If you think about it, it was actually a genius business decision from Ubisoft. Gamers are too busy being well adjusted to complain about the pricing. Stellar Blade had a ton of yellow paint, but they were all too focused on the polygonal tiddies to notice. Diversion via outrage might be the new meta

@@CaptainAstronautI do agree with pretty much all of it except the dei stuff but there was a massive outrage of game journos over eve,s body even though they themselves write articles like praising BG3 penis physics and ign france even said it would kill irl women.Sony also has censored some anime games while having you know abby and that bear scene.How are they wrong about that. Also I don,t think its a problem if yasuke is romanticised instead of historically accurate.Bit that wiki thing was also by both sides and the fact him being retainer on wiki page has been tried to change like 70times and it was most probably the left side which tried that thing,cause he page already said he was a retainer.

@@bnuuycomrade5089 Yeah, he was a real person, and while he was not a "Samurai" (the hereditary warrior/noble class) he was one of Nobunaga's retainers and a warrior, so it's appropriate to call him a "samurai" considering all the other historic samurai who are referred to as such without meeting the other definition. Walks like a duck, and all that.

@@user-xsn5ozskwg Well if you follow the tracks of references all the way to a real primary source you'll find they all come from the same dude whose whole argument is all but "I made it the fuck up" and he only has the one mention of yasuke's name and race off one footnote or some-such. It's even more blatant the guy is grifting hard for the progs because he is REALLY keen on changing up his tune when talking to the japanese and isn't half as assertive regarding the factuality of his statement. @@chukyuniqul "The progs". Yeah, dude, wokeness was totally infesting... uh... 16th-century Portugal, where Luis Frois, one of the people who has a *written first-hand account* of Yasuke, comes from. Lorenzo Mesia is another European who distinctly described Nobunaga as having a black retainer, since paintings from the era by Japanese people just don't mean anything to you, for some reason. I don't know who this Upper Echelon guy is but he clearly didn't do his research, and it seems like neither did you.

I'd advise you go watch the guy's video because he is more clear and concise than I could ever be for reasons I find to be obvious. But, if you wanna do that thing progs do where you make up a narrative in your mind based on misrepresented facts and statement and then you run with it like it's reality feel free to do so, but it'd be a crying shame.

I honestly didn't care until the weird revisionism on his Wikipedia page. I did a report on Yasuke back in grade school. If I remember correctly, he was sort of a Samurai. Since he was so big and scary, Nobunaga had him as a retainer and personal bodyguard. Still a samurai, but more in a bodyguard role. His fate is undocumented after the death of Nobunaga, so if they want to be true to him, I hope the game takes place after Nobunaga's death, because that would be the most interesting spot.

Could feature Nobunaga's death as a reason for why he shacks up with the Assassins. He isn't really shown to do much body-guarding in the trailers, and he doesn't really seem like the type to work with Naoe unless he has to, *and* and him becoming a sorta-assassin could give an explanation as to why he disappears from the historical records after Nobunaga's death. It would make for an interesting inciting event, or a mid-story complication he has to deal with. I am honestly just really siked that we are getting an actual historical figure as the protagonist of this game cause every protagonist up to this point has been fictional. Really excited for what the writers have in store for the Sengoku period!

This whole controversy is so hilarious. I knew Gamers were dumb but their arguments for why Yasuke shouldn't be the main character is peak idiocy. And as someone who has been following this whole controversy I can confirm I've seen like 99% of the arguments seen in this video... Atleast twice or more per argument. Also there was a guy who claimed to be Japanese and tried to edit Wikipedia and say how Yasuke was not a samurai or some BS. He was proven to be using Google translate english to Japanese 😂

Even putting aside the various story elements and cultural history that make Yasuke so important, making him very visually distinct from the background characters of the game is very practical from a design standpoint. Isn't that why so many Pokémon trainers have hats and games like Fire Emblem tend to give protagonists dark blue hair when most other characters don't have it? For a stylistically realistic game such as AC, a black character in a predominantly non-black country is just genius visual clarity.

