They really should've kept the SD card slot. Those emulators ROMs (and other stuff like photos and videos, since the phone won't be used just for gaming, but for a lot of day to day tasks) surely will eat a lot of space. Moving some lower-end consoles ROMs to a SD card with the decent enough speeds would've help to save space in a long run.

Moto G stylus 5G 2022 still retains the SD card slot and headphone jack despite it being a midrange performance phone.

@@EdnovStormbrewer Yeah, thankfully a lot of budget and midrange phones still do (although, even there some budget-midrange phones are losing these features). It's just these "gaming" phones are considered something more than just a regular modern "barebones" flagship in terms of feature set , so it's weird seeing them going this route. I mean, they cranked active cooling (fan) there, could've also squeezed SD card slot in there.

True enough. I have the old red magic 5g and with 256gb, I had to keep backing up my photos and videos in order to keep my roms in here and also putting only 5 or so ps2 roms and 10 3ds games and replacing only after completing them.

Xperia is not a gaming phone, it's compact and generates more heat. Also snapdragon chip didn't help it either.

Just for future reference. I’m interested in just pushing the hardware to it’s full capabilities. You should also include a setup/startup rating for emulation just to compare the different OS available. Thankful for your channel.

I love the design, that bezeless screen with no punch hole, the bigger battery, upgraded main sensor finally, HEADPHONE JACK, and that rectangular shape! My only gripes are that the ultra wide sensor isn't that good, and I'm not sure how the software updates are. I heard it's getting better though.

The only think that sucks to me is no micro SD. Honestly, I might prefer that for a gaming phone over the headphone jack though if you take long trips I guess the headphone jack is more useful.

What you can do on android is bump up the resolution of genshin impact if you have a rooted phone. Geekerwan tested this on the Xiaomi 13, and the 8gen2 can play genshin at 4k 30 fps which is quite insane. The adreno 740 is said to be comparable to a gtx 1050, and it's a year ahead of apple's best offering

Looking forward to a more in-depth emulation video for the Red Magic 8 Pro Plus. I am especially looking forward to a thorough review of the desktop mode in combination with various emulators. Also, can Wii and Gamecube go any higher than 720p on this? Seems a little low and I feel it should be able to do at least 1080p.

Love that it has headphone jack, but really wish it had microSD support. These "gaming" phones should take note from the Steam Deck where its intended extended storage is microSD even though it technically supports SSD upgrades via its m.2 slot.

Seeing how many USB-C to headphone adapters I have, I would of MUCH rather have a MicroSD over a headphone jack. Nevermind a fairly good USB-C to headphone jack is like tops $20, it's a big loss here.

That is seriously impressive. I haven't been this impressed with a phone in some time. I'll still have to look at reviews of it as a phone, but as long as it has a decent camera and the phone call quality is good, this phone seems like a good purchase, The price is about par for the course for something of this speed and quality.

@@Prodbytocile Just like Apple doesn't care about cooling solutions. It's literally burning your hands if you play Genshin on Iphone 14 at max setting for more than 15 mins. If Apple starts adding gaming features to iPhone, It'll easily cost more than $2000.

The camera is the only thing that's really stopping me from getting this over the upcoming S23+/Ultra. Its ultrawide cam's pixel count sucks and I've seen some of its night mode shots and they look bad as well.

I've had this phone myself for almost 2 weeks & love it. I also did a video on my channel for it, but of course, yours is way better, which is why I look forward to these. Now I do want to clarify something about the refresh rate. RedMagic was not only the first to bring 144hz refresh rates to mobile, but also 165hz & the reason this is capped at 120hz, is simply because of the in-disply selfie camera. Last year when they came out with the RedMagic 7 & 7 Pro, the standard 7 had a 165hz refresh rate, as did the 6/6S Series from the year before, but lacked the hidden front facing camera the 7 Pro had, just as the 7S (China release only) & 7S Pro didn't/did, respectively, a few months later. This year, they chose to solely go with the Pro, so there is no model without the in-disply front facing camera & he technology isn't quite there yet, for them comfortably offer refresh rates higher than 120hz with the hidden camera.

Using a 6s Pro here, & honestly? I've never really noticed the diff between 120hz & 165hz refresh. I even have it at 90hz right now & that works just fine for me. Is the 8 Pro Plus the first Red Magic phone you've ever used? & if not, have you ever used the version I'm responding to you now on & can you tell me if you like it more than the 6S Pro?

@@nunyabusiness8441 EXACTLY! Heck even 60fps is more than enough for mobile gaming. The real upgrade should have been the micro sd support. These refresh rate, charging speed etc are just gimmick. 60-120 refresh rate and 67 watts charging are more than enough.

How is sustained performance on this phone? I have a Poco F4 GT, SD 8 Gen 1 runs amazing but man it gets hot, with a cooling fan I can get sustained performance but maybe this integrated cooling works the same with no hassle at all

@@alexn572 7 pro pretty much never gets hot, sd8gen2 has even better heat control, plus the cooling system has been improved, so I think the 8 pro will only get hot on Max frame rate, while charging, without the fan on

My only hang up about this phone is I hear it doesn't support third party launcher is very well. At least with previous iterations of the phone. Maybe that's changed. Still it's refreshing to see some unique phones in the gaming space is where a lot of them are. I'm not a huge mobile gamer but the phones are interesting in their own ride.

@@Finns-Projects Yeah sounds like a very weird issue, I've never had, or even heard of on android. Maybe they mean the ease of setting another launcher as default? I use nova still, I was an amatuer android dev on xda-developers porting custom ROMs back in 2014.

This is still an issue. You cant set your Launcher as Standard Launcher, but you can add it to your Home Screen... I prefer Smart Launcher because of the categories, but every second Update, they patch the functionslity in, then Out, then in again...

