A big update to Vienna Symphonic Library's Synchron flagship instrument, Synchron Strings, comes with a wealth of newly captured articulations in a "Pro" version. With the lovely sample set recorded on the Synchron Stage and vast array of mixing controls thanks to the many microphone option, Synchron Strings Pro has me wondering . . . Is this the new King of Strings?

It is the sales game. They are all pretty good in some stuff and not so in others. If there are some libraries that are good in most then they leave you short with articulations with dynamic layers, etc... That way the can get you hooked and then offer you more in another package. Another tactic is they sell their poor QC on recorded performances on some notes in some articulations realism, etc as realism. You get the authentic mistake of the player. Hear is how that pans out though. Spitfire BBCSO contrabass staccato round robin note #4 out of 5 on G#1 (this is from memory. Note may be off a bit) there is a distinctive click of the play hitting the his bow on the wood. Hey authentic!. Except when you wrote 1/8 note repeating rhythm. Then you get ever 4th note out of 5 totally audible click. It makes the ear think the accent is there. A composer does not want that. We have to now get around by 1. change note (key) or 2. use spicatto instead or 3. turn off round robin (yuck worse than the click) or 4 extra work to use EQ to reduce it to barely audible. We have some Big Bang Orchestra and it holds suit. Some notes are dead dynamically so you play a scale that contains the dead (quiet) note and you get f, f, f, p, f, f, f. Of course there are work arounds but instead selling those as marketing ploys, lets fix them so it is consistent. I imagine this library has its share of missed quality checks. As this reviewer points out in the TUTTI is lacking compared. It's ok just go buy the real tutti library.

Hi Mark, I'm not sure I got it right, but if there are issues with one of our libraries, please send us a mail via support@vsl.co.at and we'll look into this and if not already fixed we'll release a library update asap that fixes the issue! Best, Ben

@@amotkram99 You can change this behavior on Windows 10 by going to the old control panel -> Sound -> Playback -> Right click on the correct speaker -> properties -> Advanced. Disable "Allow applications to take exclusive control" as well as "Enable audio enhancements". Now in the Synchron Player choose the audio playback device, I recommend to set it to "Windows Audio:..." and lower the latency if necassary. If you don't find the settings, feel free to contact me via the support email address and I'll send you a few screenshots.

@@amotkram99 sounds like a good idea. Actually, would love to see a proper full music notation program integrated n built inside of a DAW. Not sure why DAWs were never built for music composition with sheet music, other than composing in boxes in a daw. I combine my music notation program to my daw, but its not the same. Some daws have sheet music notation one can use, but its not like a full notation program. Maybe this exists already, but I haven't seen the two be fully integrated n built as one.

@@mountainorchestra6254 Just listen to the first few seconds of this video. It sounds like a 1980s synth. The violins from 4:12-4:35 are similar. It could just be one really awful articulation. @@Galindoi Some moments in some articulations it could be. Agree with you 4:20 bad leg jump. But in general, violins cannot be called synthetic. You just need to clarify where and what exactly. And if I go through other flagship libraries, I can dig up so much that I blame them not only for synthetics, but for the fact that the musicians who took part in the recording are dropouts and laymen. we all have technical flaws. But in your opinion, is there a better string library and which one?
@Galindoi
@Galindoi 2 жыл бұрын
@@mountainorchestra6254 Sure, there could be some "user error" happening in the video. We all know you have to finesse samples to get them to sound good. There's no perfect library. If I had to name a "best bang for your buck," it'd probably be BBCSO Pro. On sale, it's cheaper. It has a full orchestra. If you EQ the horrible rosin hiss out, it has that dreamy sound from all the old crooner records. Admittedly, it's used for something different than this. It's not really a Hollywood blockbuster sound, but people making Hollywood blockbusters don't really use libraries, so...

