The real issue with Enchanted Portals is that the developers forgot to do anything aside from reference Cuphead, like there's nothing wrong with taking inspiration from another source but you also need to add in your own ideas too and they just kinda didn't do that, like what does Enchanted Portals do better or differently than Cuphead? And the answer is "not much at all"

I saw the game before the release and I just *knew* people were going to rag on it. Not even for the poor gameplay or lack of an interesting story, but just solely for the fact that they were trying *so hard* to be the new Cuphead, that it's so evident from the look and style.

Developers don’t realize that Cuphead took yearssss to make! I think this concept of traveling to different places through magic is cool but the bosses also don’t make sense in a way? I think if they stuck to a more fairytale magic like how the princess kissed the frog and the witch! This game could’ve been really good, but like you said the funding and the ideas really lacked. Also I’ve actually never heard of this game before until today. It seems like some easy demos and given out to creators would’ve helped. Sad to see such good game potential be wasted😢

I love how in the cow boss scene in the trailer, looking closely at the characters movements reveals that they weren't actually playing the game. The characters are just gifs edited over the boss fight. Wow.

Something that might've been interesting is if they went for different artstyles for the different worlds. Like in the 2nd phase of the witch boss it looks very Tim Burton esque, skinny chracters, big black circles around the eyes. Or in the tree boss fight it looks like the main character turned into a character from Scaredy Squirrel, and then the boss after that they it became anime for some reason. So instead of everything being 1930's styled like Cuphead the first level could be Tim Burton themed, world 2 could be modern cartoon themed or something idk, world 3 could be all water coloured, world 4 generic Disney style, etc.

I still do feel bad for the devs cuz while it's pretty clear they copied way too much of Cuphead, they still made a game from the ground up with original characters, bosses, etc. like, I can't even call it a shameless rip off, just a clone. honestly, if it wasn't for the rubberhose visuals, it probably would have not gotten this much hate ever since it's announcement, which does make me wonder if that did not play a big role for the game's current state

The game costs more than Cuphead. MORE THAN CUPHEAD.

After playing Enchanted Portals i have one question... why didn't they put a single line of dialogue in this game? Cuphead is memorable not only thanks to the art style, gameplay, etc. but because thanks to the dialogues we know that cuphead and mugman are 2 carefree kids tricked by the devil, we know their opinion about the various islands they explore, there are NPCs with personalities that help you by giving coins, etc. With this i don't mean they should have put 999,999 dialogues like in a Final Fantasy game, but atleast some lines of dialogues to explain the story and connect everything together would work really well. LIKE, look at that part where there are still images! It looks perfect to place some dialogues. This game could have been a good game similiar to Cuphead, like Undertale is very similiar to games like the EarthBound/Mother series and Touhou Project, BUT, instead we got this.

Let's not forget Cuphead was developed by 2 guys (in the early years of development) who quit their jobs, sold their cars and quite literally were willing to risk everything they had to make this idea happen. Just some random studio trying to rip it off using rubberhose/30s cartoon style will never get close to them cause their motivation and dedication is way less.

If anyone asks the Piano Musician Boss is based on Beethoven, not Mozart. Beethoven was the one who was Deaf in one Ear, not Mozart.

this game gives the vibe of it being made by a bunch of artists that dont actually know anything about programming or making a video game. it's giving very "alright i just finished all the final animations for the characters and bosses. time to start programming them!" energy. which sucks too because like, i know you kind of said the animation is "meh", but as an artist i am actually very impressed with it! especially on the bosses. sure it's not a masterpiece, but compared to a lot of other smaller indie titles this game's art and animation is genuinely really good!

I feel like the idea of the game is good, I just wish they scrapped the "Run n' gun" levels and just stuck with the bosses. The sound design is also horrible, I wish they spent time and didnt release until the game was fully finished.

My only problems with it are that it's too expensive and it doesn't have save system. If it cost like 5 dollars and had save system, it would be basic indie game with pretty animation.

One thing about this game that actually impressed me is that it’s made by only two people so a lot of the stuff that’s wrong with the game is somewhat fair. Granted 26 dollars is way too much for this game and the games concept was a bit shady/shakey. But still I feel like if they had more funding and more people to work on this it would’ve been a decent game.

Asking for a key to detroy a game, now that's what I call integrity! 😂 It's a shame though, half of the stuff mentioned really sound like easily avoidable issues if they had playtesters or just experience in making platformers. Like this is exactly the kind of stuff I notice in jam games usually. And I like the design for a bunch of bosses here, but yeah just seems random. Slight devil's advocating: Cuphead's run & gun levels were also way more tolerable when you avoided everything with the smoke dash, I'm sure they noticed this and that's why there's a pacifist reward 🤓

There is a difference to bootlegging and getting inspired by something, and sadly this game doesn't realize that the difference is effort. They put so much time in trying to be similar to Cuphead that they forgot to make the things that are original actually good

The most important thing to know as an indie developer is your limits. I think if the game nicked the shoot ‘em up segments, it would’ve turned out so much better. Sure, maybe they would’ve needed to lower the price, but more content doesn’t mean the game is better.

Honestly, I don't mind so called "clones". I think it can actually work really well. If you do something unique with it. Lemme give an example: Bug fables, this game is very heavily inspired by paper Mario. But what makes that different in my opinion is that it puts it's own unique twist on the formula with three active members at once. Aswell as having an amazing story. However this game doesn't innovate anywhere.

This all could've been avoided if the devs just got some help to make a DLC sized mod for the original game given how nice the designs are for most of the characters...

The game doesn’t even work as a story. Which should’ve been the one thing that they nailed with or without a budget. Why are we fighting these bosses. In Cuphead, we’re stealing people’s souls, so of course the bosses are gonna fight back. In Enchanted Portals, all we’re doing is chasing a sentient book and trying to go home. Why are we killing these bosses and why do they want to kill us.

Instead of being a zombie for that one point of the fight, they should have made you a zombie for the whole level, and given you maybe a different moveset that goes along with it. Then, with the squirrel transformation, they should have had a forest level, where you were the squirrel, with a different moveset for that. It had a lot of potential, sadly.

I was imagining the plot of the sequel where Boy Wizard gets cursed by The Elder Spellbook and falls ill meaning Girl Wizard must collect ingredients for a potion that won't cure Boy Wizard but will allow him to astral project to Elder Spellbook's location and explain that Younger Spellbook is lying. I just came up with this plot then suddenly I got the new covid strain. What the hell, game?! I was being nice! I was helping you come up with a sequel! Or is this not you but my gift of prophecy is activating again?!

The closest thing I can say resembles this is lords of the fallen. Remember that? The first "big" soulslike . That game was basically doing what this game is doing. Just "remember that really good game that you like? Well here's that but way less interesing"

(Not so) fun fact… The enemy placement in the linear levels is RANDOMLY GENERATED. If you try to speedrun or progress too fast, the enemies will load in so fast they stack and become nearly unavoidable, especially in levels that rely more on platforming.
