The Little Mermaid Movie Description:
The youngest of King Triton's daughters, Ariel is a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Longing to find out more about the world beyond the sea, Ariel visits the surface and falls for the dashing Prince Eric. Following her heart, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to experience life on land.
The Little Mermaid is a 2023 American musical romantic fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall from a screenplay written by David Magee. Co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Lucamar Productions, and Marc Platt Productions, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1989 animated film of the same name, itself loosely based on the 1837 fairy tale of the same title by Hans Christian Andersen. The film stars singer Halle Bailey in the titular role, alongside Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy. The Little Mermaid follows a mermaid princess Ariel who is fascinated with the human world and makes a deal with a treacherous sea witch Ursula to trade her voice for human legs to impress Prince Eric, whom she saved from a shipwreck before time runs out.
Plans for a remake of 1989's The Little Mermaid were confirmed in May 2016. In December 2017, Disney announced Marshall was being courted to direct the film. Bailey, Hauer-King, McCarthy, Bardem, Diggs, Tremblay, Awkwafina, and the rest of the cast signed on between July to November 2019. Production was expected to begin in London between late March and early April 2020 but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming ultimately took place primarily at Pinewood Studios in England and on the island of Sardinia, Italy, from January to July 2021. Composer Alan Menken, who worked on the original film's soundtrack, returned to compose the score and write new songs alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, who serves as a producer with Platt, John DeLuca and Marshall. The film is dedicated to the late Howard Ashman, who co-produced and co-wrote the songs from the original film.
The Little Mermaid premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on May 8, 2023,[7] and was released in the United States on May 26. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of the cast and the musical sequences but criticized the visual effects and character designs. The film has grossed over $569 million worldwide against a total production budget of $250 million, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2023. Amongst Disney's live-action remakes, the film is the second-most-expensive and seventh-highest-grossing readaptation to date.

My 14 year old son and I watched the remake as well and we too, thought at times that Ariel's head looked too big for her body. It still ended up being a great movie though! I couldn't imagine how challenging it is to create a movie that is mostly or even partly underwater.

@@gionnijohnson408And boyyyyy, is it DIFFERENT than the Disney adaptations! 😂 In the Disney movie, Ariel marries Eric and the two live happily ever after. In Andersen's fairy tale, the Little Mermaid takes the knife and agrees to kill the prince. But when she tries to do it, she finds that she can't kill him, and instead, she sacrifices herself to save his life and turns into sea foam. Oh and not to mention, Ursula's spell made Ariel walking on her feet incredibly painful, as if she was walking on knives. The original story is wayyy dark.

I don't know if anyone's said it yet, but this was actually Melissa McCarthy singing. She had sung in the past, but took extra vocal lessons for Poor Unfortunate Souls. Everyone in this cast is actually singing their own songs (and there's also a cut song of Javier Bardem doing a Triton song, but that was eventually cut from the movie)

Ariel’s not the only person who needed to listen, I know there wouldn’t be much of a movie otherwise, but had Triton tried to understand Ariel’s curiosity about the human world even though his feelings about his wife’s death are valid, she wouldn’t have been vulnerable to Ursula.

And then she did the same thing with her daughter too. But in a way that's realistic because so many people think they'll do better than their own parents/be a better parent and end up making the same or similar mistakes by parenting the same way or going the complete opposite. In many cases both sets (current and past generation) love their children in their own way but went about certain things the wrong way.

The stage show version touched on this. Triton gets a song while he's looking for her about how he recognizes this is 100% his fault and when he finds her he's going to sit down and actually listen to her to talk about what she wants and needs. It's why at the end he doesn't even hesitate to make her human, because he recognizes that she needs to choose the life SHE wants. I love the new movie and the original, but the stage show is hands down my favorite version.

I don't have a problem with Ariel defeating Ursula in theory but the cute thing in the original is that they saved each other. Ariel saves Eric at the start of the film and Eric saves Ariel at the end they saved each other because they are equals. And Eric being the one to defeat Ursula makes Triton's change of heart about humans make more sense.

