The nitrogen cycle is a crucial process that converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants and other organisms can use. This process, known as nitrogen fixation, is primarily carried out by bacteria. Nitrogen is essential for life, forming a key component in amino acids, ATP, and DNA. The cycle also includes the return of nitrogen to the atmosphere through decomposition.
Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We offer quizzes, questions, instructional videos, and articles on a range of academic subjects, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, history, economics, finance, grammar, preschool learning, and more. It just blows my mind that our atmosphere is chock full of nitrogen and yet we are completely dependent upon tiny bacteria to access that nitrogen so we can have things like DNA, protein, etc. One of the coolest things prokaryotes can do for us!
