Made a similar comment on a different video but this serve is really interesting. I live in Japan and work in one of the best highschools for badminton in the country and I talked to the coach about it. Apparently over 3 years ago a high school team here used this serve in an all Japan highschool competition and it did not go down well. In Japan, this serve is very famous and since the competition 3 years ago, every highschool competition has an agreement between coaches stating the serve cannot be used. People in Japan use this serve as a joke sometimes, even in very casual play!

I don't think that they'll add a new rule regarding serves because serving has already had its own category in BWF'S rulebook. (Take women's singles for example, almost everyone do the high serve) What is most likely to happen though, is them adding two separate serving category (low and high serve aka forehand and backhand serve) and then build the rule from then onwards.

I thought you already had to hold it there. If anyone starts doing this serve, I'm just going to concede the game, I've got no time for nonsense. I'd rather go and do something else. 😑

I would like to see it be in use for a while and then get a deepdive on what effects it has had on the matches....not saying it is the case this time, but often new things are banned before players can solve the issue...Will be an intersting topic to follow for sure. Thanks! PS! I was kindda hoping that lefties might do a right handed serve and then swap hands....theat would have made the serve even more crazy 🤣

This is similar to table tennis. You used to be able to hold the balls by your fingers, but they changed it to having it on an open palm because you could put spin on the ball with your fingers, making your serve much harder to return.

I have been using this serve for past 2 weeks incl at a match. My observation is that you need to practice spinning and releasing the shuttle first such that it lands perfectly down (instead of flying off sideways where your racquet completely misses it). Once you get the release correct, rest is easy

I've always held the shuttle just above the cork with the feathers pointing away from me, I find that a very effective way to serve for me at least. As much as I appreciate the skill involved with this new serve, I'd hate to see a rule applied where the holding of the shuttle by the cork was disallowed. Might give this a bit of practice though to see if I can give it a spin! ;)
@crazybeebob
@crazybeebob Жыл бұрын
Reminds me of F1 cars. Technology -> restriction, new technology -> restricted again. I must admit that the height rule for service is a big step forward. The 'not hit the feathers first' has come for the same reason as this way of serving = unpredictable trajectory. But I think it won't take long before there will come a counter to this. Maybe it's impossible to flick or if you see them holding the cork you might already know what's coming.

Can you pls make a video or advice me about how to stop my racket sound at top instead of making a sound like wuss from top to shoulder length it’s sound like pulling down even tho i’m using both shoulder,forearm and wrist. I'm in between with the "holding the shuttle only by the feathers" rule because it will require people to relearn the forehand serve. People hold the shuttle either at the bottom of the feather and/or the top of the cork. It's very debatable whether people are or aren't touching the cork. But until then, let's just try this serve hahaha
@mattpotter8725

I understand your reservations about preventing rallies, which is fair comment, but surely with this being new is what's causing the advantage and over time how to play it to your advantage will improve so as not to make it so much of an advantage? It looks a tricky serve to master anyway so how effective this would be I'm not so sure, so I think instead of just banning it outright it should be looked at, as I think it is difficult enough winning points on serve as it is without making it harder. I'm also wondering if you could do the same serve holding the feathers (not as easy and possibly effective, but maybe possible), I like the thought of the server having another serve type to throw off the returner. I think we should see how it goes before banning it.

Not exactly sure who was the first to use this serve but the earliest instance I found of someone using it was in the Australian open 2022 by none other than Choi himself! Here’s a link to that match and he first uses it at 5:37:15 : kzfaq.infoFcNqOsvlbng?feature=share Liu Yuchen gets super confused by it and even calls the tournament referee over but play continues. Seems to me Choi practiced the serve a lot and then pulled it out later when he got more comfortable using it. Cool how you guys were able to get the serve rather consistent in a short amount of time though! I’ve tried it for several hours and gotten mixed results 😂

Yeah, I play against people who don't serve in one continuous motion. They move racket forward, then back, then forward to hit the shuttle to serve. There are some other tatics. They don't realize they are so focused on cheating that their serves are easy to return. The same guy will do a net shot, then stick up his racket, waving it, to do a volleyball or basketball style block. He is doing it to be cheeky; not to protect himself. One day, someone is going swing a racket (he is blocking the follow-through) into his racket or hit him in the face (too close to net).

While not currently an unlawful serve it does seem to be firmly against the spirit of good badminton and, I suspect, the current laws will be rapidly amended to stop this serve gaining traction. "Gaming" the serve in badminton has been a thing for as long as I have been playing (and that's a long time), but these methods come and then go when people understand the damage they do to our sport.
@BadmintonInsight

Going to disagree with you slightly on that last point. These methods, sadly, don't go away when people understand how damaging they are. They go away when they're banned. The people who come up with these loopholes are fully aware that they're breaking the spirit of the game, but they only care about winning.

Standard answer: it depends! 🙂 If you have big hands and feel a bigger grip would help you, then go ahead and double grip it. I find a double gripped racquet too thick, so I have a 50% overlap owitha single grip to pad it out a bit more, but not too much. Supplied grips on new racquet are often not very good anyway, so you might try a variety to see which you get on with best. I'm a Karakal PU Super Grip guy, personally. Good luck!

It looks dangerous because the shuttle moves unpredictably. I think new rules are needed.

I like this serve it makes the game even more fun to watch. At least in Tennis when it is just serve they need to hit the ball 200+km/h. It reminds me the spaghetti racquet that was making the ball to spin in all directions.

Whenever I play a singles match, after serving my oponnent usually flicks it back, sometimes I find it very hard to return back, as the timing of the shuttle landing is shortened. Even if I return it, it goes straight to my oponnent's hand where they finish it off with a place. How do I prevent this from happening?
@IgarashiDai
@IgarashiDai Жыл бұрын
There’s a number of ways to counteract this. One, if you anticipate that this is going to happen, try moving to the center of the court immediately after serving (or any position from where you feel that you can comfortably reach the shuttle, wherever it may go). If you’re still not able to reach it when you do that, consider either serving from a position further back or trying a flick serve to the back of the court to buy yourself more time. Of course there are other ways to do this, but I think these are the more common/easy to try ☺️

Thanks for the Video Grenny ♥ I hope they will make a rule against this kinds of out of raquet impact . You should not be allowed to spin the shuttle before hitting. Its like playing with your hand before you hit the shuttle in the middle of the ralley and this is not allowed aswell for a good reason.👎

"Its like playing with your hand before you hit the shuttle in the middle of the ralley" What do you mean? That it's like hitting the shuttle with your hand, then hitting it with the racquet in the middle of a rally?
@Serial_Lain
@Serial_Lain Жыл бұрын
@@TheDreamLeaf yes. Its like stop the shuttle with your hand and play on within the rally. But this is just my opinion: Its ok to spin the shuttle with your raquet but not with your fingers.

@@TheDreamLeafAre you allowed to play the shuttle with your hand during a rally? If not, why would you be allowed to play the shuttle with your hand at the start of a rally?
@TheDreamLeaf

@@bobminor1141 Because "serving" and "in the middle of a rally" are 2 completely different things? I'm genuinely confused. I feel your sentence is like saying we shouldn't be allowed to touch the shuttle with our hand when serving, because we can't touch the shuttle with our hand in the middle of the rally. It's illogical to me

I said this on Tobias' video, so I'll say it here: Table Tennis outlawed pre-spin of the ball during the serve ... so did Pickleball. Fingers crossed this get banned, too!

Carry your racket with the shuttle for twice maybe even 3 times longer than you normally would, the racket will correct the spinning so long as you don't flick off the shuttle too early.