40:20 In mythology, as far back as ancient Greece, mermaids were often of an evolution of sirens, using their voices to lead sailors into disaster, but with fish bodies instead of bird bodies. I always liked how the Disney movie referenced that by making Ariel's voice kind of hypnotic. In fact, in spanish there is no word for mermaid, both mythological creatures are called Sirens. The spanish title for this story? "La Sirenita" which translates to "The Little Siren".

They actually gave Ursula two extra tentacles in this. She was originally a squid person (they reference it with the squidling rivalry line) so I think that’s why she used them more this time around so we had time to notice. The likely changed it because everyone always mistook her for an octopus hybrid instead of squid

If Ursula had only six tenticles in the original, how was she a squid? I though a squid had two more tentacles than an octopus, not two less..(Stricktly speaking i think an octopus only has arms and no tenticles, while a squid has eight arms and two tenticles) I think the reason for her only having six arms in the original was so she'd be easier to animate, and we're ment to count her actual arms with her octopus arms, which then would be eight. While that not being the case in the remake.

Bro, all the SpongeBob edits had me dying. 😂😂😂 I agree, this movie was really good, particularly the love story. I think Halle did far better than okay. She was wonderful, seeing as most of her work has to be done without words. I think some of the CGI can be weird, but was mostly well done, especially in IMAX. But I also try to remember that our first movie with predominantly CGI underwater visuals was Aquaman 5 years ago and this is a step up from that. We still have time to perfect it. Your analysis on how the industry works is spot on and most people can’t see that, because it doesn’t really fall in line with what they want. I’ve had debates about it.

Every movie now has lazy CGI. It’s so frustrating. And yes, live action remakes are also lazy and out of control. Having said that, Halle Bailey is a good Ariel, coming from a guy who had the hots for the original Ariel growing up and the casting overall is interesting. But Disney is out of ideas. I’m not going to blame Halle Bailey, a talented actress and singer, for that. If I was 7 like I was when the original came out, I’d feel the same way about this that I did about the cartoon. So I'm a black woman (born in '86), I saw the re-release of the original in the cinemas here in London UK when I turned 6 (it was actually the first film I'd ever seen at the cinema). I cried loads of happy tears at the end. As there were no black Disney princesses at the time (and even for years after that), I would play "make believe" and wear a long red jumper on my head to pretend I was Ariel. In 2018 I started my loc journey, and then THIS remake comes along, and I discover that this Ariel is black AND has hair that incorporates locs. Mine are now mid-back length. Talk about full circle!!

