If you thought the only Japanese beers were Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo, think again. In this episode of Al-Kee-Hol, host Yuka Uchida explores the booming business of craft beer in Tokyo. From passion fruit-infused lagers to unfiltered hand-pumped black ales to microbrews served in a refurbished shipping container, Yuka and her pal Ogi sample enough beer to earn the title of beer otaku (beer nerds)!

Hops and Marijuana are actually cousins/ relatively similar plants! It's funny how despite not having a psychoactive effect like bud, it still ended up being an integral part of the brewing process. Even Mother Nature knows you need to let loose every once in a while ;)

It is really hard to find the craft beer bars when visiting Japan. I was in Tokyo in March and I had quite a difficult time locating them even when showing locals a map. Though it is interesting to go there to try the craft beers emerging from Japanese breweries.

Why would you go to japan to drink american craft beers... aside from the fact that beer doesn't travel well, wouldn't you drink local shit for the experience?
@shmimc1
@shmimc1 10 жыл бұрын
It was interesting when they talked about the laws changing in 1994. You don't have to prove that you can brew a large amount anymore. Seems like this would allow for more craft breweries to open up Paul McGuire. I just love seeing the expansion and evolution of craft beer.

SuicidelG I hear you man. I would try to experience as much local craft beers as I could. The mass production shit, not so much. I can get that here if I really want a Japanese version of PBR. Lol! Cheers man.
@SDHopaddict

SuicidelG agreed completely. My takeaway from my trip was that it is better to enjoy local sake than to spend the time to find the local beers. Some of the breweries do have Tasting rooms but it is plenty local to enjoy good sake. www.sdhopaddict.com/2014/03/15/craft-beer-in-japan-my-adventures-and-failures/

Their description of Real Ale isn't entirely true. Real ale is conditioned in the cask (keg/barrel), so all the carbonation is naturally occurring because of the continued fermentation in the final barrel. There is fizz, but it's not the same as modern standards. It isn't flat. It's soft and somewhat similar to the carbonation you get with a pint of Guinness. (I've been drunkenly present when a two year old cask of barleywine was tapped, and believe me it was as explosive as a bottle of champagne and quite fizzy.) Modern beer drinkers are accustomed to beer made with forced carbonation from pressurized CO2 dissolving in solution, like how they make soda and pop, which started happening after American Prohibition, due to unavailability and a change in taste to the cloyingly sweet side. Britons retained their taste for real ale well into the 1970's, but American pop culture gained a strong foothold in the 1980's with MTV, and British teens wanted to drink the popular beers of their idols, so commercial pale lager eventually almost killed the Real Ale culture of Britain, partially because Prohibition fucked up American beer culture so badly and American pop culture became so prevalent during that time.

affordable to really anyone who is willing, 3-5 grand per person can seem steep but come on. going to anywhere in the world is well worth the price. if you go to tourist traps it can seem bland, but if you can find a local to show you around it will be one of the best exp of your life. if you want a great affordable trip to asia that still has a sense of America/Europe i would say taiwan. If you are able to ride any form of two wheel transport i can get you a great recommendation for someone in taiwan

cool video, im glad that a lot of people are going with local craft beers now but its usually a process- they'll move from established brands to "craft beers" which are still sometimes produced under the huge manufacturers, and then state brewerys, there is a crazy seasonal that comes out of missouri that is brewed with espresso and it is the only beer ive had that actually nails the flavor, a lot of times they'll be brewed with something but still taste like a regular stout but this really fuckin blew my mind.

Good beer comes from all around the world and I think it is cool to see a variety of Japanese beer starting to make an appearance in supermarkets where I live, The Netherlands. I would be very interested to try more beer from Japan though, they seem to have some very nice stuff. This video makes me curious, that's for sure. My personal preference are Belgian beers, I can't quite figure out why other than that the taste often suits me. Anyway, the Japanese word for beer was derived from the Dutch word for beer, bier.

@jziskind
@jziskind 10 жыл бұрын
American, Belgian, English, and German beers are all better than Czech beer, just to name four. 99% of Czech beer is the same style of pilsener, which has little to no taste. You may drink more beer than any other country but the beer you produce is pretty bad.
@L4BT3C
@L4BT3C 10 жыл бұрын
J.A.Z. Nope, just no. American is hoooooorrrribleeee. Belgian - fair enough, English - no, too strong with awful taste, German and Czech beer is quite similiar. Maybe you know very little about czech beer, there is plenty of it. If you tasted only those like Pilsner, Gambrinus etc... then you have tasted nothing from our breweries.
@jziskind
@jziskind 10 жыл бұрын
L4BT3C If you think American beer is all Miller, Coors, and Budweiser then you've been in a coma for a very long time. Since the fall of communism, the Czech brewing world has been characterized by brewery closures and foreign takeovers. Very few breweries in the Czech Republic have kept the country's brewing traditions. Instead, it's been a quick race to the bottom with insipid, flavorless lagers. It's not 1988 anymore my friend.

Lucky hosts! If I were at that first half-finished microbrewery, I'd be off-my-ass drunk in no time and tangled up in the bare woodwork. Those mugs of craft beer - or _jibiru_, if you will - looked so delicious... Then the second one had so many draft choices...just heavenly. Major beer geek props to the Uchi Tora guy who wished he could guzzle a gallon of Session IPA. My sentiments exactly! I fully support the _gaijin_ behind the bar at Brimmer Beer Box and the idea of parachuting craft pubs made from shipping containers into locales starved for good beer. (Target the Middle East first; a few cold, delicious lagers ought to take 'jihad' off the minds of the rage-heads out there.) And the Japanese man who looks a little like ECW wrestler Yoshihiro Tajiri explaining good beer has officially edged out Tajiri, Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, and George "Sulu" Takei as my favorite Japanese guy of all time. Damn, that show makes me thirsty for - you guessed it - BEER.
