34:54 the reason some GBA games are weirdly bright is because they were designed with the original Gameboy Advance in mind, since the screen was dark and not very colorful. It's the same reason why all the Super Mario Advance games are weirdly bright and saturated.
@lakitudude75772 жыл бұрын
4 isn't saturated as much since the sp was out at that point

Some late GBC games could also check the console they were running on and add enhancements to the game. Usually it was changing the color pallete to a brighter one due to the GBA's screen.
@SuspiciousScout Жыл бұрын
That's actually really fascinating, I never knew that. It makes so much sense for the games looking so bright rather than being an artistic choice. It really is a shame the original model didn't have a backlit screen because I prefer that model's form factor way more than the SP's

I've always had this feeling that the DS belonged to 2006 rather than 2004. You just put everything I always thought into words. In 2004, the GBA was still getting a bunch of new games (by not only being popular, but also fairly new) and the DS's library wasn't that big. I feel like it was a "system in development". Other than that, the DS Lite (which is the version most of us associate with the console) only came out in 2007.

I will say, for someone who has designed a lot of catalogs similar to this layout - that Sponge Bob thing was probably a last minute addition before it went to print and they didn't have a screen grab so they took whatever they had. I'm guessing they picked that because it looked generic enough and could pass as a "cut scene". It's what I would have done honestly.

If memory serves, GBA Video is the reason I got a GBA SP (My first game system). We went on a lot of road trips, and my mom bought portable DVD players to give me something to do on the trip. After I think the third one fell of my lap and broke, she bought me a GBA SP and some video cartridges, since it was definitely more durable than the cheap DVD players. Sure, my selection was a lot more limited, but as a kid I was perfectly content watching Krusty Krab Pizza over and over again.

God, I used to, scratch that, still love catalogs and brochures. Even as a kid, I loved to keep the cardboard back from the action figures I would get to see what other toys were available and I loved when they had little character info on them. I would even cut out the little pictures of the Star Wars ships and just play with those. I remember one Christmas my parents made a stocking for the stuffed Pikachu that was basically my teddy bear (that I slept with until an embarassingly late age. I still have it in my closet) and they just filled it with all of the flyers and brochures and catalogs that the stores gave out while they were Christmas shopping. I was almost as excited for that stuff as I was for my actual gifts. The ads for the translucent color N64s blew my little mind. I really love seeing Scott gush about this stuff.