Of course it looks different from the animated version. This is a live action movie aimed at adults, not kids. So the crab is gonna look like a crab. The fish is gonna look like a fish. But they still talk. And Ariel's hair is still red, it's just more natural instead of the vibrant tone from the animation. Furthermore, Scuttle is portrayed as a female northern gannet diving bird (not a male seagull) because they are able to breathe underwater for a short period of time. Ursula's look and behaviour in the animated film was inspired by an American drag queen called Divine. To prepare for her role as Ursula, Melissa McCarthy actually consulted with the drag queen community. One fun little detail is when Ursula is creating the potion to become Vanessa and the main ingredient is a bottle shaped like a human stomach. This is a play on the phrase "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach". Many people miss the fact that Ursula and Triton are siblings in this version. Triton had banished Ursula from his kingdom and disowned her for practicing black magic, which is what motivates her actions. It was cut from the animation but was included in the 2007 Broadway musical. Ariel and her sisters have the same mum but they represent the seven seas which is why each of them are a different race. Regarding the opening quote: Throughout the film Ariel cannot produce tears, even when she's sad and/or crying, UNTIL she becomes a human. Scuttle's "Has Ariel killed the prince yet?" is most likely referencing the original fairy tale, in which the nameless mermaid is destined to turn into sea foam and die after the prince marries another woman. The mermaid's sisters tell her that the only way she can escape this fate is if she kills the prince with an enchanted dagger. However, the mermaid can't go through with it and instead accepts her death. Ariel 'signed' the contract by giving Ursula a scale from her mermaid tail, which actually covers up a plot hole from the animation where she literally signs it with a quill pen. Since she could clearly read and write English, why didn't she just explain herself by writing it down? There's a big chance Eric wouldn't have believed her but it's worth a try right?I Ariel is given 3 days to kiss Eric and make him fall in love with her so she can remain human permanently. Ursula cheats 3 times to keep Ariel from being able to do just that. First, she secretly puts a memory spell on Ariel so she won't remember she needs Eric's kiss to stay human, and every time she is reminded she forgets immediately or falls asleep (that wasn't in the animation). Second, she sends her pet eels to prevent Ariel and Eric from kissing at the end of Kiss the Girl. Finally, she transforms herself into a human with Ariel's voice to trick Eric into marrying her. They changed the dingelhopper scene to include Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel in the animation. She is the lady who gives Ariel the dinglehopper in the market. It's a symbolism of her passing the torch to Halle. Regarding the colours in the sea, someone said it's supposed to look all dark and gloomy from Ariel's perspective because that's how she sees it, which honestly makes sense. I loved the way Eric points out the star constellations to Ariel (which as a sailor he knows well) and starts guessing her name. It was such a beautiful improvement from the animated version where Sebastian just whispered her name to Eric. It added so much depth and charm to the scene. I like that Eric's character arch is more than just being the prince Ariel falls in love with. He has a backstory and a family. He, like Ariel, has a parent who believes they know what is best for their child. Eric being adopted is supposed to highlight the fact that he feels like he doesn't belong. Much like Ariel, he feels there is so much more to explore and discover, only the other way around. They share a bond over their love for collecting treasures. I really like how they fleshed out their romance more and actually showed they had a connection, instead of just 'love at first sight' and physical attraction. It also helped a lot that Halle and Jonah had an insane amount of chemistry. They also made it a lot clearer in this version that Ariel didn't want to become a human just for Eric. She was already interested and curious of life on land BEFORE she met him. Her motivations were rooted in her not fitting in and wanting to explore. She would have gone up one way or another, she just happened to have met Eric along the way. I think that’s why they added the bit about her not remembering to kiss Eric. They didn’t want the whole premise of her giving up her voice to be about chasing a guy, rather, about her chasing her dreams. Triton destroying her belongings was always the catalyst for her going to Ursula, not Eric in itself. They still kept the romance, it didn't take anything away from it. Some people have a problem with Ariel killing Ursula instead of Eric as if it takes anything away from his character. He literally saved Ariel's life when Ursula was about to kill her by throwing the harpoon. He also saved Max. Ariel may have given him a little nudge but he was almost there anyways. And even so, it still speaks to Eric's character. Just like he didn't save Ariel in exhange for her saving him. He saved her because he loved her, and more importantly because he's a decent person. Ursula trying to kill Eric made so much more sense because she didn't care about Eric, it was about hurting Ariel. I wasn't sure about Javier Bardem's portrayal of King Triton at first, but the more I think about it the more I like it. In the animation he clearly had some anger issues, and while that is understandable, he doesn't have to be all screaming and intimidating to have an impact. He looks and sounds more disappointed and scared here rather than angry, which is not only a lot more respectable but also a lot more believable. He feels more like a worried father than just some big scary dude with an anger management problem. As for the acting as a whole, Halle and Melissa clearly stood out, but Jonah, Daveed, Jacob, Awkwafina and even Javier did a great job as well. Also, Jessica Alexander as Vanessa absolutely stole the 5 minutes she was on screen. As for the music, I think Halle absolutely nailed Part Of Your World. She has such an innocent and naive quality to her voice yet powerful at the same time. The power in that high note in the reprise is incredible. I love Melissa's version of Poor Unfortunate Souls. There is so much sass and character in her voice. The fact that Melissa had little to no singing experience and didn't even know she could sing is INSANE. Under The Sea translates surprisingly well to live action. Daveed Diggs adds his own flavour to it and Halle's little adlibs add so much to the song. Kiss The Girl is just magical, musically and visually. I love Wild Uncharted Waters and how it has her siren song behind it. Jonah has an amazing voice and you can hear he has a theatre backround. Also, this is random but I love how you can hear his strong English accent in every single word. For The First Time is great and allows Halle to be more playful yet vulnerable. I was appalled when I first heard Scuttlebutt, but it has grown on me and now I actually kinda like it. And while some people didn't like the ending scene with Triton, Ariel's sisters and all the other merpeople, I loved it. Yeah we didn't really see Ariel interacting with any of them besides her family, but neither did we in the animation and I still felt emotional seeing them at the end. It was kind of showing how their two worlds were forever united with their marriage. There are only really two things I have a problem with in the whole movie: The lack of Flounder and lack of Ariel's wardrobe. I didn't have any problem with the way Flounder looked, I just felt like he was absolutely useless in the movie. He barely had any lines and wasn't even on screen that much. I needed more of him. And, obviously, they could've dressed Halle in a potato bag and she still would've looked gorgeous. But Ariel's wardrobe on land felt lackluster. She wore the same blue dress the entire time! Even the dress at the end during the wedding was the same one, only in pink. What about the blue dress with the bow? Or the sparkling purple dress? The wedding dress? Why not bring them to life and just modernise them a bit? I don't feel that their reunion at the end was underwhelming like some people do. If anything, I like how simple it was and that they didn't speak. They communicated enough with their faces. At the end of the day, this is a movie about a mermaid turning into a human and fish that can talk. Not everything has to make sense. The thing is, there are some people who will never be satisfied because it will never be as good as the animated version. You can still enjoy and appreciate this movie for what it is.

