clearly about a witches coven. The character, “ Ruby”, is covered in tattooed symbolic runes , she bathed in the blood of a virgin in order to stay youthful. Ruby.also is exceptionally vague about how long she has been a that house and who the owners are. The opening scene starts with a transformation ritual at the party. The great thing about the movie is that it was well written and not obvious to most. American viewers need witches to be riding on a broom stick and casting spells with lasers shooting out of the protagonist’s eyes, in order to realize the movie was about witches.

I personally disagree with the thought that they had planned to kill her from the beginning. In another analysis I watched they mentioned that each woman has a point where they begin to hate Jesse more than they already dislike her. For Sarah it's when Jesse beats her at the audition, for Gigi it's when the fashion designer flat out says Jesse is more beautiful than her, and for Ruby it's of course when Jesse rejects her. We can also tell this because earlier in the movie when the women are talking about how women are more likely to buy cosmetics if they're named after food or sex, Ruby asks Jesse "So are you food, or sex?" Since Jesse rejected having sex with Ruby, she ended up as food. That's just personally what I thought

The whole fragment with “food or sex” was a veiled ( and semi veiled btw, when Sarah translate that for Jessie and all of you: Who’s you fucking with?) question about her virginity. Their not interested in beautiful “woman” with a powerful patron, who’s may help that girl break into the industry (“how high she can jump? higher than me?”) they wanted a MAIDEN to succeed their ritual. (“But you’re sleep with a man right? Have you ever slept with a man?”)

Truth be told, anyone that is plotting against you, is more than likely capable of killing you, as what normal person plots against another that is either innocent in nature as well as has not done anything to them that's negative. You can see that the make up artist was obsessing over Jessy as she was basically trying to force her presence in the private shoot that the photographer wanted with Jessy, when he obviously made it clear for her to leave. It's like as though she claimed her and believed that what she did in her mind, some how came to fruition and she owned this young girl. One of the reasons why she was asking about her family, etc. As her situation and the fact that she "didn't have anyone" (something that most predators would rather........in order for them to have their way) Being able to watch gave her control as to how she would move forward, but the fact that she was denied access, just made her more crazy! Which is why she went ape shit crazy when she found out that Jessy was a virgin. As that indicated what and how she really felt inside............and instead of her just stepping back and giving the girl her space to trust her (something I really shouldn't be saying, but who cares, as these types lack self control) she went into that uncontrollable state that enraged her to the point that she wanted to kill her, solely because she couldn't have her way! Something individuals that plot and plan tend to like to do because for some reason in their head, they're gods gift to ?!?!?!?!?!? themselves maybe eh.

@pahzplace7853

It didn't appear to me in that manner either, but as the movie went on it was obvious that there was more to it than meets the entertaining aspect of it. As a story teller can say nothing at all, but the hints and themes said more than just jealousy and cat fights. I think being that Jessy was so young, naive and basically abandoned by her parents.........which basically forced her to run away to dream of becoming something she was so clueless about. Her ambitions revealed how an outsider can get caught up in that which they're unfamiliar with and be unaware of all that's really going on behind the scenes. I'm not even too sure if she was aware of all the coincidences that were taking place. As well as what she really should have done once someone she should have been able to trust tried to defile her. Instead of giving some silly speech about her mother saying she was dangerous, she should have left and went to her friend that was truly a friend to her. As his help didn't consist of her giving in order to get help in return. Behavior that just spells g.e.t. a.w.a.y. from whomever is doing the opposite of who they try to appear to be.

But you can't ignore the ritualistic setup and execution of Jesse, not to mention Ruby has a bunch of occult style tattoos on her body which for some reason they felt like sharing in the scene after Jesse dies. Not to mention all the symbology is there, the movie works on several levels metaphorical for how cutthroat the industry is, a horror movie about the potentially truly dark side of some people whether they are actual witches or not, and of course the price of fame

A very interesting take, though I personally thought of it as less a literal witch movie, and more a movie heavy on the theme of the corruptible nature of the industry and the self-defeat of prizing beauty above all else. That they didn't actually literally murder and consume Jessie, but simply helped to murder the innocent, true beauty that they initially valued via their machinations, to the point that Jessie's value actually became less within the industry (which was why they were eventually able to push her out and take her place in the coveted shoots, etc.) I thought that Sarah (come the end when she eats the eye) looked absolutely miserable (her own eyes filled with tears) while doing it, symbolic of her knowing (deep down inside) that the same fate awaited her, no matter her efforts. In any case, excellent analysis. Really enjoyed it!

ian lee I personally think it was a reference to Dante's Inferno. The (mountain) lion represents malice. That could be about the evil intentions of the witches as well as the owner of the motel who wants to rape her. We can also find the figure of the leopard (representation of fraud) and the wolf (incontinence) in the house of Ruby. This makes sense with everything happening.

