Kratos and Freya visit the Norns in an attempt to get answers on events to come. The three wise women’s answers don’t satisfy the God of War and the Witch of the Woods, so it is up to themselves to break fate for the sake of the Realms.

This scene was the most surreal in the God of War series. The home of the Norns protected by a series of tough enemies, several mind screws, all to protect their gold threaded abode which is under the well of destiny and can only be accessed by a foreign species of magical horse. Then there are the Norns themselves, their appearance makes them look uncanny as their color palette, glowing eyes, horns, and facial structure give them a look of characters in a Masked Drama as they move in and out of their golden threaded abode Urd: The Crone who has seen it all and is done with our characters nonsense Verdandi: The Maiden who constantly announces the characters actions in real time as if it were in a script Skuld: The Child who prances while mocking the words of Kratos, Mimir, and Freya by quoting them a fraction of a second before they do Then there message to the 3 about fate in general. The way they think of it is nonsense. Its not a tangible thing that can be controlled even by them. It is just the predictable end result of their actions. Mimir: with his constant moral compromises that he did in the service of Odin which eventually led to his fate as an undead head Freya: her cursing Baldur with immortality despite the fact that it came with Extreme Sensory Deprivation as a price drove him mad and towards Odin for all the wrong reasons Kratos: The list is vast of his faults but his biggest is that his only solution to most of his problems usually revolves around killing things especially Gods who have stakes in many peoples lives and environments in which people thrive. The Norns do not mince words and tell shall they continue on this path they will end up in the future they want to avoid, and make our trio feel more powerless then any giant monster, or god ever has just by talking to them. Capping off the scene they stare at them in amused mockery as they give their parting words (3:00) Skuld(Kratos): "We are leaving" Verdandi: "He stomps away, followed closely by Freya." Urd: *"I enjoyed your story Kratos! Pity it has to end so soon."*

Looking back on this scene and reasoning through it, the implications there are insane. The norns had kratos horriblby wrong. He didn't wish to know his fate. Even the *first* sentence he said, he meant: "I seek my son". This can be further supported by him "missing the point" and only caring for heimdall. This shows how far kratos has grown as a character, putting his son's safety over his own.

I know an ash tree, named Yggdrasil, a high tree, speckled with white clay; dewdrops fall from it upon the valleys; it stands, forever green, above Urth's well. Three wise women live there, by that well under that tree. Urth is named one, another is Verthandi, the third is named Skuld. They carve men's fates, they determine destiny's laws, they choose the lifespan of every human child, and how each life will end. (Stanza 19 - 20, Voluspa, Poetic Edda)

When Kratos hears that his “Story is coming to an end” you can see the anger and disbelief in his face as he walks away knowing that if he doesn’t alter his actions his death is imminent. As they mock him as he leaves as a Gamer this was a sinking feeling knowing that this mighty figure could actually die. I was like no no no you have to break the cycle..

The moments where you play as Atreus did make me believe Kratos would in fact die and the Epilogue would have you playing as Atreus instead, à la Red Dead

I personally loved the designs and characterization of Urd ,Verdandi, and Skuld. Showing that they're vastly differently than the sisters of fate in Greece. They only watch over the fate of all, they don't control it as they said in the game.

After Ragnarök: Urđ: "Well, sisters, it looks like the Ghost of Sparta has finally become a better man! Took him long enough." Skuld: _"Loki will go. Atreus... Atreus remains."_ Verđandi: "Awww. Kratos and his son share a warm final embrace." Urđ: "Of course we always knew he could do it. Change his ways, become a hero. He started on this path a long time ago." Verđandi: "The boy, now a man, looks at his father for the last time. Atreus exits stage left." Urđ: "And, oh, what did Kratos just see on that triptic?" Skuld: _"A path."_ Verđandi: "Kratos, Freya and Mimir's head gaze upon the frozen Midgard. The End."

Skuld is my favorite female character in this game. She is sweet. She makes fun of Kratos and Freya and she reminds me myself a lot and I love female characters who are like me. I love her.

@@Icy-be5vl And yet she goes through a redemption arc. Odin doesn't. And besides- she didn't kill Bauldr. Kratos did. She merely cast the spell which made him go mad. It's terrible that she didn't remove it, but that's why she was a villain for most of these games. It's called a tragic flaw. Odin says he didn't want to kill Thor, but he says this to his face while killing him out of anger and selfishness. Freya only ever wanted to protect Bauldr. Meanwhile, this Norn you apparently like doesn't have any traits of her own besides repeating what others say and giggling when they get annoyed. That's literally it.

Sisters of fate are better and more iconic but these guys were entertaining. With how they told their propehcies and introduced the protagonists

I felt like the Norns were much more than interesting because they never claimed to have been controllers of fate or destiny, they simply manage to predict man’s choices before he chooses. They deny the existence of fate interestingly. They’re very different from their Greek counterparts.
