The New Kia EV6 First Drive - Is it better than Hyundai IONIQ 5?

2 жыл бұрынToday, we are finally testing driving the New Kia EV6 for the 1st time, Kia’s New EV. It is a tough question, but through this first drive, I am going to answer whether I do like Kia EV6 better or Hyundai IONIQ 5 better, so stay tuned until the end. The Kia EV6 is Kia’s all-new EV car based on the all-new E-GMP platform, which is, of course, share with Hyundai IONIQ 5. Our test car came with dual-motor system (Long-Range) producing 239kW and 605Nm of torque. So, now let’s go out and drive the Kia EV6 and see if it is better than other EV cars, especially Hyundai IONIQ 5.

When I first saw the Ioniq 5 I didn't think I'd see a nicer looking car this year, but here we are. The EV6 in the matte finish is simply stunning.

@dexben23yeah, well from what I’ve Heard they are bringing like 9 evs To the u.s. by 2025 so there will be plenty to choose from, don’t forget about Toyota and Nissan too.

One of my family members is one of the first to reserve the 1st Edition EV6, he is seriously impressed with the styling and is a life-long California Toyota owner with owning 4 generations of the Prius. He was hoping Toyota and other Japanese marques would be among the greatest of innovators in clean energy and zero-emissions in this age but fell out of favor and decided to make his bets in the Korean EV industry. I have told him car brands like Hyundai and Kia have become serious competitors to the big 3 Japanese automakers and I'm glad he has made the decision to go with the EV6. I cannot wait for him to lend it to me on occasions as I already been in many Hyundai/KIA products before, always coming out impressed and in someways prefer them over Toyota, Nissan and Honda.

I've pre-order an ioniq 5 dual motor in Australia Brisbane. After seeing your review I still prefer the 5 over ev6 mainly due to looks. Good reviews keep em coming 👍

Interior styling goes to the Kia. Exterior styling and taller height goes to the Hyundai. My choice is the Ioniq 5 but I will also consider the VW ID.4 next spring.

@@bassistdc Rapid charging, features & self-driving is miles beyond the ID4. Although I do like the look of the iD4, as well. But overall out of the 3...I'd go w/ the EV6 imo.

Same here!! I'm thinking of purchasing ev6 because sunroof and interior design! I personally like the rotate gear change rather than the stick in i5. I also like the curved black screen rather than i5 flat white screen.

@@leonkung4270 I didn't end up buying it after a 24 hour test drive... Little niggly things that bothered me. Sun visor is massive and awkward for my personal seating position, when totally down, totally blocks the window, depends in your own personal height of course but even an inch down feels unusual and close to my 5 feet 8 head. Hands, when they move on the steering wheel sound like sandpaper and would get annoying. I heard this on one review and it started to annoy me. Having to turn off the lane keep assist every time I get in it. It doesn't accept my old ipod nano and defaults to radio instead of my phone Bluetooth every time I get in but the salesman suggested this may change when you've set up your personal profile. Steering wheel in my preferred position blocks half the videos of blind spots when indicating, very narrow aperture through the wheel. Drinks tin rattles in cup holder as the grippers are cheap quality hard plastic, not rubber. Someone mentioned accidentally hitting the heated/cooled seat buttons and I did too. Several times I got a cold bum. Outside noise through either windows or door seals Cruise was over complicated and fiddly and when closing in on cars, the braking was quite harsh imo. Deal breakers... Having the car immobilised with the low battery (12v) warning in the dash twice. Will probably be sorted but not prepared to take the chance at a £53k price point Harsh suspension, made my girlfriend feel queezy at higher speeds and quite jolty when you hit a sunken manhole. That door/window noise above 60, I really thought the door wasn't shut properly at one point when the tyres went over a wet white line. This is very personal but when walking back to it from the shop it just looked from a distance like any other suv which really disappointed me. My Jaguar xj is 11 years old and worth no more than £12k tops but feels so smooth and luxurious so think I'll wait and see what else may appear in the future. You may say don't compare to that but I feel this EV6 isn't worth £40k more than mine, especially when I don't do big mileages in it anyway. I've left out the good stuff that other reviewers mentioned as there's no point, you already know. It really is a lovely car but just not for me at this time so got my deposit back. I'm deffo going for BEV when I buy my next car though .

