I had a Bugout that had major problems with the springs. They broke on me after about 2 weeks. Sent it in for warranty, and when they sent it back, the springs broke again after only a couple weeks.

3v is much tougher. I gladly take less edge retention for the trade off of less chipping under hard use.

Nice review! I have no problem with the springy scale Bugouts; there’s a good argument that the flex actually makes the knife stronger and more resistant, but agree it doesn’t feel substantial. I have the M4 bailout and have this one on order. It is way too much money, but luckily scored one with a coupon for $40 off. I actually can work around the lanyard, even though it’s a bit in the way. Here’s hoping they got the 3V heat treat right, I have a 2 year old Puuko but haven’t noticed any soft issues with it so maybe that one missed the soft batch? FYI, I have hundreds of knives and either groan or crackup every time someone shows a TRM or Umnumzaan, as both are totally unobtainable, so I don’t get the point. I’m happy for you, and nothing personal, but don’t like seeing knives that I’m not allowed to buy as well. And that’s coming from someone who has 10 CRK’s and 15 Hinderers, but at least you have a very good chance getting a Sebenza. TRM on the other hand hasn’t had any knives available for years. In any case thanks for the review! Hope the one I have coming turns out as well. P.S. Got it this morning, and love it, scary sharp! I'm not sure if I'm going to change out the backspacer or not, but probably will keep it since it matches the thumb studs. And you're right, it's a duller orange but still looks great. I'm glad I waited for this one instead of getting the earlier 3V FRN model.

TRM goes months at a time now with almost all of their models in stock on their website. The "unobtainium" thing hasn't been true for a really long time, but the truth has never stopped fools from repeating nonsense in the knife world so good work, I guess...

@@CNYKnifeNut Horse$hit. Yeah, "months at a time," and they've been obtainable "for a really long time," except for the 12 months of the year that I check it weekly. "Out of stock," month after month, on the Atom and Neutron 2 which are the ones I want. I easily spend $1500 a month on knives and have bought from 40 online retailers, and know where to look. Even Striders are easier to get if you're willing to spend a grand or more and wait for one to pop up. I'll get one of each someday, when I travel to Atlanta for Blade Show and buy them directly. There's always some wannabe "knife expert" posturing fool repeating nonsense on KZfaq that he picked up third hand from some obscure knife forum, so good work, I guess...

@@isveryniceyes I've noticed that the new "chalky feeling" handle will look like it's slightly polished down in spots. Especially if you carry something in your fifth pocket of your jeans that bears against it? I carry a SAK there which has affected some light colored knife scales. With the orange colored aluminum a darker jean fabric can almost discolor the metal if it's rubbed hard enough. You don't notice it on the green M4 Bailout. I would soak a cotton cloth with WD-40 or some kind of household oil and I'll bet it will rub and even out. Even baby/mineral oil like you'd use on Micarta. I’d normally suggest Flitz or Simichrome metal polish, but wouldn't want to take a chance on rubbing the finish off on the anodized aluminum, and I'm pretty sure that would at least affect the color tone of the anodizing.

Update: two of my notifications kicked off today, and for the first time since I've been tracking in over two years there are over 25 Atoms, Nerds, and Shadows available on two sites. Not the biggest vendors, but fairly well known ones. AND accessories including custom scales for the Atoms. But the TRM site still shows them all still out of stock. Do a search for them now and you should get some hits...

I think because 3V has 3 times the corrosion resistance of the M4 they used previously in the green aluminum Bailout. It's also near the max in toughness, but M4 has it beat by quite a bit in edge retention. The toughness is one reason so many makers use it in fixed blade knives. I think this is my only folder now in this steel, I can't think of any other makers using it in a folder, except maybe Kizer, or perhaps Kansept...?

@@E.L.RipleyAtNostromo thanks for the reply, I think demeko the knife company also made some 3v folders, good to know it has somewhat a good corrosion resistance as a tool steel, I look forward to get one.:)

@E.L.RipleyAtNostromo Жыл бұрын
@@Iamthedudeman00 I think you're right, one of the AD 20.5 KC offered had 3V I think? As for corrosion resistance, I go by the steel chart on BHQ, which shows my favorite M4 at only 2/10, which is why most M4 blades are coated, while this 3V is 6/10. The toughness on this is an impressive 9/10, while M4 has the same as Magnacut, 7/10. The edge retention on 3V is a decent 5/10, while M4 is 9/10, but then you have to sharpen it! Def easier with 3V...

@@E.L.RipleyAtNostromo I do find these scales not particularly accurate in a way that I know for a fact that there are much more wear resistant steels than M4 like 15v or maxmet, etc but somehow M4 is at 9/10, but yeah I guess it gives a relative scale. It is rare for someone to compare tool steel stainless resistance, so I will take what bladeHq says as fact for now.:) if you haven’t know about this channel, he does all kind of wear resistance and stainless resistance properties of poplar knife steels I have found quite helpful: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rt-cpth1ptTMgJc.html
