RIP Jimmy, Phyllis and Irv. Greatest pregame team ever.

My childhood was a nightmare. My father was a great man, but he died when I was 5. Idiots and morons took over raising me and my life was full of screaming and beatings. We didn't have cable TV, but we were lucky to have a TV I guess. For a few hours on Sunday starting with this song things were good. When I hear this song now it almost brings me to tears.

Wow…this was the best theme ever. Takes me back to Sunday afternoons after coming home from church and watching the game with my father. The best times.

This takes me back to my youth...makes me feel nostalgic and wistful for my dear old Dad who died just 6 months after Super Bowl XII was played in 1978. Hearing this theme makes me think of classic CBS and Archie Bunker...

My favorite NFL Theme. Bring back childhood memories.

This is best football theme of all time. Pregame shows and the games themselves. It is also the best pregame show of all time. Sure I feel sorry to what happened to a lot of the players but the era of the Steelers and Raiders was what football was all about. It was just a perfect game then. ESPN didn't exist. You didn't get that many games. The highlights were hard to find. Who didn't wait for halftime of Monday Night for Howard to show you what you missed.

We used to play this at football games for kickoffs in high school when in was in the marching band..

Why can't they leave a good music where it belongs. A legend

It's not just the music that brings back memories how great the NFL was during that era it was also the pregame show and the announcers.

I will never be able to listen to this again without thinking of Phyllis George. A pioneer, trailblazer. She paved the way for other women to follow. She didn't just open doors, she knocked down the wall. Women in sports owe her a huge debt. They had mentors where she had none. She did it without a map and did it well. RIP Phyllis George A big part of my childhood Sunday afternoons. Condolences to her family and friends.

After much searching, I finally found this theme. I love it! It has the kind of adrenalin rush that not a lot of TV sports themes have today. "Horizontal Hold"...and most any background music by the legendary Sam Spence....I'm in football highlight heaven!

This music was one of my relatively few pleasant memories of regular-season football Sundays in the late '70s, having grown up watching the Detroit Lions. (I usually didn't tune in on the weeks the Lions were blacked out at home, of which there were many.)

I remember this theme back in the day on CBS Channel 6 WTVR (Richmond, VA)

So Happy I witness the golden age of football of the 70s and shows like this. Monday Night Football was a much watch with Howard Cosell and team. The Monday Night Football Halftime Highlights was Awesome and before all of the ESPN shows etc. Grew up as a kid with the George Michael's Sports Machine too!!! Lets not forget College Football and Basketball was so thrilling.. It was an AWESOME time in Sports.

The 1978 intro was the best, even though it is the same music, I liked the clips they showed, The sound of the crowd cheering, The TV camera turning towards your TV screen and the CBS "eye" logo shutter opening, Ron Jaworski calling plays, clips of tackles being made with the noises players made being tackled and doing the tackling, Walter Payton leaping over the players for a goal line touchdown, Fran Tarkington throwing the football and the camera following it's flight, Ed Jones' sack on Craig Morton during SB XII (replacing the clip of Cliff Branch getting his feet taken out from under him during an reception... when real football was being played lol!!), the Cowboys player being stepped on, Willie Brown"s interception TD return during SB XI, flashes to the reel to reel tape, the engineer flipping the switch to turn on the studio lights, the announcers first and last names appearing on the screen in sync with the horns in the music, the engineer flipping the switch to turn on the studio lights and of course " The NFL today on CBS sports brought to you by Wang, Tuborg Gold Beer, etc" My eyes well with tears as I'm typing this, (damn I had a good childhood) This intro was on you tube up to two years ago and I would play it every Sunday at 1pm EDT during football season. I would show it to younger sports fans and proudly say, this is how football came on back in the day. I think they should bring this music back and put in clips of today's players. At least the show is still broadcast from Studio 43.

On Super Bowl Sunday, CBS aired a retrospective on The NFL Today called You Are Looking Live! Named for the phrase Brent Musberger used when the camera caught the eye of a stadium. That theme opened and closed the special which included stories of the show's beginning and some of the tumult about it involving the late Jimmy "The Greek." Of the original 5 studio hosts, Jayne Kennedy and Brent are still with us.

This song gets me hyper, especially at 0:39 to 0:42.

I Think They can revive "Horizontal Hold" for the NFL Today in 2021 as a Dance Remix similar to the 1981-1982 Version or the 1983-1988 Version and still use the Posthumus Zone for the NFL on CBS Game Coverage but DO NOT USE THE POSTHUMUS ZONE FOR THE NFL TODAY ON CBS PERMANENTLY, PERIOD!

Are the videos they used with this music anywhere to be found? I loved the crushing hits and highlights that accompanied this music.

I find the facial expressions of the late Phyllis George and the very much alive Brent Musburger in this photo fascinating. I think someone off-camera (obviously), like the stage mgr. or the cameraman (and it WAS a man in that era), has said something or has joked something off-color or sexist (or both). Musburger seems to be enjoying whatever is being said. Ms. George, on the other hand, via her facial expression, is definitely saying "Really? Really?" She's not masking her disdain.
