I think what Ichika and Tim Henson figured out, is if you can apply these ideas to some chiller hip-hop style beats, it's becomes more relatable to a much wider group of people. They got a whole new generation of people interested in guitar again. Just like Alexi Laiho, Synyster Gates, Matt Heafy, Dimebag etc got a whole new generation into guitar as well.

This is the exact same notion I was picking up and I’m currently working on a video that covers this concept. Being able to transform a genre to appeal to larger audiences plays a vital role in long term success

@@cqnzr-clipsgameplay5706 I'm from the same era. I just remember those guitarists back then all over the major magazines, they all sold a lot of guitars at the time. I even forgot to mention bands like In Flames, Meshuggah, Killswitch Engage, AFI were hugely influential to me and a lot of people. I remember when Tosin and Periphery came into the scene too, it was like an alien playing guitar. Too many bands to list really. Good memories 😁

I think you hit the nail on the head there. What differs is that metal was such a monumental part of guitar playing that it became really hard to differ from whatever else. I do think we lost some aspects such as well-balanced sound-profiles but I also think that trends come and go and expecting Manuel's and Henson's sound will last forever is naive.

I got so tired of playing the guitar that I just stopped playing altogether for more than 2 years. Then, when Polyphia came out with "G.O.A.T", I ran into it by chance and it changed everything for me. I had no idea a guitar could sound this way. With that, Pandora's box was open and KZfaq kept pushing all the "modern" guitar gods like Ichika and Manuel on me. I was blown away and picked up my guitar again immediately and haven't skipped a day since! Instead of getting discouraged by the skill of this new wave of guitar icons I just find them utterly inspiring, and I know they've collectively inspired and created a huge new wave of what will be tomorrows guitar virtuosos. Can't wait to see what the kids are going to be up to in 10 or 20 years! Great video, you're an awesome dude. Just goes to show that the future of music is and always has been in good hands, you just have to look around.

Actually loving this new guitar age. The technicality is absolutely insane nowadays and it's amazing. On one side you have bands like Polyphia, who play the melodic, beautiful tracks that they do. Then the other side it's like Rings of Saturn & Berried Alive with their crazy but more sinister dark stuff. I don't even play guitar, I was happy being able to play Linkin Park songs back in the day but now, jesus christ lmfao.

This new age of guitar is such widespread thing with so many talented artist that I don't see it dying soon. But more importantly, it's not just about showing how fast you are like Batio or Malmsteen did in the late 80's, it's not just exhibitionism, the technical proficiency is all about purpuse and that's why we have such an incredible array of wondefull guitarrists with so diferent stiles, Polyphia with their mix of Hip-hop, Plini with his Jazz influenced sound, Animals as leaders and their experimental atonal sound, Sithu Aye with his J-pop influences or whatever hapens to cross David Maxim Micic at that day, so many sounds, so many influences, so many technics and all of them with an unic purpuse beyond showing off how fast they are. Even if it loses momentum at some point, the creativity desplayed here is going to leave an imprint in guitar for a long long time.
@monfloral

Love this comment! I think the technical proficiency has definitely taken today’s music to a new level. And you’re right, guitarists are incorporating sounds from various genres and expanding their musical approach. Guitar is no longer just an instrument used for rock music, it’s now seen more as a tool to bring together a collection of influences

Let’s keep it real Luis. Some of those earlier Players, while proficient in their craft, they didn’t really write “songs” to stir or share the heart as much does this new generation of players. It wasn’t as cool or accepted as it is now. Except Steve Vai. He’s always written from the heart.

The new guitar age brought back to many great things and innovates by remixing everything. It's fantastic, especially the japanese influences, catchy melodies and jazzy chords, what's not to like about that? I love it that we have so much of this style of music now and so many variants and influences. Tim managed to make even rap good, by taking the beats and making his guitar do all the talking. Love it, love it, love it. What a time to be alive. But admittedly, it's not all brand new and never heard before, but we get something that is really fitting to the times. Influences from all over the word and all kind of eras and all kind of genres.

