@@Phanbot01 I'm all for the physical SIM to go away as I think your (and my) complaint is relatively minor compared to the advantages of lack of physical SIM, but I was also thinking the same thing. I have 2 SIM cards for the same phone number for my iPhone and iPad, and sometimes I turn off cellular on my phone to use my cellular plan with my iPad. Will that niche use case essentially disappear now, or is there still a way to do this with eSIM (having 2 eSIMs on separate devices for the same phone number / cellular plan & not having to "transfer" your SIM to another device every time you decide to use your phone number / cellular plan on a different phone/device)?

I’m a buyer for an Aerospace company. And while I agree Apple uses insane terms sometimes, Aerospace grade Aluminum is an actual thing. 6061 or 7075 are the most common for our applications. My guess is Apple uses 6061.

But does that necessarily mean a better product? Because i'm sure every aluminum grade has its own balance of cost, durability, ductility, and hardness and so on, but how does "aerospace aluminum" translate to better phone shell? It's like of Ford advertised their truck by saying "we built this truck using aerospace aluminum" it would still be nonsense because they haven't explained any supposed advantages, just the name. If apple had said, we used aerospace aluminum to increase drop protection, that wouldn't be marketing nonsense, but when they just say "we used aerospace aluminum", it's pointless, mindless, marketing.

eSIM works the same way and can potentially be even more convenient. You don't move a physical object around and it can be as simple as scanning a QR code. You can also have one eSIM stored in multiple phones. Other than the really slow rollout, eSIM is better than physical cards in every way. It's not really new tech anymore and we should have been running entirely on eSIMs years ago.

Apple's "SmartHDR" isn't the same thing as the "Photonic Engine". Apple uses SmartHDR to enhance photos with high amounts of light. In mid-to-low light their "Deep Fusion" kicks in, and in low light Nigth Mode kicks in. This new Photonic Engine basically refers to a newer, better version of Deep Fusion, where the part of the processing of the photo that is done by the Neural Engine gets applied much earlier than in the past, applying the processing to the raw photo from the sensor rather than the final compressed JPEG output. In the end Deep Fusion hasn't gone away on the iPhone 14 models, but Photonic Engine now refers to the entire new imagine processing pipeline for mid-low light photos (in situations where it's not dark enough for Night Mode to be activated, but still dark).

My main issue with the SIM card removal is that carriers here in the US really enjoy charging a $30 activation fee. I have kept the exact same sim card and swapped my phones buying from Samsung and just bringing over the same sim. If I didn't do this, I would've wasted $90 is "activation fees" by now. I'd imagine the carriers will handle esim equally poorly

When phones started there were no SIM cards. SIM cards were the result that most phones were sold vendor locked and you needed cooperation from your carrier to migrate. This the SIM card was born to spur competition phones could be unlocked by the receiving carrier when the sim is inserted into the device. Nowadays most devices are sold unlocked thus this is less of an issue, but we shall see how it develops. The obvious downside is there is no longer the ability to be completely off a cell tower if your device is on and some entities want you to be connected

5:02 I don't agree with your statement. Switching SIM cards on the fly makes a HUGE difference while travelling. Buying some cheap local card is way better than paying fees to your provider. While you do get most of your data plan in across the whole EU, this no longer applies to UK for example. I can only imagine that switching e-sim will be really painful or that I'll have to carry out some QR code with me.. not really useful.

Recently, there have been a growing amount of SIM card scams involving 2FA, so this gets rid of that. It’s actually supposed to be more convenient than physical SIM cards. You can see this on the cellular iPads where you can select what carrier and plan you’d like and it’s activated right away. You can switch on the fly. For some reason, it’s not like this on iPhones and you have to scan a QR code or call to get it activated. Hopefully, they change it to be more like how the iPad works

Installing an eSIM into your phone can be as easy as scanning a QR code. You can store multiple eSIMs in your phone and you can have them ready in a backup phone, activating them from the settings. If you want to buy a plan, you don't need to visit a physical location to get your SIM. This is also true when traveling to other countries - you just buy the eSIM before you even get there. Every year we churn out billions of plastic sim cards. Getting rid of them will be a good thing.

For iPhone I would go Pro, or Pro MAX for the OLED display which is why I moved to the iPhone 11 Pro. Nice to be able to see the screen when I am out walking around, and in sunlight. When it comes to eSIM I am going to have to check with my carrier to see how this would work for me if I need to move to a backup iPhone. A few years back I dropped, and killed my iPhone to a point it would not power up. I was lucky in that I still had my previous iPhone so all I did was pop out the SIM, and move it to my old iPhone. I was back up and running until I could get my newer iPhone repaired. Need to see how hard this is going to be if I have a new iPhone that only supports eSIM. Is there a KISS way to move my phone number/eSIM to a backup iPhone? After some review it is looking like I may be moving away from the iPhone product line if I can not purchase one with a SIM card tray. Looking like no easy way to move from device to another device should it die. This is a deal breaker. At least I am going to get a USB type C port. For now sticking with my iPhone 11 Pro with A13 154.9 GFLOPS supercomputer in my pocket until Apple comes out with an iPhone that has SIM tray, and a USB Type C connector that I hope is either USB4 40, or USB4 80.