I really like the EV6 but still think the Ionic 5 is such a unique design.The EV 6 has a similar look to some other EVs out there which is something that you wouldn't say about the Hyundai.Lets hope Hyundai one day they make an N version of the Ionic 5 which would in my opinion be the dogs.

Thanks for another great drive test. I'm still waiting for my yacht blue LR 4WD GT-line EV6 with Meridian sound system, trailer hitch and extra set of snow tires. Hope to get it soon, estimated delivery in Norway is middle of Q4. Wish it was only $ 49k, but here I have to add another $ 13k before I get the EV6 I want.

Hey Charlie, I have a reservation for an Ioniq5 in Canada. If I can't make a deal, I'd be content with an EV6 instead. For me, I like both vehicles equally in terms of design. Seems like deliveries of the IONIQ5 will be early 2022 with the EV6 being later. Meanwhile, my 2021 Kona EV is great but finding it too small (difficult for me to get in/out of the driver's seat).

Nice review, I think I am leaning towards the EV 6 over the Ioniq 5 as well. In Canada they have mandated that EV's have to make some sound so I imagine that we won't be able to turn the sound completely off. Also, the voice commands will probably be in English and French in Canada but I hope they leave the Korean voice commands as an option - my daughter speaks Korean so she might get some entertainment value from that.

I have noticed that there is a lot of confusion about the roof racks for EV6. Some people say that there are no roof racks available now or perhaps ever. Some people say that since the roof load is specified, roof racks are definitely coming at some point. The confusion seems to extend to the importer / dealer levels as well since the information about this depends on who you ask. It would be really important to know this for sure, as roof racks are crucial to so many potential buyers. Does anybody known anything about this or does someone have contact information for a source that can answer this question?

Drove the Ioniq 5 P45 car at the UK press launch, it was heavy and lacked any real get up and go. OK as a family cruiser but nothing more. I suspect the standard EV6's will be similar. I now have the EV6 GT on order and hoping for so much more 🤞

@@AsianPetrolhead No, it was the AWD P45 model with full spec, and was in Sport mode. It did just not have the pick up speed and agility of a Tesla 3 AWD and I am no fan of Teslas

Great video as always Charlie!! I am wondering when a EV manufacturer will come up with almost bezel-less screens, like we have in phones/tablets. Those chunky bezels without any functionality look very cheap. IMO, model 3/Y screen is the best among all EVs.

The range on all of Tesla's EPA ratings is overestimated. A journalist's 300mi rated Model 3 can only run just over 200mi on road trips (no harsh acceleration etc). Curious how much quieter the Ioniq 5 is. I tested both Model Y and VW ID4 RWD, model Y has double panel windows up front, and VW only has regular glass on the side window. But ID4 is much quieter in all circumstances.

Great overview Charlie. I agree there is limited benefit to those digital side mirrors, they are not very sleek and I expect aerodynamic improvement over mirrors is likely nominal. The real world range may match Tesla, as Kia and Hyundai estimates are more conservative from what I've heard, many drivers exceed rated range under ideal conditions, Tesla not so much! I'm surprised you preferred the Kia, I thought from earlier videos you found the Hyundai to be a better looking and more comfortable car, I don't think you can go wrong either way!

I like it, although I thought the 0-60 was going to be faster in the EV6 GT (under 4 seconds) but still looks like a great vehicle. I'm curious to see how you like the GV60 when you get a chance to drive it and how it'll compare. Great video!

Thank you for the excellent quality, non-biased and professional work. I have not seen the EV6 colors in person. I have a preorder and my color choices are white, grey and yellow. I understand there is an element of personal preference, but which color was the best in your opinion?

Great job Charlie, gotta say I prefer the Kia EV6 over the just debuted GV60. Like the styling more, the interior layout and controls, just wish they kept the three spoke steering wheel like the Genesis G70/GV70. Also prefer the new Rims on the Genesis GV60. When I trade in my G70 at the end of the lease this is likely the car to replace it. Looking forward to pricing release in Canada. I know the fit and finish will be top notch, I can’t say the same of Tesla which is why I never pulled the trigger on a Model 3 or any of the Tesla products. Looking forward to your GV60 review!

Thank you, Chalie, for this review. My choice definitely goes to the Kia EV6. The Hyundai has a too discriminating design and its aerodynamics do not seem too compatible with autonomy. Moreover, what difference in consumption between EV6 and Ioniq 5?
