Years after the popular sketch comedy show ROWAN AND MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN ended in 1973, producer George Schlatter decided it was time for a comeback. He created THE NEW LAUGH-IN in 1977 and introduced a brand new cast of comedians, the most notable being Robin Williams just one year before his big break on the ABC sitcom MORK AND MINDY.
"Robin Williams was not just a comedian. He was not just a performer, intellectual or a philosopher. He was an event. Totally and completely unique. There’s never been anyone like him nor will there ever be," said Schlatter.
Other regular cast members include Ben Powers, Ed Bluestone, Lenny Schultz, Bill Rafferty, Wayland Flowers and his puppet, Madame, and June Gable. The show had the same fast-paced zingers as the original, along with classic bits such as "Sock It To Me" and "Laugh-In Looks At The News." The show only ran 6 episodes, but NBC reran the series in 1979 after Williams's rise in popularity. This first episode of THE NEW LAUGH-IN guest stars iconic Hollywood actress Bette Davis, with a few brief cameos from Henry Winkler. #thenewlaughin #laughin #robinwilliams #70s #classiccomedy #legacycomedy #sketchcomedy #70stv "

It was Cancelled Because Dan Rowan and Dick Martin Sued George Schlatter for Copyright for using their show without permission, as they did the show first and they came up with the original concept, That's why none of the original Laugh In cast were told it was even happening, let alone were asked to do it.

Even more ironically, NBC's show was originally just called Saturday Night, because ABC already had a show called Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell whose cast members included future NBC SNL cast members Christopher Guest, Bill Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray and Billy Crystal -- and Howard himself wound up hosting NBC's SNL after ABC's SNL went off the air! Explaining to people that this is not the Rowan & Martin Laugh-In show is simplicity in comparison to the SNL chaos!

Realize the late 1970's for NBC was dud after dud after dud though it had hits like Quincy, Little House on the Prairie and The Rockford Files going on in 1977. For one thing I never knew there was a reboot of Laugh-In, but the times were different in '77 compared to 1968-73 during the show's original and now classic run. Despite Robin Williams (RIP and laughs), who George Schlatter perfectly called his rising star and the likes of future game show host Bill Rafferty and the outrageous Wayland and Madame, it didn't fit in.
@bobpierce115
@bobpierce115 26 күн бұрын
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Although yes, this is equally the '70s, it was (if not drastically), a very different section of the decade where it was past a time 'Laugh-In' would have worked. Indeed, truthfully, the show was pretty poor by the '72-'73 season. It was lower budget, didn't have all of the "whiz-bang" stuff that made it so much fun from 1968-'72, meaning the '71-'72 season. That should have been the last one, but wasn't. 1972 was the real fade-out year of the '60s. The ending of Vietnam War, the ending of the post-World War II economy, the end of the weekly (1936-'72) LIFE magazine. The last year before the Watergate mess, OPEC, stagflation. So 1973 was really the first year of "The '70s" that no longer had ties to the '60s; the era that propelled Laugh-In. The changes from that era accelerated further at mid-decade, so by 1977, Laugh-In really didn't have much of a shot of ever working again. I think it was kind of fun (at the time) to see the attempt done, even if it didn't work. With 1977 being 47 years ago, these shows have an old-fashioned nostalgic fun of simply being from so long ago now, that that kind of transcends the awkwardness of the short-lived series. They are what they are, with no magic wand to ever make them "great" shows, but a curious 'what if?' from a completely bygone era.

Yes, producer George Schlatter definitely was ahead of his time with the fast-paced editing and quick bits. If this makes you dizzy, you should try Turn-On. It was the only show to be cancelled before it premiered on the west coast.

Not bad, but whatever Ruth Buzzi and Arte Johnson would have asked for to come back, they should have doubled it! Outside of of Robin Williams I've only heard of two of these people and one of them ended up a gameshow host!

Read the books ,saw the theatre show,the TV show the film, heard the radio series and the audio books read by Stephen Moore. So in terms of an author's work it's equal in my life to Tolkien, only funnier.

Anything branded with the prefix or epithet “New” or “The New” rarely works, or at least equals, let alone tops the original. It’s almost a poisoned chalice. It will be inevitably compared with the original. The New Phil Silvers’ Show, The New Andy Griffith Show, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, The New Laugh-In, etc. People generally only (fondly) remember the originals. Interesting and intriguing upload though, and it’s not bad by any means.

@bobpierce115
@bobpierce115 26 күн бұрын
Well yes. It was a product of the late '60s-early '70s which was a drastically different era to begin with. You had all of the perfect elements coming together, naturally on the '68-'73 series. Laugh-In had run out of gas by 1973 anyway, and 1977 was very different from even '73-'74. You can't beat Rowan & Martin, Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Jo Anne Worley, Judy Carne and more. It was magical; made in that time, for that time. This was a hot mess, and was quickly cancelled. So was 'The Sonny & Cher' Show with them as a divorced couple trying to recapture the magic of the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour from the early section of the decade. Didn't work either, for different reasons and some that probably overlapped as well.

@bobpierce115
@bobpierce115 17 күн бұрын
@@joejoe9435 I totally agree with you. It was those (original) stars at that time and era the show was produced in. Although it was on from 1968-'73, 1971-'72 was the last season with the '60s vibe. The final '72-'73 season that era had already passed, and the fun was gone. It had run out of gas. Whoever thought the concept would work again (originating) in the late '70s was very mistaken, obviously. There was no Rowan & Martin, and the very name 'Laugh-In' itself was very dated.

Just when you think that it is could not get anymore insane? They had to go and take it to a whole new level. Then they went beyond it into a whole new dimension of insanity. It is hilariously funny, not as good as the original. However still it is worth taking a look at.

I read about this revival of Laugh-In for years and have always wanted to see it. It’s alright but not up to the original. I can see George recycled some of his ideas from his 1969 series Turn On, like the executioners last request sketch, and the cartoon characters carrying one-liners across the screen.
