When Geoff Edwards passed away, I posted a short compilation of clips to honor my friend and colleague. When the clip about a lady who went crazy after winning was included in the video, I would have no idea what would happen next. Debbie Speed is that "crazy lady's" daughter and she was overjoyed when she spotted her Mom in that clip. She contacted me and we began chatting. I told Debbie that her Mom, Deloris Marler, was chosen because out of all of the clips we had from "The New Treasure Hunt", her reaction to Geoff was so pure and honest. A really great contestant.
I am happy to report Deloris is now 77 years old and she was gracious enough to give us a little insight about her experience as a "New Treasure Hunt" contestant. I think you'll find her story very interesting. Thank you Deloris and Debbie for sharing this with us! - The Winker
"Confessions of a Game Show Contestant" by Deloris Marler
My friends were all going to see a taping of a new show called, "The New Treasure Hunt" and asked me if I wanted to join. I said I would love to. On the way there, my friends said even if they got picked, they wouldn't win. But I said I WAS GOING TO WIN!
I was so excited, and a little bit nervous when I thought of what it would be like to go onstage. But as soon as I opened my box and saw I had a number, I ran onstage forgetting all about the TV cameras were rolling.
Geoff Edwards was so nice and he put me at ease. As you'll see in the clip, I risked the money and thought I had been Klunked. I was sad, but I tried not to show it. As I was walking back to my seat, Geoff called me back on to the stage and began to tell me I had actually won a great prize. I couldn't believe it! Then he started counting out the money in my hand. Those tears are real!
I think it was a miracle of God that I got to be on the show. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity "The New Treasure Hunt" gave me and my family. Winning close to $8,000 in cash and prizes in 1973 was a big deal...it's roughly the equivalent to winning over $40,000 today.
I ended up taking cash for the car and golf clubs and it allowed us to pay off all of our bills and move from California to Kentucky, where we eventually opened the first health food store in a 200 mile radius. The store moved to a larger town after a short time, and our grandson (coincidentally named Geoff) now manages the store forty years after that first store opened. Just think, it really started with "The New Treasure Hunt!"
I wonder how many other lives were touched by appearing on this show or other game shows? Maybe some of the people that read this will have a story to tell, too. I think it would be exciting to hear their stories! Thank you Wink for bringing this clip to me and my family and for allowing me to share this story. I really had a lot of fun reliving that time and reminiscing. Deloris Marler

+polskikoobis OMG! I LOVED it! Your mom totally captured all of the thrills, suspense, fantasy, excitement, and fun of T.V. game shows!! 8:40-9:05, I was literally bawling tears of joy (I know, I'm a big softie... lol...) I just love to see wonderful things happen to wonderful people; even if it's 35+ years ago! Does my heart good! Blessings! :-) #Godisgood

Great that your mom was able to do something good out of those winnings after paying the taxes on it. Maybe that was why she took cash for it?

One of the best "surprise" endings I've seen. Geoff's play along factor until the revealing of the final prize is fantastic. One of Barris's best shows.

What I know from another comment was that each box had a specific skit Geoff had to do unless the contestant went for the box and it was the grand prize, then there was no skit and Geoff would play it out

Alfonzo Smith The other thing was that there were no cue cards so he had to memorize all the different sketches for each box. During the break, they would tell him which one it was, but he still had to memorize everything.

The late Geoff Edwards is my favorite game show host of all time. NOBODY was better fit to do this show than Geoff. I loved him on Chain Reaction and Starcade (I was of the age where that show appealed to me immensely). Someone needs to do a compilation video entitled "The Best of Emile Autouri." Next to seeing the very lovely Jan Speck in the 1980's run, Geoff was a master at attempting to get a reaction out of him, and Emile was a pro at keeping character (except for that one time).

I've always thought how cool it would be to see where the contestants from former classic game shows are now, and how being on that particular game show changed their lives. Particularly, I would love to hear about contestants from "Match Game", and Bob Barker's "The Price Is Right", from the 70's and 80's.

Deloris, to really crunch the numbers...what you won, $7,917.79 in cash and prizes would be the equivalent to according to the Inflation Calculator...$41,857.65! And winning $25,000 would be like winning $132,163.29.

Wink, from what I heard, this show could've went on for a lot longer but Chuck wanted Geoff to make the contestants worry more even longer to the point of almost having a heart attack & Geoff refused so Chuck just gave up on the show. BTW, Geoff was a great host on every game show he was on, especially "Jackpot".

I figured as much. I've heard so many stories of how people had to forfeit their prizes because the taxes were just too high. Makes me wonder how many people realize that *before* they go on a game show.
@sha11235
@sha11235 7 жыл бұрын
Well, there is no way to lessen the tax on cash prizes. The thing is with other prizes, the amount they say on the show it is is always higher than what you can get for it in a regular store, so what happens is they tax you on the amount they say it is. However, you can find the same item discounted in a regular store and get the storekeeper to sign a declaration verifying this price, and then declare it on the income tax form at a lower price. So that is good news. And yes, you are allowed to forfeit a prize if you prefer not to pay taxes on it.

@@wschmrdr True, although there is no way around the tax bite with a cash prize as with other prizes. The car would be a higher amount anyway (they always do that) so just find the car at a dealership and see how much less it is and get the dealer to sign a document attesting to that amount, and you can declare it on the tax form at the lower price.
