The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner is the sixth generation of the off-road workhorse, and it features a hybrid powertrain for the first time. While we analyze the non-hybrid models separately, the 4Runner Hybrid has the most off-road capability. The i-Force Max powertrain, which consists of a turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor, generates 326 horsepower, a 48-hp boost over the basic gasoline 4runner's turbocharged four-cylinder. The real benefits come in the torque department, with the hybrid producing 456 lb-ft vs the basic model's 317 lb-ft, a considerable 139 lb-ft increase. Otherwise, the 2025 4Runner Hybrid receives the same comprehensive list of updates as the standard 4Runner, including fresh but still rugged exterior styling with a traditional fold-down rear tailgate and a revised chassis with new suspension geometry, both of which are heavily influenced by its updated-for-2024 Tacoma sibling. The interior receives comparable upgrades, particularly the infotainment system, which has an optional 14.0-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, and a wireless phone charging pad. Best of all, the new 4runner retains its basic objective of offering factory off-road prowess, even in hybrid form, with Toyota positioning the hybrid-only Trailhunter trim as the most capable of the lot. The redesigned 4Runner is expected to arrive in Toyota showrooms by the end of 2024.The 4Runner Hybrid's powertrain combines a turbocharged 278-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor to produce a total of 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor is fitted into an eight-speed transmission and powered by a 1.87-kWh battery pack. Toyota claims that the hybrid powertrain delivers the highest power ever in a 4Runner. Though this identical powertrain is intended for use in the current Tacoma hybrid, we have yet to put one through its paces with our test equipment; we will update both models with relevant data as soon as we do.
