The nerve bypass: how to move a paralysed hand

Күн бұрын

After a broken neck left him quadriplegic, Ian Burkhart was told he would never be able to use his hands. Now he can grasp a bottle and pick up a credit card by using a computer plugged directly into his brain. Special software is able to decode his thoughts and convert them into electrical signals in his hand, bypassing the damaged nerves in his spine. Now Ian has regained an amazing degree of control over his hand, each movement stimulated by his own thoughts.
The research was carried out at The Ohio State University and Battelle Memorial Institute. Chad Bouton was based at Battelle for the duration of the project. He has since moved to the Feinstein Institute.

Some people might have the feeling that progress is slow because of movies/games and so on... But I think our progress is amazing in all domains, and that in a few decades, some terrible limitations of the past will be overtaken.

I think it is slow, very slow indeed, that is in comparison with how fast it can actually be. Things like, patents, propriety code, competition based economic system - hinder it greatly.

I had a brain surgery 5 years ago, when I was 9 and my left hand is paralyzed. I can move the arm normal, just a bit slower, but my hand won't move like I want it to. I'll do these thinking exercises and maybe it'll get better after some time. I also started playing guitar, but when I want to strum with my left hand, it moves too slowly. I hope this brain implant will change the world and help people in need of this. Such an amazing device

This tecnology can be used also to control computers just by thinking, they can map the neural activity to different keyboard keys and mouse movements for example... Also if they find a way to send signals back in to the brain it can be used for brain to brain comunications, telepathy...

Wow, that is really cool how someone also thought about the sleeve concept that bypassed the spinal cord too. I have thought about that for about 2 years now and always wondered why people didn't try it then. Reading the paper, I can see that decoding and encoding those signals must have been very difficult. I think though that it would benefit to reverse engineer a neural signal reaching the arm and hand from an uninjured person, determine common signal patterns, then see how those patterns relate to another healthy person, then we would be able to find out how unique a neural signal is between different persons. If their is a significant difference than than nothing, but if there is not a significant difference then I can see a way to use the information from a normal brain to hand signal, then reapply it to a person who has doesn't have a normal signal.

Hmm, if he has some basic connection in his nerve path, it would be interesting if the assisted indirect path aids regrowth of the spine. It's pretty cute but the best way is to rebuild the natural path, which I guess will ultimately be much easier anyway and where effort should be placed.

I want to know more about the filament wrap on his forearm. Is the electrical signal sent through the skin, or was there additional surgery to provide a pathway to the muscles? Perhaps that item itself to be useful to people with different problems like muscular dystrophy, since the major problem is muscles wasting away because of under-use. TENS units were considered, but don't really provide real exercise to the muscles... this filament wrap sure looks like it could.