4:38 TRIANGLES -- THEY'RE EVERYWHERE One thing you're missing is that they appear upside down, and rightside up. One key scene shows the upside down triangle which can be representational of FEMALE/FEMININE, whereas rightside up is MALE/MASCULINE. One pivotal scene first shows us the upside down triangle, the feminine. And then the rightside up triangle is shown, the masculine, and right after that triangle was shown, Gigi tells Jesse that she looks "masculine." (When Gigi finds out that Jesse is going to be in the show). We then get a UNION of both upside down and rightside up triangles to form a DIAMOND. A whole. In the scene I timemarked, you have three upside down triangles surrounding a rightside up triangle. I think it is fair to say the three inverted triangles represent the three women, but it's also representational of Hekate Trimorphis, the Three Gorgons, the Three Fates / The Three Witches (Macbeth) and even Shakti / Parvati / Kali ----- as Ruby is THE MOTHER, matriarch of the three and seemingly gives birth to something beneath the full moon. It's a great movie. Visually stunning no doubt, but its symbolism works with its commentary about the modelling industry/Los Angeles. It's like a prettier but less surreal Mulholland Drive, but it's effective in suggesting where horror can be found.

Maybe a way to tell us Jesse is killing her from the other side ? Ofc among the object laying next to the scissors I can't help also noticing the measuring band reading "33", next to this pyramid seat and that eye^^...

I disagree with one aspect - that Jesse was singled out as a sacrifice from the git go. This just doesn't mesh with the genuine feelings the head witch (the red head, forgot her name) had along and the surprise the other two girls feel everytime Jesse shows up and out does them. I believe the head witch was looking to recruit Jesse though her friends never liked her. Once Jesse hurt her as well, only then did they decide that she wuld be used for sacrafice
@theaterhobo
@theaterhobo 7 жыл бұрын
The only reason I wouldn't believe that is based off their first encounter. From the very first time they met, the Ruby was staring at the back of Jesse's head like she wanted to chew her face off right then and there. The girls always smiled in Jesse's face, but if you look at it again, every time Jesse looks away Ruby's expression goes dark. It's really subtle and I think that's why it was so creepy.

Sorry dear, but the make up artist was never and could never have be seen as genuine.. I think you've confused the pretense that you witnessed/saw, as genuine. Her pattern, tactics and antics was so obvious and lame. Exactly why she went behind Jessies back and told the girls about her not having family or whatever she told them, which is why Gigi threw it in her face when she upset her without even trying or meaning to. Honey, when you're recruiting/trying to recruit someone that you like, you don't treat them like shit! Plus her behavior was solely about control. As none of them knew that she would have became that popular and would be liked without her making much effort to be liked. Which is exactly why they asked her who is she fucking. As that is how they achieved their success, so they naturally believed that she was doing the same thing. They only became interested in her (as in plotting her demise) the minute they saw how others were attracted to her, which in so many words confirmed that she was beautiful, as she was ending shows and doing a whole bunch of stuff they wanted to do. Which brings me back to what I said initially. There are those that have eyes and still cannot see, but once those that can see (compliments of their life and evolution) are either mesmerized or taken away with whatever thing or person show interest...............it is only then that those who cannot see will show "interest", in ways that cater to their ego vs true interest. As someone doesn't need to be prompted or guided to have an interest in something or someone...............usually when they do, their interest is shallow, basically fake (for self serving reasons)

Very well explained, and a nice theory! But I thought about the movie, more in a realistic take. For example: for me the neon demon is a synonym for the whole industry itself, and Gigi, Sarah and Ruby just represent it. It could also stand for the whole city LA itself. Everywhere are dangers: the model industry, Hank the rapist or the wildcat in Jesses room. The symbolism works also a little bit different for me: In the first conversation that Jesse has with Ruby, gigi and sarah, one of them is mentioning the lipstick choice. "sex or food" are her words. Then they ask Jesse if her lipstick name would sound like food, or sex. Thats a important choice even if its sounds so banal. Ruby wants to have sex with Jesse, but J. doesnt want to. So she ends up as food for the three models. It was her choice. By the way, the colour blue has a deeper meaning in the greek culture. It was a sign for narcism, and red one for violence or anger. So thats the reason why these two colours are used so heavenly in the movie. An the last fact: Jesse is a reference to Jezebiel, a figure from the bible who was thrown down a pit to the lions. So her name and the opening scene, are both indications for Jesse's coming death in the movie. For people who like these type of metaphoric movies (like me) the Neon Demon was a treat. Also Refns visual style is just gorgeous! I am looking forward to his producing work for the Maniac Cop-remake.

