The MCI D series has always been the work horse of the motorcoach industry here in North America. In 2017 MCI announced the future release of a all new D model. A new workhorse. Will it hold its reputation? Is it something completely different?
This video will explain of what this bus actually is and how it came to be.

The old D models had a great run. Thanks for the vid, I think this is the breakdown of the new D series we all needed. Also, I rode my first DL3 as a kid in 2001, Greyhound, Savannah GA (across the bridge 👍) to NJ and I sat in the back🤯 Series 60 🤯. Favorite bus PERIOD, no question. MCI is smart to have a lower cost model. As stalwart as the J4500 is, it’s wise not to rely on one. See they aren’t FORD or BOEING so MCI actually makes sure that something will work before releasing it. James I know that feeling of how much torment a crush can be and not being able to muster the courage to talk to her. I’m nearly 60 and still have trouble. Coach builders may or may not realize how their products are instrumental in shaping people’s life memories such as vacations or one day trips. I’ll go on a limb and say that the all electric coach’s will not last. You know that from that trip. I think they’ll revisit the hybrid concept. I could be wrong but a hybrid is the best of both worlds. Always look forward to your videos.

@@ford4x4 because they're the cheapest, and because rental companies buy shitloads of em. That story is repeating itself for over 30 years at Ford's
@ford4x4
@ford4x4 Ай бұрын
@@adamdion7574 Yes, why would rental companies buy a lot of them? Because Ford Pro is available on the commercial line of vehicles, Ford has engineered a highly sophisticated fleet management system that acts like FordPass, but for the entire fleet. They are cheap, it is Ford's main principal to build a product that is inexpensive so the masses can afford and use them, this appeals to the low income or low paying and oftentimes younger people, so they have a decent car to get around in, especially on the used car market. This story will repeat another 30 years into the future for Ford's appeal to rental companies and lower payed working class people.

@@ford4x4 People have a fixation with brand loyalty even when it’s garbage. Just read the current recalls and problems FORD is having with almost all of their products. Just about the only FORD product that isn’t plaqued with a multitude of problems is the heavy E SERIES chassis. Which is the foundation for many class C motor homes and shuttle buses.
@ford4x4
@ford4x4 Ай бұрын
@@crabbymilton390 it's Ur opinion of 'garbage' and the Ford Falcon and Territory also have little problems, with the only recall being Takata airbags. Brand loyalty is OK if U just prefer said brand, some ppl will go for a Hyundai over a Kia because of the relationship they have built with the brand. Yet I acknowledge the many recalls in Ford's recent history and I do not try to act as if it didn't happen, ppl who do that have overt brand loyalty which ofc is not always good. A friendly car debate is mostly harmless however, and in my previous response, I was just providing my opinion on Ford vehicles based on the facts. Friendly car debates always have some positives, any debate can, so long as it doesn't go too far. I hope I didnt waffle to much in my response and it was understandable.

The D45 CRT LE is an excellent coach for the transit agency that I'm working for. Excellent for highway travel and easy accessibility for mobility devices. However we demand the luggage compartment area for airport routes. Let see how MCI solve this problem
@MotorCoachInd
@MotorCoachInd Ай бұрын
Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff between the luggage space and the vestibule area. There is some below floor luggage capacity, but it is only accessible from the roadside. As you already pointed out, this is not ideal for some applications of the D45 CRT LE.
@duvac12
@duvac12 Ай бұрын
Great video James! After driving the D45CRT variant for Indian Trails in actual service (we needed the center lift but spec’d it like a D4520 otherwise) I can say the design is decent. We did have some issues with exterior lights almost immediately burning out. The mirrors are like those found on a transit bus and took some getting used to. There are a few significant blind spots and less overhead luggage space than before. The fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired. The 4 coaches we received have the swing door rather than the bi-part door. It’s very hard to get it adjusted and it’s an electric design so if you don’t have power for some reason you can’t open the door from the outside. So while it looks like a Van Hool door it’s an entirely different design from other coaches. Just some observations after working with them. Feels a lot like a J that shrank a little in the wash. 😂 Apparently MCI has changed things and now you can get a D4520 with the midship lift. To be honest the D4520 Vs. D45CRT designations seem to be pretty interchangeable. The rep who came to train us on the new coaches said lift position was the big difference. The next set of D’s we get will be D4520’s in all likelyhood but they’ll be the same specs as these CRT’s.

Isn't there a switch to disengage the door motor if power cuts out?
@duvac12
@duvac12 Ай бұрын
@@adamdion7574 There is an emergency release on the wall next to the door on the inside of the bus. If you have dead batteries that won’t help. You also have to disengage it correctly or it’ll break the handle and the door won’t work until the handle gets replaced. We already had that happen once.

That D4520 is not a bad looking coach. The low entry vestibule version makes a lot of sense for commuter buses. Appears to be a lot more efficient for loading and unloading. Plus, any capacity lost would be ok due to the frequency of commuter services in big cities I would think. And being an introvert, those single seats opposite the low vestibule would be perfect for me - no seat mate! 🤣 And of course luggage storage underneath wouldn’t be an issue.