Also, they wanted a contrasting character to the native Japanese shinobi protagonist. Naoe knows all about Japan, so there wouldn't be much of an excuse to have explanatory dialogue about the setting. But with Yasuke as a secondary protagonist who is not native to Japan, they do have a reason to have things be explained to him. It works very well narratively.

@@Silverizael greatest admiral from history Zheng He and his ships/naval power. It doesn’t need to be him since he is a legendary historical figure. One of his crews, on the warrior side could easily be made a secret Assassin a la Yasuke for Japan. Here Ubisoft could do that easily for the next AC Africa since they proved they are okay with that like Yasuke main playable for AC Japan.

this drama is dumb as a black guy being a samurai is obviously more believable than dragons are real. but probably, as they haven't abandoned historical accuracy entirely just added magic stuff and the myths are true + combining historical events. it is more fantasy Italy with magic rather than an alternate history where the Egyptians conquered Europe which would be abandoned history rather than based on true events type of thing we get.

This why I see Yasuke as an interesting choice because he’s one of those characters in history where he’s know just enough to have a small footnote in history but you can greatly interpret and theorize about what happened to them. Yasuke as a person who did exist has a very open history and isn’t railroaded like other figures. Examples like Oda, or Emperor Meiji.

Well, from an Asian male perspective, there's never been an Asian male in Assassin's Creed. Yasuke's story is interesting, (One of the only foreign-born samurai, and the only african samurai), but it feels really convenient that they added Yasuke as a the first black historical figure protagonist, when the alternative would have been finally having a playable Asian man. Plus, from a historical perspective, the protagonist's are kinda easy and boring. Really, all I can lament about is that they took the easiest options they could in a Sengoku Jidai setting. They could have had a Chinese pirate who gets swept up into the war, or a commoner who declares themself a samurai, or put a different spin on the Yasuke story. But Ninja Girl and Samurai Boy is easy and simple. Whatever, I don't even play AC.

As an Asian man, I also think a Black Samurai would be really cool protagonist to play as. Regardless of historic accuracy of whether Yasuke was indeed a samurai or not, he existed in Japan. Btw, I really like Samurai Jack, who is voiced by a Black voice actor. His accent for Jack was humble, wise and cool. A Black Samurai game would be unique and stand out a lot, like Miles Morales Spiderman

Yasuke was in Nioh 1 and no one batted an eye. I guess people got weird about it since he is playable in this game? It's historically accurate, so I don't see the problem. The female protagonist of AC Odyssey has more historical inconsistencies than this game currently has.

The only complaint I've seen from the Japanese is that there's a lot of famous samurai that could have been represented here and that could have gave the west some appreciation of their history. But like....that's it, and they're not even heated about it. It's not as if japanese games featuring historical samurai have never made it to the west anyway. There's plenty. I doubt those were actual Japanese people. There are so many famous samurai, it's inevitable that most of them would get the short end of the stick. Also there's a whole bunch of japan-exclusive games all about all the different samurai, which really makes me question the disappointment about one game not featuring them as playable characters (they could still appear in the game!)

DYNOMITE. Did you know this entire narrative of Yasuke being a “samurai” was greatly exaggerated and made up by a UK white man that also teaches English in Nihon University in Japan. And apparently was the one that edited the Wikipedia page of Yasuke under the alias “tom tottori” since 2012 to coincide the release of his book. And as a result misinformed a lot of people for over a decade until recently The Author removed his Facebook page and went into hiding, due to the Japanese and many others calling a him a scammer and a fraudulent author for damaging the Japanese’s history. History built on lies and misinformation. You hate to see it. That being said it’s probably going to be mid anyway since it’s Ubisoft, because this gaming company is what I go to for quality, originality and totally no predatory pricing.

@@user-xsn5ozskwg Even though there’s nothing wrong as a concept (See Afro Samurai) since with the advent of fiction you don’t need to worry about how you write certain characters as long as there you know characters and you don’t take it seriously, but the way Ubisoft is marketing the game leaves me beyond skeptical that they’re only doing this to distract people from the horrible pricing and the potential mediocrity that this game will bring. And they call themselves Quadruple A, that’s just bad comedy.

