Just placed order on the new sigma 85 1.4 dg dn. What an amazing new lens. Sigma is really pushing out some great glass lately that's much more compact than what they used to do. They need to keep making smaller lenses like this that's priced well.

The Sigma just outperforms the nearly five-year old lens design of the GM. If you get a chance can you redo the backlight test using the lens hoods. I personally shoot backlight using the lens hood. I love Sigma lenses and I wanted to get the 85 so bad but it was so big and expensive. I went with Sony 85 1.8 FE which I got pretty cheap, however, I always feel like I'm getting way less that I could with the Sigma. Plus I never miss focus with my Sigma 50 1.4 but with my Sony, I focus on the eyes and it's "hello" chest or neck or whatever.

Seems to me the G Master 85mm 1.4 wouldn’t be ideal for a b roll lens? Sounds like it doesn’t like to focus as quick? What would you recommend?

I was about to click order for the Sony GM and last min decided to check out some reviews online on the Sigma. I ordered it from BHP on Thu and got it in time for a shoot on Sat the same week. Image quality and sharpness fantastic !! I like everything about this lens!

Great review! But honestly this is the first comparison of these two lenses which made me a fan of the GM over the Sigma! Nevertheless the reviewer opinion is completely different... I think that flare control means slot and also the bokeh looks way much creamier...and I think that being razor sharp is not a big deal in portraits but I thing Sigma's biggest edge over Sony is it's color. Oh am I the only one which wonders why almost all of your shots were overexposed intentionally?

I sold my 85GM and got a sigma 85 DG DN...man,,,much sharper , punchy wide open.smaller, lighter, more dangerous lens in streets...faster , silent AF...man cant be happier.

I feel, there is something very special about that 85GM look that none of those other 85 lenses can match. The Sigma comes really close. But superb sharpness open wide is not everything.

I am a canon user I just got my first mirrorless and I hate it that canon decided to go the macro route with the 85, f2 it’s just not good enough for me, I hope sigma releases a canon version soon

Hey Manny, If I remember right you already had a video talking about the new Canon 85 L vs the GM. and f1.2 vs f1.4 and the size and weight and price of them. and you gave a conclusion, but I wish you would revisit that subject because so many people seem to buzz over the f1.2L glass because of it being f1.2. but for me, even though I am like everyone else and would love f1.2. I don't think the size and weight of the lens makes it worth having an f1.2 lens. and there is also the price to consider. and when you are buying a camera brand you are not just buying the camera, you are buying into the lens system. and when this new 85 Sigma art came out. it made me happy I was part of the Sony system. because it is an f1.4 lens with great image quality. but is small and only weighs 625grams. compared to the big and heavy monster Canon 85L which is 1190grams, and the price is $2500 compared to the Sigma $1.199. but lets just say as a portrait photographer, you consider the 85 your most important lens. and then you weigh the things you like about a Sony Camera like an A7rlll vs a Canon camera like the new eosr5, and maybe throw the Nikon in the mix, and you think about what system you want to invest in, not just the camera, but the entire investment. what brand do you think you would buy into if you were making a fresh start with gear. and if Nikon comes out with the Z7s and it focuses great. and they come out with an 85 f1.2 at the same time. would that alter your decision. I wish you would make a video about this, because like everyone else. even though I own a Sony, I also look at what is coming out from Canon and Nikon, and I haven't invested heavy in Sony glass yet because I am keeping my eye on whats going on with Nikon and Canon. but when this new Sigma 85 art came out, and its the same price as the old one. with similar image quality, and half the weight. it made me think that I was happy that I am in the Sony system. because I would rather carry a 625 gram f1.4 than a 1190 gram f1.2. and the fact that it is less than half the price is also really nice. but then I also have been asking myself if I want the new Art lens. because I already own the small and light Sony 85 f1.8. and I have an old Sigma 85 f1.4 that came out before the art lens, that I can adapt. anyway it would be cool to see a video where you just discussed the different systems that are out today. as good as the new eosr5 is, it is not making me want to move on from my A7r lll. and it's partially because I don't want to carry the heavy L glass. and Sony will always have more great third party options than Canon and Nikon, but if Nikons next high end camera like a Z7s comes out with the dual processor. and it suddenly catches up to Sony and Canons focusing, and they also come out with some f1.2 glass. that might get me thinking about buying into Nikon. but for now I'm sticking with my A7r lll, sorry for the long comment that is all over the place.

@Manny,, the A7iii is your daily driver, right? Can you produce a video of what you hope is in the A7IV, what it would take to make you upgrade? I can see the wear on the edges of your A7iii just from your hands. I have the 7iii & the RIii and I think I’m more excited about upgrading to the A7IV than anything, because I really ain’t to crazy about the 61mp file size of the A7IV (especially for weddings -if we ever get a chance to do that again!). More contrast means its more compressed. Its basically like shooting with a raw+ + jpeg. The jpeg will always have more contrast while the raw doesn't. If you shoot in raw you don't want then you wouldn't want more contrast to your images to begin with just the right exposure.