8:52 was a good bus. I even have pictures of it up in the air, no wheels touching the ground, and a few with it burred in snow when the engine blew a head gasket. It looks so tired there...Back when I drove it and its sisters, they all still had the new coach smell and drove so nice. One day Id like to buy one and restore it. But it will have to wait in line lol. Also, you missed a D model. The D4000N. (I wont mention the D4000H or the other electric prototype), but the N was a 96 wide D for the Holland tunnel lines that NJ Transit wanted. Until they said no, and went with NovaBus. I never drove those, but I was told it was a rocket. The power of the D4000, with the maneuverability of an MC9. One thing Im curious about. NJ Transit was really UPSET when they did the G style headlights on the D model, that MCI had to made the D4005 Classic, with square sealed headlights, just like an old D, with the new funky rear (thats now old). At some point I guess they took delivery of some of the G nose buses, but Im curious what model MCI will build for NJT. They are the largest fleet in the US, and its majority coach, and they are very picky. I dont want to say bad things about a mans work, but after designing the D series, and the Renaissance, its hard to top those. Man had his work cut out for him. I guess I got used to that space between the headlight and the base of the windshield. So thanks. Thanks a lot. I wanted a MC9 in my fleet, so now I have to find a 102D3 as well! After I drove transit I learned on a 45' foot Van Hool T945 rocketship with a Cummins M11+. When I later encountered the 102DL3 I didn't like it as much because they turned "like the Queen Mary" and the driver seat wasn't an air seat. Also in that early 2000's era there were a slew of modern-look coaches including the E & J, the Setra S417, etc, and your passengers would be envious along side them at a big event somewhere. But, they were solid busses and made lots of money for their operators while plenty of fly-by-nights bled themselves dry leasing newer equipment.

I am somewhat concerned it is a bit of a road block to access and egress of the rear of the bus and may be a congestion point for entry and exit from the bus. As such, it will increase stage length times due to slower passenger boarding and exiting the bus.

It's nice to see the D series isn't gone, but ever since I first saw the LE prototype, I always thought it was pretty awkward how the vestibule is both lower and secluded, separated from the rest of the bus. I'm confident that a lot of disabled people wouldn't feel comfortable being set "apart" from the rest of the crowd or charter group. Seems to me that the best offered option is still to have the rear exterior wheelchair lift along with the moveable seats in the back. At least people using these are still sitting along with everybody else. Still hope to see one in real life eventually, curious how it compares to the J series

New Jersey Transit was gonna order these but we canned the order, but before I explain why, I need to discuss the way NJT does things. When NJT orders buses they like to order buses in bulk, as shown by our 7 year contract with MCI for over 1,000 D4500CTs! Anyhow, because we always order in bulk, we always give a couple hundred to private contractors who run contracted routes in the state of NJ, these buses being operated by the contractor but owned by NJT. With these buses comes some rules from the DOT of NJ: 1. The bus must be used for contracted operations only 2. The buses can not leave the tri state area (NJ, NY, CT) With these rules, everything should be fine, right? Nope. After a few years, it was becoming apparent the contractors could simply not be able to keep these coaches because of financial issues and breaking the rules that I just mentioned. Before we got to that point, NJT ordered 172 D45CRTs, however, when we realized what was up with those contractor run D4500CTs, NJT forced the hand of the contractors to hand a lot of them back (It’s important to mention that NJT themselves operated most of the coaches on their own routes but the contractors operated a good lot of them). So when one contractor ended operations, DeCamp, NJT got the D4500CTs they operated returned to them, fulfilling part of the D45CRT order. When CoachUSA and Academy stated downsizing operations due to financial issues, NJT got a good bunch of the D4500CTs they ran returned back, which fulfilled the remaining part of the D45CRT order. Realizing that the order was no longer needed because of all the former private contractor coaches being returned, NJT indefinitely put the order on hold. NJT won’t replace the D4500CTs yet given how the oldest one is from 2016 and the youngest one is from 2023 (NJT actually got the last ever D4500CT built).

Mr Wang do MCI have the alternative to use either cummins or detriot engines?
@crabbymilton390
@crabbymilton390 Ай бұрын
Not anymore. CUMMINS is the sole engine in MCI products. The only way to get a DETROIT is if you buy a MERCEDES TOURRIDER. DAIMLER owns both so it’s a proprietary issue.

will their new bus have adaptive cruise control and lane departer warning like on our newer Freightliner Cascadia trucks at work?
@MotorCoachInd
@MotorCoachInd Ай бұрын
Yes, the new D-coach models have an option for Bendix Fusion - adaptive cruise/collision mitigation/lane departure warning. Fun fact - The J series coaches also have an option for Bendix Fusion. The MCI legacy D-coach models also had an option for adaptive cruise/collision mitigation, but it wasn't as capable.
