Your knowledge base on all these types of lenses is incredible 👏 I have followed you for a couple years now and I've always appreciated your deep influences of photography, which convinced me to buy gear and get into photography myself. But unfortunately time got away from me when I got diagnosed with cancer and now all I do is spend every minute with my daughter, my little twin because life is short and never promised 💔 Born and raised in Chicago in Logan Square, I take time with my daughter and show her all the beauty of Chicago and try my best to build as much memories of us together ❤️ I thought of doing a photo shoot or video of some sort of us but never took the next steps to learn. Hopefully one day! 🙏 Thank you for devoting your time and sharing your knowledge and experiences to the world 🌎 Blessings to you brother 🙏

Nikon seems to have made their f/1.8 S lenses as good at the f/1.4 G lenses, fulfilling your "small size with great quality" wish. It's likely that the next expensive (over $2k) Z lens will be the 35mm f/1.2, but that will be as big as the 50mm and 85mm f/1.2 lenses. I think you'll get your lens when Nikon uses the Tamron design for it, or lets Tamron make those Z lenses.

I think the thing with the Canon RF f/1.2L glass (50mm and 85mm) is that they have some really hefty glass inside and some of that is moving while focusing. Canon has a better focusing system already (Nano USM) that they use in other lenses, but for those two, I think the focusing element(s?) are just so big that they had to use the older conventional USM focus motors. The RF 24-70 f/2.8L focuses much faster and quieter than the 50mm prime, but its aperture just isn't as big.

Thank you Manny for that insightful, and thought through preview of this lens. I think you made some excellent observations and comparisons and did justice to both Nikon and Canon on this one. I am a Nikon guy and have been for over 30 years, and am admittedly biased (a little - I try to stay objective). I think this Nikon lens will be spectacular and I already pre-ordered my copy from NPS this morning. In general, I like that Nikon takes care to go the extra mile with their optics: controlled focus breathing (in the lens - not the body like Sony), more aperture blades (this is subtle, but I think it the right direction for a lens of this type and price), kept the weight down and maintained a great balance in the hands, and kept the lens more silent - the Z lenses are doing the best job of providing high end pro lenses for both stills and video of the three big manufacturers in my opinion - and I have used the Canon system as well. This new Nikon 85mm 1.2 s lens is a shining example of this fact. That said, there are no flies on the Canon version of this lens, and I have no doubt that as a portrait and wedding shooting either would crush the job. Thanks again for your down to earth, common sense approach. -PD

Thanks Manny for it! What about focus breathing? My strenght are parades and there were many reason for chosing Z system for it. Sealed body (For heavy rain and salty air), no overheating issues (I do video 4K with Z9 and Z6II), no focus breathing is somelike key cause I compose close and away within 2 shots simultaneasly, Balanced system (no injuries on arm). All this at extreme low light conditions where I use ISo 2000 to 12500. Thousands of people pass through me and my focussing accuraccy is higher than 90%. A whole month of february at full action. Was imposible to to this with R5 and R6, they just shut down. So everytime I hear complain on Nikon, my experience as a professional photographer differs like you say.

According to Ricci Talks and Adorama this lens has no focus breathing. This is also important if you want to stack several images together with focus stacking. Thanks for your feedback. We need more people like you and not some KZfaq guys that work mainly with Canon and Sony gear and have no experience with Nikon at all. By the way: Is the Canon R5 still overheating? This was a main issue with that camera on video recording. Just see how Canon has fixed this with the additional R5C model by applying a huge fan with lot of ventilation holes on the body.

Nikon really needs to reset people's expectations for good imaging equipment. For the past 3-5 years, there has been a singular focus on eye-AF (pun intended). Nikon images look great sooc, so any post work is enhancing rather than 'fixing'. Nikon photographers talk about 'color science' less than C/S because we have to worry about it less. Ergonomically and operationally, these cameras simply work. And the lenses...

Great review. I would love your opinion comparing 105mm 1.4 to the 85 mm 1.2 Nikon. I would also love your opinion waiting for 135 1.8 on the roadmap. I love bokeh and the 105 is magical (like the 200 f2). I also love the look of compression. So I’m wondering if you would wait for 135? Do you think the 85mm 1.2 has a more clinical feel than 105 1.4 f mount Nikon? I really respect your opinion and I watched your previous video that compared similar lenses in the past so I would love your opinion based on the above criteria on this lens it’s a very expensive option and I am professional portrait photographer, so I would love this lens, but I would like to invest wisely. Thanks for your perceptive review.

Your getting eyelash AF because you are using auto area plus auto subject detection, select human and 3D tracking and you will be good to go. 3D is better at depth when using eye detection. It's not a bash its something I have noticed while using my Z9 trying to shoot erratic children lol.

Good Documentary - think that with further F/ware updates on Z cameras may improve operation between Z Camera and Z lens - only think that Z9 will be really enhanced for this lens and its 2nd Gen AF. Fingers cross for Nikon to pull its socks up and Get Z7 III / Z8, Z6 III and a Z70 (R7 rival) out of the door in 2023.

Speaking of 85mm, for Fuji shooters... GF 110mm f/2 is the ONE!! For Fuji X, well everyone is lusting on the new Viltrox 75mm f/1.2!! 🥵

But I do love how these wide open lenses look. My fave lenses of all time was the Canon 85 1.2L Plus I also had the 200mm f2.0L. Alas not needed in the studio

So glad I got rid of all me new gear envy years ago! I make fantastically easy crazy money doing studio portraits with the exact same camera and lens for the last 7 years! Canon 1DX original and 24-105 f4. That's all I need. Money pours in a nd people gush all over the image quality even thou its only 18MP sensor. Absolutely no need for an upgrade.

Thank you for addressing, with such candour, whether it's worth buying 85mm f/1.2 over 85mm f/1.8. By the way, may I know what devices you had on your Z9 in this video?
