Hel (Old Norse: [ˈhel]) is a female being in Norse mythology who is said to preside over an underworld realm of the same name, where she receives a portion of the dead. Hel is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century. In addition, she is mentioned in poems recorded in Heimskringla and Egils saga that date from the 9th and 10th centuries, respectively. An episode in the Latin work Gesta Danorum, written in the 12th century by Saxo Grammaticus, is generally considered to refer to Hel, and Hel may appear on various Migration Period bracteates.

Tom has a habit of coming out with ridiculous theories quite often. Slow worms do not live in the soil and do not appear when you dig the earth. They are very rare and live like other lizards, under rocks etc and bathe in the sun.
@ce.d8333
@ce.d8333 Жыл бұрын
@@richardcook2970 actually, you’re wrong. Slow worms do nest and burrow underground, especially during times of intense heat and during hibernation. They do not just hide under shelters or in compost heaps such as is often stated. Where there is no human interference to their habitat, they will burrow underground in groups and have been found to take nesting material with them. Here in the UK, they are probably our most common lizard related reptile and are not that rare at all.

Hello Thor & Tom and thanks for this very interesting video podcast. I´m amazed of the amount of cultural and mythological amnesia the Christian religion heritage has led to. Even simple ancient astronomic, cosmologic, and cosmogonic facts and descriptions have been suppressed into oblivious in our cultural minds. Once upon a time, our ancestors had a very precise cosmogonical and cosmological description of their entire world perception and of “all things connected”, inclusive the life and death cycle of humans. No matter how “childish” the Norse Ask Yggdrasil is depicted, it contains a factual scientific description of the Earth, (Midgaard) and the realms above and under the Earth, Asgaard, representing the day- and nighttime celestial scenarios, and Utgaard, representing the Milky Way and its contours which participates specifically in the very similar cultural Stories of Creation. This Ask Yggdrasil tree is the physical observable “Tree of Life” in the biblical term, and it is rooted according to the Earth´s rotational axis with its top on the northern hemisphere and its roots on the southern “underworld” hemisphere, having a variety of starry constellation images connected to this tree. Again, in the biblical term, we also have the Tree of Knowledge which only can be observed physically on the southern, for us “underworld hemisphere” - or visited spiritually by meditation or in personal vision quests. This Tree of Knowledge-realm is mythically symbolized, depicted, and made as a Mound with a chamber on tribal locations, but its cosmogonical and mythical meaning is connected to the Milky Way and its whirling/spiraling (snake-like) center, in where this tree is located in the Sagittarius Constellation. This center is also mythically called the “Cosmic Womb”, connected to the great cosmic Mother Goddess, who represent the southern hemisphere Milky Way contours, and to the cyclical telling of life and death. BTW: The entire Milky Way band around the Earth constitutes the Midgaard Serpent Jörmungandr, encircling the entire Midgaard/Earth, observable on the night Sky on the darker seasons, and the mythical ship is also connected to the Milky Way contours on both hemispheres with each it´s ships. More BTW: The so called ancient Sun-Wheel symbol is really a Polar Wheel. OK, I have lots of information and illustrations here: Google: native-science (dot) net as KZfaq hates linking, even the most relevant ones. I can be personally contacted from this site too. Regards Ivor Nelsson

Tuonela is what we call the place of the dead in finnish mythology/folklore(Kalevala) and you get there by boat as well but it is steered by a specific person i assume its some type of " grim reaper" aiding you on the journey to the realm of the dead. Apparently shamans were able to get to Tuonela to learn new spells and gain some very important knowledge.

Yule season, yes! But Yule starts on the full moon of Jan 6th this year and goes for 3 days. I hope you know this. It seems most practicing Heathens have no idea when Yule is, and somehow believe the Solstice or Christmas is/was Yule. Yule was never in December. That is a Christian thing only when they stole our holiday as an effort to convert the "pagans." Yule is always in Jan or Feb depending on the full moon after the new moon after the Solstice, per the source material and historical records. Spread the word to our fellow Heathens and Pagans! We need to end the Abrahamic influence that has poisoned our ancestors and People and Tribes for thousands of years.

In Katha Upanishad a young boy around 10 is sent to the god of death who, through certain means, basically forces the god of death to teach him the true nature of reality (Brahman). When I read it I can't help but remember reading somewhere about children in Germanic and Celtic traditions going to a burial mound to obtain some kind of knowledge. I wonder if these share a similar root

Very interesting. That actually makes a lot of sense of Valhol/Valhalla. Previously I have always read or seen that Valhol does not appear until relatively late in Norse belief, even not being mentioned in the older poems in the Poetic Eda, and previously everyone went to Hel. So that seemed kind of weird that at some point they just invented this completely different place in Asgard where warriors go. How do you suddenly tag something like that onto a pre-existing cosmology? Whereas if Hel is made of “Hols”/Halls, and this is just another Hall, but it’s one where warriors go to fight and feast until they fight for Odin when Ragnarok comes, then that seems very easy to slot into the pre-existing cosmology. Which surely is how beliefs have to evolve - organically, not jarringly. Top marks.

(( I can only imagine all the treasures the nazi America Russia and other rich people have hidden.. theirs is incredibly little on the germanic treasures and art.. and history always tried to call them barbarians but we know by viking & Celtic jewelry they had much influence from phonecians Egyptians and Etruscans

if it´s anything like in uralics the rivers should match the main rivers of the tribal areas (they´re like otherworld mirrors through which the souls travel, and shamans too, looking for those souls). trees can of course be seen in the exact same way (and they were, just that it was probably a different tree for each tribe, or even person, who wants to go to another man´s tree). it´s important to make that connection to reality i think, otherwise it´s just religious theory. also in uralics snakes usually connected to the earth mother (her main helpers (hel help?), so it would be logical that they might have demonized some of that tradition (she is never the same as death spirits though, she rules the green parts of the earth, the living parts). also we have the same belief that it gets worse the deeper it goes (the first level is actually completely good, it´s where the ancestors live, or in other accounts earth spirits or first people turned into spirits). of course only one of our souls is believed to go to the ground (or down the river, or to the moon, so much local variety) because we have many you know (not poor people).

LOL! Two of them already have, and downvoted this. Probably the woke universalists who believe our gods can be anyone's gods. And we know who to thank for that. The Abrahamic poisons that invaded our lands have indoctrinated the majority to believe that any god can be the god of any person. Multiculturalism, diversity, and all that jazz. Sadly, it was this christian story created to enslave people by inventing a book that basically sounds too good to be true (and is difficult for many to debunk), and they wrote this book about a perfect person so that all new converts bow to the Gews. Go figure!

@@HroduuulfSonOfHrodger the guest speaker, the info was there but the delivery was fast, rather rambling and hard to follow, Norse mythology can be complex for beginners as it is, but when delivered rapid fire I think it can be off putting to people who are new to the path. It's difficult to find people level headed with historical information since the northern European culture was so methodically buried by Christianity. My opinion of course.

STJ is a white nationalist and he doesn't even try hiding his ridiculously obvious dogwhistles, not to mention his winged othala rune tattoo. NMAB has been more subtle, but pandering to the same crowd for awhile now. It's obvious if you read the comments section of their followers when anything race, women, or lgbt related is the video topic. They cater to insecure white dudes who want to link themselves to a mythical past to feel superior instead of feeling miserable about their lot in life; the result is white nationalism/fascism and scapegoating everyone they see as different from them.
