I had the original lightweight blue Colt Viper with the alloy frame, 4" barrel with fixed sights. It had a very smooth double action trigger pull and was very accurate. Sad I had to sell it in 1995 but kept my S&W Model 36 with the 3" bull barrel which I still have it today. I kept the Smith because I felt at that time that it would last longer than the Viper because of its all steel frame.

The Colt Viper, whether the older .38 Model, or the new 2024 .357 Model, were over priced in 1977 and way over priced in 2024. Just a point of interest, the Armscor Model 200 is a "dead ringer" for the 77-Viper and the 2024-Viper. Dimensions are almost exact, grips will interchange with Armscor and Colt Viper Models, they are that close to each other. Now gun experts of the world will quickly condemn the Armscor 200 as a "cheap" buy, no quality controls, and certainly not reliable. The price I paid for my Model 200 was 250.00 several years ago. For two full years of shooting this so-called unreliable revolver, standard .38 loads and occasional hot .38's, and I'm still waiting on this unreliable Model 200 to break down. I owned a Colt Viper several years back. Purchased it used from local pawnshop for 275-dollars. I had no idea the value of these alloy frame, six-shot, Colt's would rise as they have, but they did. A leaf trigger spring in the Viper with a coil spring in the Armscor 200. The weight of the 4-inch barrel Viper was about 25-oz, whereas the Armscor has a 29oz. weight with a steel frame. The Viper's twin brother of 1977, was the Police Positive. Same gun as the Viper, but with a steel frame, and different name markings on the barrel. These were over-priced in 1977, as is the new stainless steel 2024 Colt Viper in .357 Magnum at 999-dollars for a fixed sight cop revolver. As a cop back in the early 70's, the Colt Police Positive was a popular revolver with foreign agencies and some stateside PD's. But not enough to keep it alive on the Colt assembly line. The Colt product was good, but overpriced as hell. When you are talking about a mid-to-large size agency of 200 officers or more, the S&W Model 10 saved the day for many budget crunched PD's. A damn great gun, theS&W Model 10 was standard issue with numerous PD's and Security Officers in the US, and foreign orders My own PD issued the Model 10, I can attest to its quality, reliability, and long service record. Colt would not modify their high dollar prices in the revolver days of law enforcement. S&W sold so many Model 10's to police, security firms, and civilians the competition could not match. Ruger came along in the early 70's with their Security-Six Revolvers, that were chambered in .38 or .357, adjustable or fixed sights. This Ruger offering cut a dent into S&W sales to law enforcement. My point in all this is that in post war times, Colt lost 1st Place in sales to S&W because their line of revolvers and pistols were overpriced. A labor union had invaded Colt inputs war times and the labor expense at Colt shot straight up, and prices on Colt firearms would subsequently follow the climbing labor cost. Union strikes through the years hurt Colt terribly. Many American gun buyers felt the Union presence at Colt would sooner or later put Colt out of business. Colt has hung on, going under a time or two, but rising up again when they brought back the revolver line that had one time, had them on top of firearm sales (before post war Union formed). With a new Python introduction in 2020, a new King Cobra, and new Viper, the gun buyers, starving for something new at Colt, were thrilled at the Python comeback at 1500-dollars a pop. For Python Revolvers, most gun buyers admire and wish, but cannot afford. The same will apply to the new Viper. Gun buyers like myself, I will admire and wish, but cannot afford a thousand dollars for a fixed sight .357 revolver. A type of double-action I carried for years as a beat cop in the 70's, 80's, 90's and into the new century at retirement time. I always purchased second-hand Colt Revolvers because of the new gun prices back in the 70's. The Official Police, the Police Positive Special were two of my carry favorites in a 40+year cop career. I will admire and wish for the new Viper, so I will pick up my Model 200, purchased 10-years ago, that experts criticized, and then I will get my two other Armscor six-guns out and admire their Colt Diamondback looks. The Model 206 in double & single action, and another Model 206 with a DAO trigger. I own three Armscor six-guns now. Their service to myself has shamed the naysayers that severely criticized these "VERY RELIABLE" revolvers. Sorry for the length. The new Viper from Colt fired me up!