when sara eats the eye gigi vomits, she does not lean or bend. she just sinks straight down. i know with directors there must have been a reason for it and i also noticed she did become more beautiful and her eyes more radiant. plus she was totally comfortable with what she had taken part in. it was as if that was the right thing to do because her beauty and career took precedence.

looking back at jesse's personality change, it seemed more like she was hypnotized until she got cornered at the pool;then she snapped out of it (not an intentional pun). why else would she disregard the kindness, friendship and support she got from dean? she was in a trance after the runway. she needed to get out of ruby's place but maybe under a spell. ruby had a robe laid out for her, then that dress and all the fun make up at her disposal.plus that house was gorgeous. i wish she had gotten down from the diving board and ran off. of course that was not the plot though. i'm gonna try to read the script. www.whoaisnotme.net/scripts/TND_2014_UD.pdf

Just finished watching the movie and some reviews on KZfaq but I myself saw some symbolism in it that nobody talked about so far: - Notice the Triangle in 4:48 is actually made up of four triangles; the 3 outer triangles that are presumably designating Ruby, Gigi and Sarah are all pointing down, while the inner triangle that is Jesse is pointing up. I think that it sums up the whole movie considering Jesse's rise meant the fall of the three girls, with scenes determining the turning point of every one of them. Interestingly, the bigger triangle itself is pointing down, which is what happened to Jesse in the end. It's basically a story of a rise and fall. - I think the moon symbolizes Greek goddess Artemis, twin sister of Apollo, who is the goddess of the hunt but who is rumored in some sources to be queer. The scene in 9:37 shows Ruby in some sort of worshipping position to the moon, as if she's "blessed" in a sort for fulfilling her hunt and lesbian duties/desires. I thought about that the moment I saw the scene! - Notice how Gigi in 10:48 was vomiting in a triangle shaped seat. If you thought there was some all-seeing eye symbolism, I think this is the most straight forward scene. Triangle? Eye? Mix with guilt and you'll feel as if Gigi is feeling that she is "watched" and seeks redemption, only to die like every person who once belonged to the secret society and tried to leave it, according to many conspiracy theories. Hope you liked my take on these specific points! Needed to tell someone but none of my friends have watched the movie or are interested in this sort of movies and analysis!

I agree with most of his analysis but for me after watching this a couple times I think that Jessie was always a narcissists who was in love with herself. She was simply putting on an act. She hardly ever seemed surprised or even excited by any of the opportunities she gets. Also I think aside from the fact that she is very young she has probly never been attracted to any one except herself and that's why she spurned the advantages of everyone who approached her. Lastly I don't think the witches had a 3 step plan I just think that once she rejected Ruby; Ruby no longer considered Jessie sex but food and yall know the rest. Just my 2 cents loved the movie and a big fan of the channel. 💋

I personally thought only Ruby was a witch and not Gigi or Sarah. My thoughts were both the latter's reactions to Jesse's success would not have been as genuinely shocked and hurt if they were planning to 'sacrifice', eat and absorb Jesse's beauty - since they knew she was going to be at least killed later. How I see it Ruby was the one planning Jesse's murder and Gigi and Sarah came in on the plan due to their jealousy.
@lauraviseniya5930
@lauraviseniya5930 7 жыл бұрын
On the contrary, I think they all were witches. Ruby was the leader of their coven. She was attracted by Jesse and wanted her to join them. In my opinion, that's the reason why they did not attack the girl before,even if they wanted to, because of their envy (Gigi drank her blood when she cut herself with the broken glass, for example). It is when Jesse refused Ruby's advances, that then, instead of being "sex", she became "food". So, Gigi and Sarah became unleashed.