I don't see the love... IN fact, my ears can rarely detect much difference between any of the flagship libraries. I use Spitfire Symphony, a friend uses Berlin Strings... To my ears, they sound identical. I also have Spitfire Studio, and Cinematic Studio Strings - and they sound pretty much the same too. If you ask me, this is all about marketing and getting people to buy things they don't need.
@nolongerinuse488
@nolongerinuse488 2 жыл бұрын
Do you have standard packs in Spitfire? I personally, hear the difference. Plus, Spitfire has too much damn swelling that I can’t get rid of. Likewise, a few composer friends of mine have the same complaints. Looking to have a full sound with attack but not necessarily an artificial sound. I find that Spitfire can’t provide that for me. Unless you would have time to tell me how to change the sound to what I’m describing? Cause that would definitely be appreciated. Although, it seems like I’m gonna impulse buy this anyway LOL but I would still like to learn more from Spitfire, should I be able to change it. (I must note that what I have is a free version. I am unsure if there were parts that you bought from Spitfire)

@@nolongerinuse488 what free products are you using from spitfire? To my knowledge there isn’t many they offer for free, other than the very lite version of BBC orchestra and the labs.
@landonp629
@landonp629 2 жыл бұрын
@@nolongerinuse488 I would like to add that given you said you have the free spitfire product, I’m going to assume it’s BBC symphony orchestra light edition. That library is not representative of anything spitfire offers professionally. It basically makes up about 300mb of a 70gig real BBC orchestral library, and even the BBC library isn’t their best IMHO. I own all the Albion series titles, as well as all the symphony series titles - woodwinds, strings, and brass. I also own chamber strings, and the contemporary and British drama toolkits. All total I probably have around $5000 worth or spitfire libraries, and I think they are close to, if not the best, libraries I have ever tried. I also own all the metro arks from orchestral tools, inspire 1 and 2, as well as time micro and macro. They sound great as well, and I used the, before investing in spitfire. I still use some of the instruments from these packs to supplement what is missing in spitfire, like good harps and tuned percussion. Basically, at one point or another I have owned libraries from spitfire to orchestral tools to VSL, Amadeus symphony orchestra, all the way down to the very first library I bought - miraslav philharmonic, which how sounds like dog crap. In all these years, spitfire sounds really good to my ears - and I like the way the libraries all work together in the series’. But in reality, playing the mid strings from ark 1 really doesn’t sound too different from the strings in Albion one. And when it comes to the symphony series - I can discern little to no difference between spitfire symphonic and orchestral tools Berlin series.

@mache3984 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidkozin I am not. I've been producing for 12 years though. This is just my personal opinion. My assessment may be harsh, but virtual instruments large in part are extremely overpriced. I honestly think that if companies would start to adopt a system like splice (with subscriptions where you actually pay off the instrument and "own" it) that they would get much more business and have long lasting customers. I can literally pick up my subscription where I left off from splice say if I decide I don't want to use it for how ever long I want. Once I decide to reactivate my subscription, I just continue paying where I left off until it's paid off. Wonderful model. This also keep you from throwing spaghetti at the wall and praying that something sticks. Right now in such a horrible economy with peoples businesses tanking, people being out of jobs, etc it's quite laughable to expect someone to fork out $600 when there are far better options. Again, this is just my personal opinion. Symphonic Orchestra platinum has brass, strings, woodwinds and percussion with every articulation imaginable just about.

@@mache3984 - I appreciate your reply. I have discussed this issue with others, and have heard good answers on each side. I am a violinist, but not professionally, but I would spend $5000 on a bow that resonated just simpatico with my violin, and if It felt like an extension of my body controlling the articulations with perfect balance, I doubt most people would hear the difference, but I know a decent violinist would. And, musicians are underpaid (this includes composers, while stock songs that take 2 hours to make by sticking elements together) and if owning a great string library that handles what I want why spend another $1000 for a Part I of a new Library, then need $1000 for part II to get the advanced articulation that I would need... I bought Serum via Splice and Sylenth1 paying per month. I have had Composer’s Cloud. I tested everything symphonic and own the special editions of VSL. I have to say, with the discount, the Standard version of this library for $300 dollars is a steal. If you have a string passage in any of your pieces I would be happy to see if the library would improve it using my experience with strings. It is a product worth learning as an Instrument, and I play it like one. Send me an email at david@davidkozin.com and I would be interested in a little challenge and being creative. In summary, I appreciate the different sides of the $ and time views, and my degree is in the psychology of perception, so I also can understand that a library can literally sound differently based on not only our physical senses but our bias and expectations in the perception of those signals. I appreciate your answer. I’m not trying to sell them, but out of all of VSL products, and I really think can do a lot and the sound can really be outstanding. Either way, best wishes!