I first got into guitar through acts like Johnny Marr, American Football and Hendrix and that was like almost two years ago. Their song writing ability is absolutely amazing, making hooks and melodies that stick, and I see that a lot in these new wave of artists. Strong melodies that fit these chord progressions while also being super technical and interesting to listen to and to play. And that technicality is also super tasteful. I think right now is the perfect time to be a guitarist because everyone has access to so many avenues of inspiration and information at their finger tips and I think that’s what these new guitarists do so well: their playing is inspired.

This is some quality content, extremely good summarization of everything I love about modern guitar. Honestly, I'm really glad I live in such an interesting time, I started playing guitar like 10 years ago but it wasn't until recently that I really fall in love with the instrument. Personally, I'm really enjoying new Neo Soul/RnB guitar wave, and it seems like it became more common among guitarists to know basic music therory like degrees, chord functions, voice leading etc. This may sound weird, but I think modern guitarists feel less like guitarists and more like musicians in that sense.

One thing I'm surprised isn't more common in "modern guitar" is the use of flamenco techniques; namely rasgueado. I have the quite the serious case of nail biting(onychophagia), so growing out nails to learn flamenco techniques was especially difficult for me, but I find the applications even with a pick to be exciting. There's a youtuber named Sebastiside who uses the same techniques if you're aware of him; I've only recently found your channel so if you've ever collabed with anybody or mentioned them in a previous video I wouldn't be aware. Been enjoying your content since finding you the other day. Cheers from Detroit.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS BROTHA! I’ve been telling Musicians about this wave of guitar playing for a good minute and feel like I’ve been talking to a wall. I would suggest folks for them to listen to and they would be like “Oh yeah well that’s nice. But it’s not really playing.” Your videos the first one I found a comprehensively shares what’s going on with this current approach to an ancient instrument. The fact that you tied your own musical journey into your exploration with this style is probably what I enjoy the most and I think makes it way more difficult for seasons musicians to just pass it off as flashy playing. You made it clear that it’s about looking for expensive ways to share your identity and being open to explore elements from several genres as opposed to sticking with the canon just one. I know you can’t include everyone but I wish you would’ve had the opportunity to also mention Naia Izumi. I also really liked your video on Polyphia.

@Jonathan Woods Bro!!! thank you so much. This is exactly why I made this video. This new wave is honestly something special whether people like it or not. Yes the playing can be seen as "flashy" but it's made up of musical approaches that are comprised of genre fusions that are pretty explorative

I know, 2 years too late, but I'll still comment on the question. Will probably die DOWN within the next 5ish years, but that's not because it's just some weird trend, but because attention span of people is short lived. Kids and young adults chase new trends, follow them until they are sick and tired of it and move on. Generally not being able to understand what they found great about it in the first place.

I'm probably not your typical respondent. I'm 54 years old and have been playing since I was 8 years old. So...46 years as a musician essentially. You mentioned Jimi Hendrix at the beginning. I am a huge fan of his and the funny thing is I think he would LOVE what is going on atm in guitar progression these days. I think this is a lot what Hendrix was reaching for in guitar playing but had no way to get there...The stuff you were showing I have discovered on my own because I like to know what people are doing. I think it's exactly what great musicians wait for in life...a new era of playing and meshing of styles and breaking of 'rules' that creates and aesthetic sound that is NEW. That is what we have here...will it disappear? I have my doubts...this IS something new and it is being refined into something great....how far will this refinement go? How many people will be able to make these techniques their own for the matter of expression? I mean I don't know all the answers...but I have seen good playing come and go...I don't see this stuff going anywhere. People like Steve Vai and others have done very similar things but a bit differently...this is an evolution in music happening in front of our eyes and who knows if it will reach a pinnacle like in the 60s where people rest on it, manipulate with it, and are able to be an individual in it for what they feel is proper artistic expression that allows to be that individual that stands on their own...you know what I mean? I just saw your video and thought...ya know this is worth talking about. I think it really depends though...and does it only have to be instrumental? I don't think that it does...nor should it be really...when it becomes a bled of genius talent is when I think it will really shine and differentiate itself...interesting stuff... Anyway I know this is an old video but a good post. I wish some older guitar players payed attention to this stuff like Tim Henson...something to aspire to have the ability to incorporate imo...