love the pagan take on this! may i also add: during the last full moon scene (the “end of the ritual”) if we’re speaking of pagan traditions and symbols, the moon symbolizes the female energy, her childhood, youth, and womanhood, through the moon’s cycle (new moon, crescent, full) that cycle also symbolizes the female menstrual cycle. so when we see the blood flowing out of Amber’s body, it could possibly be literal period blood, adding more to the symbolism of “ending the cycle” or “ending the ritual”. that also connects to the fact that the movie touches on the subject of the female body a lot, and i feel like the whole movie is an allegory to the cycle the female body goes through during life: childhood-innocence and being pure, youth-experiencing and people trying to take advantage of you, adulthood-being already experienced and a literal “model” to others, and oldness-losing your charm and being seen as worthless… decaying… fading… dying. that cycle is especially prominent in the beauty industry, where women have to be judged based solely on their body, and during that cycle their identity is being taken away. we can also see how the movie symbolizes stripping away women’s identity for example during the scene where keanu puts a knife down her throat, harming her vocal chords, not allowing her to speak, to have a mind and a literal say (because that’s how people in the industry view her, just a body) also the smiley with the X on it’s mouth that amber draws after trying to r*pe her is related to that, and also the fact that jessie’s character barley speaks throughout the entire movie.

I agree with most of your explanation, but i see Ruby's part a little differently: When she asks Jesse in the beginning if she's "food or sex", she really means it, and it's a key point. Ruby was genuinely attracted to Jesse and wanted to possess her through sex, but only when she refused her, then Jesse became "food" in Ruby's plan. Using sex to cast spells or obtain some energy is long part of witchcraft in history. And even with all the witchcraft storyline, everything in this movie is still a metaphor. In the end, everything in our world is about food or sex, like a power chain. It's a great movie.
@pahzplace7853
@pahzplace7853 5 жыл бұрын
Actually there's no difference between the two. As someone fucking you (in the sense that Ruby wanted to have her way with Jessy is not different than her pushing her into an empty pool to die and collecting her body to eat her. Just the fact that she did the latter says that her question was nothing more than a mind fuck, as both (to her) are one in the same. When you speak about someone being genuinely attracted to someone, there is an attraction( force) that goes beyond lust and the need to be the first one to have, (as in sex) possess and take control of said persons mind. The' a whole nother attraction, as being attracted usually involves ***genuine interest, concern, the need to get to know said person and spend quality time with them. This Ruby character is in a class (with these two other chicks) of their own. As if Ruby was so genuinely attracted and the kind of person that would have been a good help meat and older figure for Jessy, she would have never discussed any details with the other girls about Jessies person life and whatever she told her in that initial scene. Like the blabber mouth whore that she was she ran back and gossiped about a young girls life to the hags that she hung with. Only to shrug when Gigi threw whatever she discussed with Ruby in Jessies face when she felt insulted. When you shoot the breeze with people and or you're just talking and sharing whatever info about yourself (doesn't matter if it is important or not) you don't expect that the person that you're talking to will run a marathon to deliver it elsewhere, to inform others about you ..........>especially if it is in a way that whoever they're telling can use it to embarrass you or to be petty. I'm confused at to why and how anyone can't see that Ruby wasn't shit from jump.

Starting to realize Winding Refn films all have certain themes/ideas he likes to explore. Only God Forgives was about responsibility, justice, forgiveness. Gonna have to rewatch from Bronson to present for the others. Neon Demon was about beauty, femininity and what those are. He argues (persuasively I think) that beauty is as much about purity, innocence, humility, virtue as it is physical material. It's what gives Jesse her radiance and "it" factor. It's why she's a virgin. It's why plastic Gigi couldn't handle the consumption of Jesse's energy/essence. But it is also about the modeling industry and hollywood. I don't think it was a mistake they chose LA over the fashion capitals. New York, Paris, etc

I think the triforce style symbol was also pretty clearly a representation of how the three women were surrounding Jessie and offering her up as a sacrifice It's almost akin to the themes of Stephen King's books that it factor, that's Jesse's shine That's why the fashion designer only noticed her, obviously being a virgin also has something to do with it because she's pure and almost every sense she doesn't drink or do drugs she doesn't mingle with terrible people which is why it's so symbolic that she represents the empty space of the three triangles a triangle pointing upwards a kind of somebody being upright and virtuous Where's the other three point down and you can surmise what that means

You provided a completely knew outlook over the entirety of the film now. Thank you for that! There was something a bout the film that I already had quite admired, but I could never put my finger on it. Had no clue about all this pagan mumbo jumbo - but figured the triangles and such were in reference the illuminati. It's also a symbol of purity/ unity so that also came across. Sometimes even symbolizing a doorway - like you point out in this analysis. Very nice! Thanks for this!