I totally agree, a well placed second Type-C port would be nice if they won't add a micro SD card slot, Looking at the prices of this phone, your paying an extra £150 for the 512GB versus 256GB, my guess is that this time next year, the Redmagic 8 Pro 512GB will sell for £500-£600, I might just get one for the extra storage and the better squared phone housing that will fit better on the backbone controller.

For me, Gamepad Support fails in Console Mode and Screen Mirroring Mode without Console mode retains the original aspect Ratio (21:9 on a 16:9 Screen) In addition, some Games Crash in Gametime because they detect it as a Cheat Tool. Gametime is still a Buggy mess 1 year after its Launch.

The removal of the micro SD slot is a deal-breaker regardless of anything else this phone has to offer. But I've had a couple of Red Magic phones and they were both buggy. There's the obvious stuff like Engrish in the dialogs and menus but sometimes turning them on would have them hang on a black screen indefinitely (terrifying the first time it happened!) and I'd have to reboot them once or twice to get them to start up. As such, I wouldn't get another Red Magic regardless of specifications and would wait for someone more reputable to release a device with this chipset.

Hey, you should dive into Exagear (Windows Emulator powered by Wine) Gaming, it's where people test and maybe try Windows games possibly on android, this is how much phones are improved. You should try and research about if if you'd like, i've tried it a few times.

I can't believe your experience with the Dolphin emulator version on Android. I saw these games running at 720p resolution on 860sd phones in the latest update of the emulator. It is inconceivable that you cannot try them on 1080p. I hope you re-experience well and use the appropriate settings to enhance performance

The only issue I have with this phone is that the China Model has slightly better specs (such as faster charging) but will most likely cost less than International model. I'd like to see a comparison between the two models (China Vs International) and see which runs better and if the spec difference is really that big of a deal.

Pretty much the china version has 165 watt charging and a 5000mah battery while the global has 66w charging and 6000mah battery, also costs about 150 USD more

How do you design a beefy gaming phone like this and leave off the micro SD storage? I just don't get it. They found room for a fan and a bunch of goofy LEDs but not something functional like storage? Also, is there a fingerprint sensor? I do think the design is a step in the right direction but I feel like these always have some significant flaw that keeps me from even considering them.

I can confirm personally that the Razer Kishi is great as long as you don't have a case on your phone. It's possible I just have too thick of a case though (I use an OtterBox).

The GameSir X2 Pro is arguably as good as the Kishi V2. Both have clicky buttons and Hall Effect triggers. Neither has a headphone jack or Hall Effect sticks; but, the ALPS sticks in my X2 Pro have been flawless so far. GameVice, the company that made the Kishi V1 for Razer, makes a new version of it called the Flex and it has a headphone jack but I don't know anything else about it.

@@estusflask982 exactly. It's still expensive but lesser expensive. $250 to $300 is cheap without sacrificing performance depending on the brand. Xaomi, Poco and Redmi are the big 3 you can find smartphones around that price with above ordinary performance.

You do realize that always describing every single thing you test as being ‘the most powerful we’ve ever tested’ (royal ‘we’?), or ‘amazing’, or that it ‘has the power we need’ or whatever other superlative comes to mind, week after week, starts to grate after a while, & raises questions about credibility, right? I mean, I really appreciate you describing your experiences with all these various things (although why you always test Cyberpunk 2077 at 800p with no FSR, irrespective of device resolution, is a mystery to me). But maybe you could tone down the constant over-the-top effusiveness, just a bit?

To be fair many of the devices he reviews ARE the most powerful versions but yea, I agree. My biggest gripe is when something he tests 'runs better than he expected'. With the vast years of experience he has with all these devices how can so many exceed expectations?

The geekbench single core performance is a lot lower than other 8 gen 2 devices like xiaomi 13 etc even though this device has a cooling fan it seems to be throttling the single core clock speeds or some other software issue limiting the single core performance. If they fix that could be even faster at emulation/gaming for games that are cpu bottlenecked

@@pushpopLoC909 Likely because of the entry price. I honestly wont go back to a non-foldable unless it's an emergency need for a phone or I'm financially constrained. But if productivity isn't a factor, and I have no use for a tablet sized screen on call remotely, then why spend the extra money. Are people really out here going "ew, it gets bigger? That's dumb"? Or are they saying "Jesus effin christ, it's an extra thousand dollars just for a bigger screen?!"

I have had the previous 7s pro phone for the last 6 months since it was released. Love it so far. It has the gen 1 plus so just a slightly slower phone. So far I have been really impressed. If I was having a need for a new phone I would be looking at this for sure. These things are actually something the average person can buy and use right away. For reference I have TMobile. Just took the sim card out of my LG V20 and moved it over. Everything just worked after doing so. I held on to that V20 for years though because it was the last good phone with a headphone jack, sd card slot, and IR blaster. Miss those features on the new phones. But the screen was finally going due to excessive ghosting. After a lot of research I went with the 7s pro and haven't regretted it at all.

Would you recommend getting the 7s pro 16gb ram variant or 8 pro 12gb ram variant? They're pretty much in the same price range. I'm not sure if I should pick the one with a bigger ram or a newer chipset

I've learned a lesson from using last year's 6S plus as my daily phone. I hope they've allowed more carriers than just T-Mobile, because phone calls are subpar as the phone glitches out where no one can hear you on the other end unless you switch it from speaker & regular or vise versa & that's just freaking weird. Text connectivity is pretty shitty as well with group texting & not all texts come through. When it comes to a gaming phones, it's all well & good but as an ACTUAL PHONE TO USE AS A COMMUNICATION DEVICE? I hope they've also fixed THE PHONE part as well in the 8 Pro Plus.