@Whitman1819 Hearing what you've seen yourself brings a lot of weight to what I was mentioning and exactly what I was trying to hit at. Of course I haven't been around to vividly see certain styles go in and out but it terms of what has been done in the past, this IS pretty unique to music as whole. In terms of the longevity of how long this era will last, only time will tell. It's still possible that something new could come along or we may even shift back to more "minimal" playing styles. Regardless, I'm here for it

Show a video with just the guitar, amp and some effects without the magic....To me it seems that the "magic" is better than the actual playing sometimes. Funnily enough, I feel like this is a natural progression from the 80s and 90s virtuosos (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteem, Guthrie Govan, etc.), but where they tended to focus on lead lines, key signatures, and running the neck, the modern virtuosos focus much more on chord phrasing first and then break that down into lead lines, key signatures, and running neck. For instance, Tim Henson has said many times that he takes popular chord progressions from pop and trap music, throws them into a midi interface, arpeggiates them, and then figures out how to play something similar. And given the prominence of DAWs now, many of these guitarists are also audio engineers (if only to an amateur level), meaning that they approach the creative process of music in an inherently different way. Additionally, I think music is going through a syncopation renaissance at the moment in a way it hasn't seen since the popularity of funk and disco. A perfect example of this, outside of the guitarists you discuss in your video, is Cory Wong.

Excellent content man! I am indeed excited to see what the future holds in the realm of the guitar world. It seems to be only getting better. I think the rise of electronic music in the 2010s showed many people that instrumental music could be just as entertaining and popular as any other kind of music, which I think is part of what gave rise to this new wave.

Guitar music is greater than its ever been and imho is far more innovative and pushes the boundaries of how a guitar can sound far more than any of the older artists in the past have. Not to discredit them for laying the foundations for guitar (cos youve always gotta give the oldies credit or fanboys get butthurt) but i just think the way guitar sounds now is so much more melodically advanced and beautfiul than any old school traditional guitar playing could be.

Okay these are 4 separate thoughts I had after I finished the video. I didn't have a connecting thread or order I thought I could put 'em in, so here they are in no particular order. XD Personally I think this particular style of guitar playing is right on the fence of making music evolve with it or just being relegated to sit next to the Math and Prog tables. Even if the guitar itself doesn't go along for the ride, I hope that this style of playing and blending genres is taken to the next level and further in the years to come. I managed to put my feelings on how this style sounds into words in only *one way*. It truly sounds like they're *singing* with their guitars. *ESPECIALLY* cats like Ichika. I think that because often times when I listen to quite a lot of songs by these artists I feel myself wanting to sing along... but there's no vocals to sing along with. I feel like this is exemplified when I listen to the Desmond Roberts covers/remixes of some of Ichika Nito's riffings on KZfaq. The singing that they do feels like what I hear out of Ichika's guitar even if that's not what was intended. I feel like there's a couple bands that go *really* undetected in this genre of music. Perhaps because they lean on the Math Rock/Midwest Emo sound of American Football, but I still feel like they deserve a seat at the table. SAWCE and Clever Girl. Even if they don't exactly fit, they should be listened to anyways. Guitar that sounds like this at least in *tone* is pretty much the third wheel on the vehicle of why I like certain J-Rock outfits as much as I do. (The first two wheels being the different flow of the vocals and even overall composition compared to the West, and the bass being given *so* much love in J-Rock. Seriously it sounds like after the vocals, the *bass* is what's given the most prominence and focus in a lot of J-Rock that I've heard.) Unison Square Garden, POLKADOT STINGRAY, Sokoninaru, maybe little bit of Bump of Chicken as well.

