The Norfolk Southern Lawmen sing Rollin' Out Again

September 2011 will mark the return of steam to Norfolk Southern rails as Norfolk Southern Corporation and Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum launch a limited schedule of steam locomotive passenger excursions Labor Day weekend.
The excursion program, "21st Century Steam," will operate two trains each day Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3 and 4, powered by recently restored Southern Railway Locomotive 630. Launch of the excursion program coincides with TVRM's Railfest commemorating the museum's 50th anniversary.

To be fair, NS does allow ferry moves of steam engines like 765 and 611. They're not entirely abolishing steam on the mainline, just not as receptive to excursions as before. Also, you might want to take a look at CSX. Their stance on steam and preservation has softened in the past few years. It's amazing what time and change can do... it's like the pendulum of a clock, swinging back and forth all the time...

I'm glad steam trains all over the world from the USA to the Canada Australia, New Zealand, my home country of England in the UK and many non English speaking countries too are being restored to run on the mainline and on heritage railways too I take my hat off to all the enthusiasts who play their part in restoring these old iron beasts

Nice video! A fitting "theme song" for the program! Is the program only focused on the Southern portion of the NS System or will system-wide tours be a possibility? My family and I got to see the Lawman Band last year in Spencer, NC during the Heritage event. The band put on a great show in spite of the heat. If you haven't had a chance to see the band in person, I suggest seeing them. If you live or are going to be around Birmingham, Alabama this weekend ( March 2, 2013) the band will be in Attalla Alabama welcoming in the TVRM/Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Program at about 10:45 am or so.

Maybe so, but the actual steam team on the UP were certainly a nice bunch when I got to talk to them when 3985 visited St. Louis and Pacific MO recently. I was glad that they took the time to answer my questions and tell me a bit about being on the steam program, which they didn't have to do. I'd like to join up myself, but you have to have a minimum of 5 years working on the UP before applying, and moving to Cheyenne is beyond my budget at the moment.

Hopefully Norfolk Southern Will! I have a Family Member who works for Norfolk Southern in Huntingburg,IN Yard! His name is Jerry Fussler and he reported to me about the 1361 being added directly to the Steam Program! Hopefully also that PRR 2-10-0 Hippo #4483 also might get the opportunity to work also. As far as I know the 610 is still down For it’s 1472 day inspection it got delayed because of Covid but I think once it starts to settle down they will get right back on her!

Maybe when PRR K4 1361 gets fired up it'll be incorporated into the program too. Good to see at least one rail corp agknowledging their heritage! And yes, the 1361 will be fired up again. The museum has a plan to get her back in action, all they have to do is get it approved by the board.

@SurfTrip00 - I think the "lean towards Southern" is due to the partnership with TVRM. Two out of the three engines they're using in this program are of Southern heritage (630 and 4501). I believe if the program goes well, it's a possibility 611 could be brought out again in the future.

NS as a railfan I want to say thank you. As much as I love main line steam I would rather you do a couple of steam trips a year and keep the program going than do too much too quikcly. I understand you are a business, and that has to take priority. But take advantage of this and use it for PR and marketing purposes. Do what the Union Pacific does and entertain shippers and railroad customers. But I would like to say keep it up, remember your history as you move forward into the 21st century.

It's a bit of a ruse, this. NS is contracting out the TVRM locos and crews for occasional runs, just to wave the flag a bit for PR purposes. What they ought to do is get 611 and/or 1218 out of mothballs and run 'em again. Still, I suppose it's better than no steam program at all. UP is the only company to have maintained a steam program no matter what, and that's a pretty neat feat in itself. Good song, though, made me smile!

@generationll - You do realize that 630 and 4501 (two of the engines being utilized for the new NS Program) were part of the ORIGINAL Southern Steam Program in the 1960's, right? I think NS is trying to start out small with 630, 610 and 4501 and besides, the partnership with TVRM is a big plus - we might see 611 in the future - it's not out of the cards, my friend! :) For now, I think that these engines will provide tons of enjoyment for all who see them :)

NS Lawmen are a talented bunch. This video shows, with the return of the steam program the lean towards Southern heritage and to hell with the N&W. Why wouldnt they have brought back the 611 or 1218? Ive been with the company for over 20 years and in late 1991 or so (10 yrs post merger) a bulletin posted "We are no longer two separate entities. No SOU...no N&W. We are Norfolk Southern." If thats so then why are the F units in SOU colors and no N&W steam in play?
