All HSTs operating with Great Western Railway and Virgin Trains East Coast will be replaced on their current duties by Class 800/801/802 trains by 2020. Twenty-six sets each with four or five carriages are to move from Great Western Railway to Abellio ScotRail and be refurbished with controlled emission tanks and plug automatic doors. They will operate on services from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Aberdeen and Inverness. The first two were delivered to Craigentinny TMD for crew training in September 2017.
The British Rail Class 43 (HST) is the TOPS classification used for the InterCity 125 High Speed Train (formerly classes 253 and 254) power cars, built by British Rail Engineering Limited from 1975 to 1982.
The class is officially the fastest diesel locomotive in the world, with an absolute maximum speed of 148 mph (238 km/h), and a regular service speed of 125 mph (201 km/h).
In the early 1970s, the British Railways Board made the decision to replace its main-line express diesel traction. Financial limitations were tight, so mass electrification was not possible. As a result, a new generation of high-speed diesel trains had to be developed.
Experience with the high-speed Class 55 Deltic locomotives had shown that a low axle weight was essential to avoid damage to the track at sustained high speed, and that high-speed engines were the only way to provide a good enough power/weight ratio for diesels. To power the HST at up to 125 mph (201 km/h), each power car had a new diesel engine, the 12-cylinder Paxman Valenta, running at 1,500 rpm and developing 2,250 bhp (1,680 kW). The 70-tonne weight of the power car gave it a 17.5-tonne axle loading.

The oldest public transport in everyday use that I know of are the Peter Witt trams in Milan, dating back to 1928. Train-wise, the oldest trains in daily use (non-tourist) is the 1938 London Tube stock on the Isle of Wight (80 years old!). Both are far nicer to travel in than most 1990s or 2000s era trains or trams!

And with some of the most dramatic backdrops in Britain for them to travel through. Before this was annouced I was kinda worried the HSTs would just be in preservation, on charter hire, rare special services etc within 10 years at most, glad I was wrong!

At least ScotRail is listening to its passengers and not investing in crappy under floor engine trains that are noisy and uncomfortable. You just can not beat the ride quality off HST stock and with better wider seating its a win win situation. The HST are now out performing most other passenger stock with reliability on the network, with less casualty miles per power car than other locos.
@BRI535D
@BRI535D 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely spot on! The passenger experience in these sets is unsurpassable by any of the other claustrophobic voyager/pendolino type rolling stock.Very quiet and comfortable with a formation that can easily be extended and good power to weight for acceleration and ease of climbing gradients.With state of the art engines these will last another 40 years!

So you take a full rake set, chop out 3-4 coaches and then only run them at 100mph max. Will engines be de-tuned ? What happens if overcrowding occurs and aren’t 2 power cars overkill for such trains ? Couldn’t they have followed Chiltern model with class 67/8 locos, mk3 stock and driving trailers ?

Another reason to move to Scotland..... I wonder whether it would be beneficial to regear the HST traction motors to give better acceleration and hill climbing ability since the line speed will be 100 MPH in Scotland (i.e. the same gearing as the Australian XPT). Probably not absolutely necessary so the cost is not justified.

I’ve thiroughly enjoyed watching all your videos. I’m particularly interested in 7nderstanding when the HST Class 43 will come in to service. One video mentions May 2018, but another (of the same name) mentioned the service date of May 2019. Having commuted between Inverkeithing and London Euston on a Sunday and London Kings Cross and 8nverkeithing on a Friday every week for many years...I’ve always wished for this Class of train to be in service on our Intercity routes across Scotland. My only disappointment is that they never introduced this level of service much sooner. I’d also like to see the Turbostar Class 170s running on the WHL and Mallaig line from Inverness...the Class 156 are so uncomfortable for such beautiful journeys.

The class 800s and 801s, which are the IETs, are soon to be coming to London North Eastern Railway operating the East Coast franchise, the 800’s are bi-mode trains as they can operate on partly electrified lines where some of the overhead lines are available on some lines and some of them in north gradient aren’t. But the class 801s, which are the EMU versions will only operate on all electrified lines. I think I’m going to go on one these new trains one day....

Not bad going for a design that was intended as a "quick fix" solution regards the need for high speed travel back in the mid 70's & as such was to be replaced in 20 years or so! To get more than double that shows what a ground braking design it was,yes they have different power units now but no engine design could be expected to last 40 years. From a passenger point of view, I think they still give the best levels of comfort(although I have not traveled on a 800 yet) so it will be interesting to see what they are like after this latest refurbishment.

The current Class 170's are totally inadequate for long distance services and are a disgrace and an embarrassment. If so, it'd be lovely for the Paxman VP185 engines to be retained! Yes the engines may cause a more pollution, Birmingham New Street in particular, but I'd rather a very-close-to-a-proper HST with more space and capacity than a 4 or 5-car Voyager! Yes I love the Voyagers for a good number of things, but I much prefer the HST's! Secretly, I've travelled backwards without feeling sick on most. On the 27/11/17 and the 18/12/17 (the day before my 25th Birthday), I travelled backwards brilliantly. I think this is because the acceleration of the HST's gives you time to get use to it rather than virtually no time on Voyagers + the spacious Mark 3 coaches helps enormously too 😀!