These points are GOLDEN. I completely agree with how this “genre” expresses the singing of the guitar. Bands that fall into this category are for the most part producing tunes that are hummable and memorable similar to vocals. That’s not a point that I touched on too much in the video but the riffs of this new genre place emphasis on filling which results in the guitar sounding as though it is singing due to complimenting chord combinations and the composition of notes. This genre is also so widely spread yet some bands do lean more towards the math rock side but in essence their components are similar to the once’s I’ve mentioned in the video. I feel like over time, this genre will become more defined and mature into a sound that will be even more recognizable especially considering it’s rising popularity.

I felt this age coming 10 years ago, when i was heavy into mathrock and progressive metal stuff but mainly CHON for like 2-3 years, and transitioned into making beats because i just hit a plateau with my guitar skills, i sort of gave up trying to be a guitar god lol. And when I heard Hudson Mohawke's first album Butter, and Rustie's Glass Swords, I got a similar feeling, super hyper and colorful, and then I got hooked on production. I followed that whole electronic wave with Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Mr Carmack, PC music, Sophie, Arca.. etc etc. While I was trying to make those kind of beats, every now and then I went back to the music i listened to in my guitar days and I was like fuckkk, if only i could combine some bouncey shred with these weird beats it would go offfff, but my guitar (and my chops) where mostly just gathering dust in the corner. Recently just got back into guitar because I feel like this merging of shred and electronic music is finally happening, and I love it, so exciting. Although I wish I never gave up, I'm finally practicing guitar again! By the way, another underrated guitar GOAT is The Plagued Raven. He's always had a super unique sound, but barely has any plays, look him up.

I do got to say, this is like the same thing that happened with people in the 80 doing an instrumental style of rock and hair metal which is know as neoclassical instrumental metal. and I believe history is repeating its self and it is happening to modern rap and trap music which makes me wonder what will music be like in ten year. but anyway thank you for the video, and I listen to your music everyday, off the clock is on of my favorites so far.

Really enjoyed the video and everything about it but when you highlight an artist like Ichigo and play his music but then talk over it, my brain starts to fight over wanting to listen to his music but also hear what you have to say about it. So be comfortable in having moments where you dont talk and let what youre trying to highlight play. Kind of like video essays on movies, the speaker usually stops talking for a bit when showing a scene. Even for just a brief moment, the pause is powerful.

I honestly think the mid-western emo mathcore bands aged like wine. We mocked them for a better part of a decade but they truly were the bridge between the guitar sound landscape we see today and the chugg soundscapes of a decade ago. Like we had boomers and X'ers saying "oh they're not playing with soul" and such and kinda split the metal scene into these hyper-atomized groups (and also face it; Panthera screaming "WHITE POWER" on stage also came from a bad vibe in general): where people were probably aware of bands like Porcupine Tree, NE Obliviscaris, etc. but the artists ended up losing money on tours because the scenes were just so small except for Metallica. Then Polyphia and co entered the scene, taking Matchore over hip hop drums and realizing that what people liked about those single coils screaming guitars were the rhythmic riffs but also kids are inspired by the hypertechnical riffs. They understood you didn't go into CAFO or Bleed right away but if you make something like Champagne where you basically transpose a Periphery melody down 4 steps you got a hit.

I wouldn't say that there is a specific way a 'guitar should sound'. You have a pretty rad ability so just enjoy the fact that you can play and have a musical ear. Nothing is really 'new' though you know? Someone, somewhere has already done what all these newer cats are doing. Not saying your taste is hackneyed or lame...just saying. Keep rocking (and practicing your chugg power chords 🤘)

I honestly don’t hear anything new at all- just tapping and arpeggios done. Sometimes it sounds quite frantically played and disjointed, but it’s sounds like a particular sound The trick to me is to listen to the music without seeing the actual performance- with many guitarists they are relying primarily on visual impact rather than the actual sounds.