1. Jena Malone’s character doesn’t want Jack to defile Jessie because she wants her for herself for multiple reasons. 2. Jessie is not supposed to be classically pretty; supermodels are more interesting than necessarily beautiful, and Jessie’s beauty is both interesting and eternally youthful. 3. Jessie is practical about her own beauty because she’s had to be. She’s turned egotistical because of the flashing programming. 4. Jack covers her in gold as he’s idolizing her. 5. Jessie (as fresh meat) is eaten/chewed up by the industry/users and spat back out again. Such is the story of so many naive hopefuls, traveling to LA to be a big star. 6. Not 100% sure of the cougar’s representation. Maybe the beasts of LA? Something to do with her own subconscious? 7. Sarah already had a taste of Jessie’s blood, maybe that was enough to grant her some “power?” Whereas Gigi just ate.

This video is old but I’ve got to give you props. You are the only person who is talked about this film on KZfaq who saw the correlation with Elizabeth Bathory. You are one of the few who realised that Ruby did not die lying on the floor in the moonlight. She was obviously very happy and going through some sort of renewal. I do think Jesse had a choice as to whether or not she was going to be devoured by the other witches. When Ruby asked her “are you food or sex“ I think it was a choice. I think she could have become Rubys lover and Ruby would have protected her.

That's a really great analysis and clears up what confusion I had about the way in which their coven and rituals had worked, also nice one for breaking down the meaning of the triangles I've got to say it's one of the best films that came out last year. Don't see the point in the new Suspiria remake being made, this film seems like an adequate companion piece.

To all the people saying that it was her "innocence" that made the one chick kill herself, I disagree. She stopped being innocent when she allowed the demon to take her over. I would instead say that the chick simply couldn't handle having the better beauty inside her.

@AstralAustin 7 жыл бұрын
Atom Storm in the original script before Ruby's death, she cries over them eating Jessie and says "I just wanted to feel human" and then Sarah slits her throat. But Nic Refn discarded the original script because it was too obvious what they were. He wanted a more interpretive feel instead of an obvious occult atmosphere
@corporatestatusbrah

Brandon Reed the script never says they are witches so them "thinking" they are witches would not be true. They are in fact witches. The moon scene where ruby gives birth to blood is supernatural and only backs it up.

Bathing in blood is a sort of initiation , it wasn't because they wanted to become beautiful to be accepted , it was after they bathe in blood of an innocent that they were truly accepted and recognized within the industry, because they have done a sacrifice/ritual it just shows how people in the entertainment industry get to the top and get recognized behind the scenes . I'd get into every little detail of this movie which has a lot of symbolism and meaning in real life practice.but that's such a drag
@lucyboni8024
@lucyboni8024 2 жыл бұрын
Oh and the scene of jesse releasing her blood under the full moon just represents her soul that is dead and leaving her, it also represents rebirth but not in a good way due to the fact that she bled excessive blood from her vagina , she already gave her soul to the devil thus its done under the full moon which is usually associated in witchcraft and paganism.

I don't think that she was ever meant to be seen as the "Perfect Image of Beauty" in a literal sense. It's more like her innate innocent is seen as something rare and precious, separating her from the dozen of girls like Ruby, Gigi, and Sarah. It could also be a nod to her being so new that the grime and dirt of the industry hasn't started to rub off on her, almost like she was a pristine marble statue being judged against the old, worn out ones that have been around for years.

It makes perfect sense that ruby and the 2 other models are in a witch coven, especially with Ruby's occult tattoos. How ever I wish you dove deeper into some parts of the movie because I have some theories myself. The motel Keanu's character ran was super sketch, because it seemed like he was renting it out to a lot of underage girls, what if he was working with Ruby? Selling her young runway models with no trace of family to kill and eat for fame and youth. It kind of highlights the whole adrenochrome conspiracy in Hollywood. It's obviously not exactly clear but in a way it would make sense. I really believe that Ruby and Keanu's character were in some sort of cahoots together.

You're the only one in this comment section that gets this lol. Everyone is in on it...which is why Jesse is clearly not supermodel material, but everyone tells her she is. Everyone in the movie that says she's the next big thing, and everyone that "helps" her advance, including the hotel manager, is in on it. And drinking blood to stay young isn't meant to be symbolic. Also, the guy in the video keeps saying "pagan" rituals, etc. Ain't nothing Pagan (Gaia religion) about the rituals and magick anywhere in this movie...all this stuff is very anti-life, anti-Gaia. Ruby's tattoos are found in Sumerian and Babylonian death cults.

Wow! That was a good analysis! A very interesting take on the movie, although I think it's a metaphor for the entire beauty industry, and not so literal. But it definitely helps to understand the movie better. When I watched it I was very confused, took me a while to get it.