I mean... it's an ubisoft game, I guess even ubi at this point assumed everyone will know it will be a big map filled with copy-pasted "activities", including enemy camps and towers revealing more icons on the map, with some kind of 3rd person action combat (since it's ac) and some left over stealth-lite mechanic and very grindy rpg elements so that you'll buy exp boosters to speed up the needless, mind-numbing grind

Well, the main question about any kind of representation in media (imo) is... why not? I don't think there will ever be an argument against it. The only times I can remember where representation has a slightly bitter taste is with recent disney movies, but that's just because disney made pretty clear that they don't actually care about representation (like editing out a already uncharacterized lesbian couple in the newer star wars movies for the release in some countries), but they rather use it as a marketing strategy. I personally condemn that, BUT that doesn't change that the representation can make people feel seen. I don't like that the company is doing good for the wrong reasons, but at the end of the day they are still doing good.

Why are they even freaking out? Yasuke was a genuinely really interesting historical figure. Yes, most samurai were Japanese, but there very much were black and white samurai, just as there were black Vikings.

Me hearing Ubisoft finally making a Japan based Assassin's Creed: "Hmmm, the Assassin/Templar schtick was always hamfisted, but I'm kinda fatigued. After how much I enjoyed "Ghost of Tsushima", I'm curious as to how theyre gonna tell this story now that they opted to make the historical figure the main character. Im sure others share my concern that they're gonna botch what would probably be the first historically focused depiction of a beloved figure that inspired so many different cultural mainstays!" Meanwhile, twitter is just 4chan now, I guess. Like, yeah, I was expecting Racist losers to complain, but I wasnt expecting this losers to lose their mind THIS HARD. Its wild how quickly racists taint any and all legitamate concerns with about the quality of a piece of Media by just being racist. This could actually end up being a bad game, but everybody will rightfully think its likely to be just coming from a hating racists, and you cant blame people for reaching that conclusion. These incels are perisistent and notorious for review bombing. Im hoping this ends up far more interesting than any of the last assassins creed games. Have a lovely day everybody. (Hopefully these friggin incels get the help they need before they hurt someone. Its scary to see just how brazen and radical some of these freaks are getting)

My only concern was that the male character was actually yasuke which was a line I didn't think the games would cross. Yasuke is honestly one of the most badass people to ever live so I'm glad we get a character inspired by him. But yeah I think it's really cool. Also really funny that these guys just ignore the female main character cause of totally normal reasons.

Racists gonna racist, but yeah, Yasuke just wasn't a samurai. His story is fascinating if you wanna actually learn about him, but you're more likely to come across sensationalized speculation fantasy masquerading itself as actual history. You know, like most modern historical documentation. Anyway, happy hunting, and please do not spend more than 100 dollars on a fucking ubisoft game.

I got my PhD on the Japans by watching Shogun. I didn't see any black people in that show. Checkmate atheists! Genuinely amazing show that everyone should watch. One that I feel could have a whole anthology series of Elizabethan Era historical dramas set across Asia all produced by the same team with the same quality that people would universally love equally, but as soon as they do the Oda Nobunaga season if Yasuke is a pivotal figure, the mob WILL riot.

Idk myself I'd rather play as a silent or horribly bland protagonist with no strong characteristics at all. I mean everyone loves the mordern day ubisoft protagonists. Thats why assasins creed fans only talk about ezio or altier. Because the character writing of modern day ubisoft is so strong. Having a unique person of history to base their character off of is unnecessary.

Personally i dont like people complaining about historical inaccuracies with games purely because in most ways games that involve history do kinda exaggerate things. Assassins creed is realistic... to a point then gets whacky There are other reasons to dislike ubisoft that are far more important than this. Hence why jumping to conclusions and being reactionary is just unnecessary.

I remember the outrage that came from Odyssey letting you CHOOSE between the male or female protagonists, and people were raging at the sjw pandering for having you play as a GIRL for the first time... forgetting that Aveline already existed. I just wish ubisoft would make a main AC game where you just played as a woman, without the choosing gender or dual protagonists thing. Though Yasuke will probably be more fleshed out than Jacob was in syndicate