The class 43's are being snaped to replace stock. They have very advanced brakeing systems meaning higher speeds than the trains they are replacing on the same track and signaling and with 4 or 5 coaches instead of 8 any advantage in acceleration by new stock would be minimal and passengers like the quiet and comfortable ride. The limit of 125 MPH is because main lines have 4 sections plus overlap to stop and stopping any faster would cause everythig to fly around and passengers thrown about. In cab signaling means you can increase or decrease the number of track sections to suite line speed without putting in new signals everywhere. It was intended in the 1970's for the HST to run at 150 MPH in service but trials of in cab signaling in the late 70's and early 80's were not reliable enough, so the HST was limited to 125 MPH, and was one of the main reasons why the APT was stopped. The max speed of the HST is 148 MPH only because it's governed to it.

Ok, I'm an "outsider" here, commenting as a railfan visiting the UK recently, *BUT...* having travelled by HST, Class 800, Caly Sleeper, Class 170, and Class 156, my over-all preference quickly became the HST. I found the Class 800 not only lacking in character, but also performance. I had the dis-pleasure of travelling on one from Didcot to Swindon in August, and saw it struggle to get much over 100 mph, whereas an HST reached its full potential of 125 mph quite easily. Next most desirable was the Class 170 "Turbostar." I first had one from Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen St, and later Edinburgh Waverley to Inverness. They're not a bad train, but for the Inverness trip I wish I'd known about the LNER HST an hour or so behind my overcrowded Class 170! To me the HST is wasted in Scotland. They seem to be far better off on either GWR or ECML workings.

Without doubt the HST sets with their Mk3 carriages are by far the best ride experience for passengers period.Cross Country should follow suit and replace woefully inadequate 4/5 car Voyagers with minimum 6 car HST sets to Scotrail specification.We have gone backwards since 2002 when Virgin replaced the 6/7 carriage class 47 hauled stock with those cramped underfloor engined Dmus.Passenger numbers increased and trains get shorter and they justify it with the excuse of increased frequency of service.Lamentable!

When these were been designed and developed Early/Mid 1970's do you think they tested to see how the nose cone would fair AFTER it had a "Jumper" (Anyone who works in the rail industry will know what a jumper is) I bet they did behind closed doors... Tested to see how the nose-cone faired after it had struck anything up to 100 KG of flesh and bones at 120 MPH EDIT... My late father was a train driver from 1970 until 1988.. He worked on freight driving mainly class 37's and class 47's. He had one "Jumper" in his 18 year career as a driver ..He was driving a class 37 at the time...

IMHO, the survey they did, that showed customers prefer a loco hauled train was bloody obvious. Since most of the UK went down the DMU route for non-electrified lines, you sit in a shortened train, seats packed in, with an engine vibrating under your arse. No proper buffet car......a "trolley service" if you are lucky. Of COURSE loco hauled trains are more comfortable. Coaching stock takes so much less maintenance than a DMU. Loco hauled trains are simply more flexible and more comfortable.

I’m still baffled by why Scotrail only wanted the Class 43 so late ...... other operators have been operating them for God knows how many years ago......and no OFFENCE in any way but, it’s kinda out dated...... Might wanna go for a class 395 javelin with its third rail and pantograph configuration. It also has a more convenient seating arrangement👌😃 And yes..... BR’s status will be deteriorating fast if they don’t modernise more rolling stock and inferstructure

Considering all the money spent getting them to the condition they're in now? I don't think so!!! Sure the government is looking to take back all the passenger franchises (not the right way, the way I see it) but replacing HST's with Class 91s and crappy Class 800s? Get your hand off it!!! The Class 800 is junk, and the Class 91s are electric only, like the HST, intended for 125 MOH or more, running. 🙄

It's May 18 and today is the very last journey,here in GWR land, of the much loved HST 125. I've a hunch it'll be one huge mistake replacing them with horrible 800's. Bland, boring and unreliable. Come back HST, we love you.😖

EeeeenSH Less carriages so more power-to-weight ratio to make them faster up the steep gradients in Scotland and lose less time per stop at a station. With only 4-5 carriages to pull instead of 7-9, these things will be fast as hell, able to keep up with a new DMU despite going up steep hills and stopping a lot. Besides, 4-5 HST carriages is still loads more seats than every train that does these routes at the moment, and more can quite easily be added if it ends up not being enough (in say 10 years or thereabouts, it's really unlikely they won't be enough before then). Also Mk 3 carriages have a lot more room than a DMU/EMU carriage because they're longer, there's no driving cab, no engines or pantographs etc. Probably has a capacity similar to a 6-7 coach multiple unit - far better than a 4/5 coach voyager for example.

RedButtonProductions I don't understand why they are using 4, 5 car voyagers and 2 car turbostars on cross country. It's ridiculous. It's just another privitisation fiasco. When the HSTs get withdrawn they should all go to cross country to replace the voyagers and turbostars.

Lucky them! Endured another tiresomely slow and uncomfortable XC Peterborough to Birmingham journey today. Paid £88 yet no free wifi. Chugging along at a snails pace up the inclines, poor legroom with knees pressed against the seat in front, dirty and worn-out seats. What of the supposed £20m upgrade? I'm not convinced refitting the same old trains with a bit of new flooring and seat covers etc is going to make a lot of difference. I'd sooner they leased some old HST's from GW. They might not look so pretty but at least they'd have a bit of acceleration and be more comfortable for the customer.
