10:42 I love that term "positionless football" to describe the 49ers offense. Part of what makes their system so effective is that massive versatility of their skill players like Juszczyk. In their typical 21-personnel package of Juszczyk, Kittle, Aiyuk, Deebo, and now CMC, they combine 2 elite rushers, 4 elite receivers, and 4 elite blockers into the one group, and all 5 of them can at least be some level of threat in all three roles. They can run virtually any play, to anywhere, out of any arrangement of those players.

Mike Alstott was one of the players I loved watching most in the early 2000s. To see this position being re-embraced is very welcome.

I always figured as defenses went all in on speed and lightweight setups to counter the spread offense, eventually somebody would counter that with brawn and weight and eventually the fullback would be reborn.

Bill Walsh when asked about the most important aspect of his pass offense: "It's the fullback. The fullback is really the critical part of our passing game, because he's the one that's the most difficult to handle. So you'll see year in, and year out our fullback catch more passes out of anyone in our ball club." It's basally same thing that happened with tight ends. Bigger players are getting better at running routes and catching balls so are another option on the field from a much larger body; they are no longer just to block. Much like basketball where centers are able to hit 3's. Also, as linebackers start emphasizing speed too much, now the fullback is able to exploit the size differences now

Alec Ingold, fullback for the Dolphins and formerly the Raiders, is an absolute athletic freak. He went to my high school, and was the hardest working guy you'd ever meet. First one to practice and film, last one to leave. It didn't matter if you were a starter or a backup or a backup's backup, he was always pushing everyone in the weight room. Some real leadership shit. As a sophomore, he played running back and rushed for more than 1000 yards and 22 touchdowns. He moved to quarterback as a junior, and still was elite. He passed for 1427 yards and 13 scores, adding 860 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He added even more as a senior, and we outscored teams by an average of 40 points his senior year, mainly through Ingold. He went to Wisconsin, got moved to fullback, bulked up like 40 pounds, and not only excelled at running like in high school, but was a great blocker too. He went undrafted in 2019, yet made the Raiders roster by the season. This is his 5th season in the NFL, and I wouldn't be surprised if he continues to play in the league for a few more years, because I know how hard the dude works firsthand.

In a sense, the running game has come full circle. Back in the early days of football, there wasn’t an exact role for each “back.” Every back had to be able to run the ball, pass the ball, and block the defenders. The game had evolved towards specialization, but now is shifting back towards it, just this time it’s including tight ends and bigger receivers.

And then there's Andy Reid, who won't be using a fullback this year for the first time ever.

As a 225lb 6’0 full back/olb ran a 4.6 40 In high school i can personal tell you it’s really really fun taking mfs heads off on trap blocks and anything outside zone. We had a formation called “fat train” with two off set full backs one back and the qb in pistol. Always y’all knew wtf was coming when you saw the starting and back up full back jog on the field, still couldn’t stop basic concepts. Running trap from the back field also is probably one of the best things, and most fun for big fella who can move.

I’ll never forget my d end in front of me first play got “read” like a mf turned around to our sideline and screamed “ they’re running read” about 4 times before our dc said “I know Dylan” baffled another school could run advanced concepts. They ran it twice with no success. We ran naked read about 10 times that game as we did every game let alone half back lead read or trap read.

Glad I found this video. I remember back in the day scratching my head wondering WTF happened to all the fullbacks.

It's fun to see the FB be reinvented. On some level, I think that there's a chance that you end up with a truly versatile team where it's 5 OLs and 6 skill players. Basically, think about what would happen if you loaded up with 6 clones of Taysom Hill. Any one of them can line up at any position at any given time and be effective. That is a terrifying proposition.

The fullback is the lead blocker for your running back and an extra blocker in the passing game.

Great insights on the resurgence of this 'role'. I was aware of Skowronek's role with the Rams and how McVay will continue to ride out 11 personnel. But the point you made with the linebackers being smaller than they were years before on average (the off-ball ones excel in coverage roles) made all the more sense why the role can be more lenient in the modern game. And the brand of positionless football becomes even more potent more guys can be a threat to run and catch on offense.

Finally!! I'm a big fan of using a fullback. You really can open up the offense with a good fullback

I love that trap play from the Patriots. What a creative way to bring back an old concept in a fresh way. I wonder if the personnel pendulum swings back the other way in favor of bigger linebackers that put small fullbacks at a disadvantage.

Everything Old is New Again. Joe Gibbs in the 80's used "H-Backs," Tight Ends in the Fullback position doing both Fullback and Tight End duties, so he could use Joe Riggins, a Fullback who was also the Redskins' best ball carrier, as a massive Halfback. Mike Shanahan would use Tight Ends the same way to put an extra blocker in the backfield for RGIII during both pass and option plays, so it makes sense that other coaches in the Shanahan Coaching Tree such as Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay also use variations on the concept.

Gotta love how we've spent decades coming up with most wild formations possible to own up options and now they've started to realize the most flexible formation is the standard I.

Marcel Reece from the 08-16 Raiders is the perfect example of versatility. Played wideout at Washington, when he came to Oakland, they converted him to FB but also used at RB, WR and TE, plus special teams. Matchup Nightmare.

Always love ur content. Top shelf. Noticed the Hawks play with that concept using Parkinson or Dissly lined up at FB. Worked well esp on play action sneaking one of the big boys into the flats. I agree with you, I think we’ll see a lot more of that in the coming years. Having backs, TEs and WRs play fullback will be the way to go since it gives the play caller more flexibility than having a designated FB (freak exceptions aside, of course). No doubt man, great stuff 👌

Used to run split backs when I was in junior high. We could run, block, or run routes in any direction, at any time. Coach would line us up in either spot to mess with people. Fullback is such a fun position to play. Crack skulls, tote the rock, and catch passes.

Been calling for this for years. Always seemed the obvious choice on how to evolve play again, after the patriots brought in tight ends as the go to weapons on pass plays. Fullbacks should be an essential part of the game as blockers pass receivers from the back field and running plays.

Also, this explains so well why I just play old school runs on Madden 2006 (love me William Henderson) Also Also, I LOVE that you're highlighting Fullbacks, but I don't just want blocking type Sam Gash style fullbacks, I want the return of Jim Taylor fullbacks as well! The Packers imo are kinda returning to that formula by having AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones, Dillon is 250lbs. like a blocking type fullback, and you got the speed back in Aaron Jones, yet both run the ball very well. I would love to see them both on the field at the same time because it brings a wrinkle to the offense that hasn't been seen since the 60's, by having 2 talented backs, it forces defenses to hesitate for a split second on where is the ball going? By the time they figure it out, either back could already have 5 yards gained. Hell I hope they bring back the ole' Split Back formation instead of I-Formation. And let's be fair here, Fullbacks don't have to be literally under that position, cuz technically speaking the FB position is dead, just like the Half Back position, they're all Running Backs, so by having Dillon, Jones, and an actual blocking type back (or in the Packers case Degiuara(?), an H-Type TE that fills in at blocking back) or just another backup back, it allows for quicker subs and can still share work loads.
