While at a glance the new 5.56 Honey Badger from Q LLC looks like a short AR, there is some magic at play...
I got to sit down with Nick, one of the lead engineers at Q, and have him walk me through how they made a pretty amazing 5.56 Honey Badger. Such a cool bit of engineering.

Very cool background stuff to learn. I have about 2k rounds through my 556 HB over the last 2 months. The only issue I have had is that if I really slam a mag in on an open bolt, it can push past where it’s supposed to go and rounds start popping out. I have 0 issue with the cheek weld folks complain about. I shoot with my head up using a Unity riser with an Acro, so I get a chin weld on the aluminum struts that works perfectly fine.

It’s unfortunate how underestimated old school manual mills and lathes are. I would love to have a 7’ vertical mill and something like a 12’ lathe. I could build literally anything. With a few other machines of course. Jig grinders, surface grinders, presses and ban saws etc… but the mill and lathe is where the moneys at. I miss being a manual machinist so much. Q , you guys out out some amazing stuff. Didn’t think I’d see a 5.56 Honey Badger. Honestly never crossed my mind. But it’s dope. Keep bringing us cool shit! As an owner of the 300 BLK HB, it appears that 2 of the bad flaws in that gun are still present in the .556 version. The non captive spring, which makes reassembly a huge pain, and the cheek bite that occurs due to the design of how the stock meets the rear of the firearm. For a premium rifle, with a very premium price tag, both of these flaws are simply unacceptable in my opinion. You can and should do better Q.

I don't understand how a stronger gas block and faster twist in the barrel will increase dwell time/reduce chamber pressure during cycling. Think these will wear out/break bolts faster than a 10.3" AR15?

@Mithradates_of_Los_Angeles 8 ай бұрын
The bolt carrier is going to be acting like a ball pin hammer smacking the receiver/b.e., the fact they are quality made is the saving grace extending the part life but realistically how long can they last? if you have the $ to buy a q carbine ,why not just get the 300 and the amazing innovation they accomplished the first time around? Especially with the current ammo situation, and the issues with 556 youde be better of going the 300 route.
@Blackburn5360
@Blackburn5360 8 ай бұрын
@@iamtherealrauschguy I'd guess it's because Q was making not nearly enough money in the .300BLK due to the price in addition to time/money spent for the average person to get 2 NFA stamps for a suppressor and SBR just to take advantage of their $3,000 custom rifle that they're gonna pay roughly $3 a round to shoot. So they made a 5.55 version to try and make money

Very interesting, loved the breakdown on the design and engineering and think it’s a good idea but not sold on the design though especially after the genius engineering on an ultra short ar 556 I saw last week by Geissele. … compared to the new Geissele very short barreled carbine”pdw” type carbine the genuinely deals with dwell time bolt bounce and how hard the carrier hit the receiver and r.e. Chamber face creating a great concept for a more reliable , less violent recoil short barreled carbine, it seems kinda basic,average from such an innovative company like q. one of the main goals of the Geissele beyond standard short sbr was to make sure the carrier wasn’t hitting the receiver and b.e. Like a balloon hammer, and creating violent destructive reactions which is what impressed me so much with his design he just showed off last week. The gas system management used to regulate the carbines functions was so innovative and I kind of expected something similar from q. if I would be in the market to get an ultra short pdw style 556 I know which route ide go, but q still holds the crown with their 300 and 8.6 and other great design innovations.

I have concerns about 5.56 reaching the velocities needed to be effective out of a barrel this short, as well as case separation on bullets with that twist rate. I'm not an engineer can someone explain?
@swiftaudi
@swiftaudi 8 ай бұрын
From what I know about 5.56 this setup won’t be very effective except at really close range. 1-9 twist rate isn’t fast enough to spin the bullet combined with that short barrel equal what you said low velocity, lack of expansion. However, this gun would be a great suppressed, fun gun. I think that’s the idea, just a fun cool gun, so they should have mad it in 22😊. In this configuration 300 black out would likely still be viable at 150-200 yards.

10:04 "these 9.69(inch) barrels tend to hold about 2200fps with the m193(55gr) round..surprisingly high, at least i thought". I'm really hoping he misspoke. 10.5 is a very common length, and people regularly report 2600-2700fps out of them. 9.69inches is an oddball, but rifleshooter and ballisticsbytheinch have both done barrel chop-down tests where they showed greater velocities out of 8 inch barrels using 223, NOT 5.56. 2200fps should be about what you would get out of mk262 or perhaps the 69gr rounds he mentioned they used for accuracy testing? i really hope that going to 1:5 twist doesn't neuter velocity that much. m193 relies on velocity induced fragmentation for wounding, and is basically useless at 2200fps. links below for fps/barrel length references. Q is definitely innovative. they ought to be for the prices they charge. cool idea using dead-blow hammer 1960's tech in such a high-speed application. i just don't get the fascination, i guess. he talks a lot about how difficult it is to make a short barreled AR function. i kept thinking "has this guy heard of the mk18?". keep doing what you do Ivan. still love you, even with your occasional Q fangirling. www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/223rifle.html rifleshooter.com/2015/12/223-remington-5-56mm-nato-barrel-length-and-velocity-26-inches-to-6-inches/

You can get GP arms so much smaller, the honeybadger is starting to feel old compared to the MCX Rattler and Spear LT in 300aac from Sig and the others like the APC300 from B&T or the Dissent 300aac from CMMG.