This story is about a mermaid which is fictional, when i was a kid i wasn’t focus on anything but that fact. Not race, not skin color, none of that really mattered. I believe with the way people think we tend to put these type of characters is certain types of demographics.I never really understood why when the author had to think outside the box to even come up with concept. Another thing keeping original high-concept, character-driven movies from being made is that too many people skip the theaters and wait until streaming to see them instead. But a movie needs to have the potential to make its money back in theaters to be made in the first place and be put on a streaming service thereafter. We are putting the cart before the hose.

I think most people dislike the movie for another reason than for the 'wokeness'. I don't like woke stuff too but I think it's completely unnecessary to make live action versions/remakes of already existing movies. It's plain unoriginal and uncreative. Why not coming up with NEW ideas and NEW heroes, you know what I mean? Take Encanto for example. It was absolutely brilliant and a great new idea. Why take the classics and redo them? There is no need for that really.

@@felidaunknown5923 Unbelievable what profound less than ideal crap you people are spewing! Here in Europe racism doesn't exist on the same level as it does in America, that's why we have no need for "wokeness". America has poisoned the minds of many people in many countries and I'll never forgive you for it! Every single time a new situation emerges you HAVE to create another dumb term or you wouldn't be happy! Because of you racism and homophobia is exploding despite what you're trying to achieve. You are so stuck in your own believes (echo chamber), you cannot see or acknowledge the chasm you're creating between the two parties. BOTH parties are at fault actually. The way you're going about things by using activism as your tool is just plain wrong, therefore I can only shake my head in defeat. Here's a fact for your probably def ears: Calling black people POCs is more racist than calling them "black"! Now think about it for 10 seconds..... Here we go: The made up term "POC" is usually ONLY used in regards to black people, even though it should by definition include ALL people aside from "whites" of course. Another reason is the term POC creates this illusion of being different, special even. But aren't well all the same? Or are you perhaps racist towards white people thinking yourself better? (There's a fantastic video called "What are We Doing to White People?") The ONLY correct method to ending racism (and homophobia for that matter) is to simply stop talking about it! Astonishing, isn't it? I know you most likely can't believe me, but if you give me the benefit of the doubt then try watching videos about racism from black youtubers. One of them talked about how Africans sold their own to the white people of America. Because if you think about it, simply "kidnapping" people from another race from OVERSEAS is entirely unrealistic. Lastly, based on your comment I can imagine you being one of those TikToker's who are saying things like "down with the patriarchy" or "kill all white people" or "I hate being of the same race as the oppressor". Seem familiar to you? If not, YES, these people are real. You simply don't get it, do you?
